Post Setting a underground Shelter
An underground shelter is ideal when you need to live in an area and not be found. Properly camouflaged, and built in an area where few will ever go, you can live in your shelter indefinitely and never be found. (1)

How to make a shelter.

Dig a hole. In many areas this might be difficult due to rock being near the surface so you’ll have to find a spot where you can dig. For a basic shelter your hole should be about 4 feet deep, 8 feet long and 6 feet wide. This is a pretty small shelter but it can be enlarged over time.

Once the hole is dug place some beams over the hole, spaced a couple of feet apart. 2x3 inch pine is enough. Over these beams place any sheet material such as corrugated iron, plywood, or indeed anything you can find that won’t rot or become water logged. Over your chosen sheet material place a sheet of plastic to keep water out of your apartment and over the plastic place three to four inches of dirt.

You won’t be able to walk on the roof and neither will anyone else, as the roof is not strong enough to support the weight of a person. But to make a strong roof that won’t flex even slightly and give your presence away would take a major engineering project. For this reason you make the roof as described, but place your underground shelter in a position where nobody will ever walk on the roof. Have a look around and judge where no one would walk even if they did enter the area eg., among blackberry bushes, under a pile of junk, in a spot that has a much easier path around it etc..

Once the dirt is placed on the roof place as much of the foliage you removed when digging the hole back on the roof..

You now need to make a trap door so you can enter and exit. A good idea is to make the trapdoor out of clear plastic sheet. This will allow light into your shelter. The trapdoor can also be opened for air circulation. At the other end of your shelter put an air vent. Ships chandlers make plastic ones and these only cost a few dollars.

It’s now time to improve the inside of your shelter. Flatten out the dirt on the floor. Put down a layer of plastic sheet and on top of that put anything you have eg., a layer of carpet, planks, cardboard, lino, tar paper etc, just use whatever you can find. Line the walls also with plastic sheet and over this place cardboard, or thin plywood. Paint the entire interior white. This will reflect light and make your shelter much more cheerful

Now move in your furniture. A bed, table, chair, food locker, a bookshelf etc. Put an electric light in the ceiling that runs off 12 volts so that whenever you have power you will have light. Power can be had from a small solar cell and 12 volt battery. It is also good to buy an air extractor for air circulation that will switch itself on for a few minutes every hour to assist your passive ventilation system.

Over time enlarge your shelter. Add an extra room, dig it deeper so that you get headroom, make a shower and toilet compartment etc.

Are there any special problems?

Take care where you choose your site. Where will rain water go? How much breeze will there be to force air into your ventilators. However, in practice rain isn’t much of a problem. Even in heavy downpours rain rarely gets into an underground shelter. But think about this anyway.

Where are you going to put the dirt you dug out of the hole? In many places this isn’t a problem, you just spread it out. In other areas you’ll have to think about this more carefully.

Smell can be a major problem in underground shelters. It comes from the soil itself as well as poor ventilation. Make sure you line your hole with plastic and tape the joints so you don’t ever see or smell soil.

When properly built an underground shelter can’t be seen, even by those standing next to it. They can be built almost anywhere for this reason. However what can give you away is coming and going. If you only come and go at night you won’t be seen.

Bury all valuable items under the floor, or better still in some location nearby. Make an opaque screen for your plastic trapdoor so that light can’t get out at night time.

Stock your shelter well, so that you don’t have to go anywhere in times of particular danger.

Pay special attention to entertainment and activities for your mind. Stock plenty of books, CDs, consider having a small television, and have enough wattage in your solar cell to power the things you’ll need. A 40 watt panel should just about do. Set up a space, even in the smallest shelter, that you call your kitchen. It might be nothing more than a corner where you have your stove and food cupboard, but a small, well-ordered kitchen is good for the morale.

Special dangers. Don’t put your shelter where any motor vehicle, tractor etc could possibly be driven. Make sure that there is always some sort of barrier such as a tree or other object that will prevent this from occurring. There is nothing worse than a tractor being driven on the roof of your shelter with you inside. If an enemy military force suspect that there might be such shelters in the area they will drive all over it in tanks to destroy the shelters and their occupants. This was a common practice used by US forces in the Vietnam war. But it was easy to do there as so much of the country was flat and open.
Bush fires. Bush fires will just pass overhead without harming you, but the air will be filled with smoke. On average a person breaths 1 cubic foot of air per minute. In bush fire prone areas make sure your shelter is at least 300 cubic feet in size so that once sealed you have at least 3 or so hours of breathable air. Also position your shelter where boughs from large trees etc can’t come down on your roof during the fire.

Tips: A 20 litre water container set up with plastic tubing and a tap can be set up so that you have running water. You can buy all this gear from yachting supply stores. They sell sinks, water pumps, taps etc. Your little kitchen can be made quite pleasant.

If you can manage to get 240 volts you can live in luxury. Get a bathroom extractor and this can run continually or you can have a switch that will switch it off and on. A cheap ventilator will last about 2 years on a 20% on cycle, or only about 3 months if run continually.

You will gradually expand your compartment. Aim for full headroom (7 feet deep), say three rooms for living plus a storeroom and a toilet and shower space.

Defending your shelter. (1)

Quote:
The following will apply only when our country has been invaded by a foreign force and our government calls upon us all to resist.

You of course, never actually defend your shelter from your shelter. As soon as you do this you are a target. Instead you defend the general area from busybodies, do-gooders and generally the authorities who don’t want you to live there. You do this by giving the general area a reputation so that nobody goes there who knows what’s good for them. Eg., a bullet that somehow goes through a windscreen, well away from your retreat, but still in the general area, will give the place a reputation. If this sort of thing happens every few months or so the authorities will consider the place out of bounds. Never make direct threats of course.

In an area North of Auckland dope growers used these methods for years to keep the authorities out of the area and it worked just fine. The authorities even had to take out radio advertisements eventually to let growers know that a helicopter seen in the area is not looking for illegal plants, but is on a land survey, and asked them not to shoot at it. I don’t know if they complied or not. But the general idea is to give the general area a nasty reputation.

Do the police stay away from such areas? Yes, they do. It’s up to you to let them know which areas are out of bounds. But be warned. This is not easy. It has to be engaged in with a great deal of thought. Make one slip and you could finish up behind bars. It takes planning, cunning and minute attention to detail. You do not want the authorities suspecting that it is you, even if they only know ‘you’ as a person possibly living in the area, ie. instead, you cause an incident to occur when bikies are camped in the area. Who gets the blame? You cause another incident (changed MO) five miles in the other direction etc. The only message you want to convey is that the whole area is dangerous, don’t go snooping up around Mt Bloggs.

Why can’t the authorities just send in soldiers or police squads in large numbers? Because incidents occur so far apart. Months go by when nothing happens. The authorities know that they will find nothing and get bitten by mosquitos for their trouble. This is why the correct spacing of incidents is so important.

These techniques are nothing new, they have been used extensively by moonshiners, dope growers etc the world over. But the rule is ‘think.’ It takes a intelligence, planning and attention to detail
