Jaw-dropping time-lapse of the northern lights
Mar. 29, 2011 (9:30 am) By: Sal Cangeloso

If you haven’t seen it yet, above is a truly incredible time-lapse taken in Norway over the course of number of nights. In addition to the wonderful scenery, the video shows some amazing views of the northern lights (aurora borealis), which must not have been easy to get–the notes tell us that the shots were taken at the Kirkenes and the Pas National Park in -25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees F).

The time-lapse was done by Terje Sorgjerd, who lists his equipment as being the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24mm f/1.4, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8, and finally the Sigma 12-24mm. Based on some of the shots it’s clear that he used a dolly as well, and he linked over to Dynamic Perception, which is a pretty popular choice to add some motion to this sort of time-lapse (although who know they could hold up to these weather conditions?).

Sorgjerd even talked a bit about his process in the comment section of his video. He said he converted from RAW to 16-bit TIFF files in Adobe Lightroom, rendered those files to 4K resolution with a 95% JPG quality to get the correct resolution, and then edited those still images into a video in Final Cut. Finally the 4K video (that’s 4000 px of horizontal resolution) was exported as a 1080p video. It sounds like that was a lot easier than taking the shots out in the frozen woods at night.
