Here's The Cool Technology That Keeps Curiosity Roving Through The Day

NASA's Curiosity rover is being powered by a rod of a Plutonium 238 isotope. This is different than previous Mars rovers, which were powered by solar panels.

The technology, called a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, is actually a relatively old innovation used as far back as the Apollo missions.

It works by converting heat generated off the rod's radioactive decay into energy.

NASA Caught Curiosity In The Act Of Landing In This Image

Image

WOW. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was able to catch Curiosity in the act of landing. In this image, taken from about 340 kilometers away, catches Curiosity while she was being parachuted down to the surface of Mars. It was taken about six minutes into the lander's "seven minutes of terror."

Wonder how took this image? :hmm

Yes Funny that! yet we all get fuzzy photos of the moon and fuzzy images of mars REAL STRANGE! note the fuzziness of the land behind it also note how CRISP the image of the rovers parachute and the rover is?

NOTHING SUS!
