Tony Johnston's challenge for Daniel Viles this week was not to understand the cockroach, not to find its redeeming features, but to find out "how hard can it be" to kill them with things found around the house. Daniel's major scientific breakthrough was the discovery that the alternative to buying chemical-based cockroach baits and traps is to fill them with gas and make their stomachs explode. "I'm expecting this piece of knowledge to be extensively tested by Brisbane's scientific community," said Daniel, "particularly those scientists aged about 10." How to make cockroach baits What you need:: - baking soda - sugar - flour - bacon grease - minced onions Put the five ingredients into a bowl and mix. As you stir, the mixture should form small round clumps. Simply put these clumps into cockroach-infested areas. Remove them once they've done their job. Cockroaches' stomachs contain a very high acid content. The combination of their natural stomach acid and the baking soda builds up gas. Cockroaches don't know how to burp, so their stomachs explode and they die. Tips: If this method of killing cockroaches makes you a little queasy, many neighbourhoods contain small, robust objects commonly known as boys, many of whom love this sort of stuff. Use them wisely. Other methods of dealing with cockroaches - obtain a gecko: geckos love cockroaches for their bodies, not their brains - mix baking soda and sugar: a little messier than the above recipe but still effective - mix baking soda and mashed potato to really get their gases going - use bay leaves and/or cucumber peelings in your cupboards as a repellent but most importantly... - keep your kitchen and house clean and free of food scraps and water sources. |
