How to Produce More Food than You Can Eat in a Small Space

Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year.
ZetaTalk Warning 7/15/1995: Going into the cataclysms the weather will become unpredictable, with torrential rainstorms where not expected, and droughts likewise where not expected. Where today the world balances these situations, shipping produce around the world, during the years coming close to the time of the reappearance of Planet X, all parts of the world will experience extremes. Backyard gardens, tendered carefully by watchful eyes, will survive. But the large cash crops that supply crowded population centers will find little to market, and the prices will go up accordingly. At first, stores put up against such times will be tapped. After a bit, these stores will run down, and governments will get nervous. Helping handouts, from countries better off to those in desperation, will stop. Those groups who have prepared, and are relying on themselves and their own carefully tended gardens, will not find themselves pinched between starvation and hostilities. Fortunately, the easiest produce to grow is that most economical as foodstuffs. Humans have but to return to their recent past and relearn these lessons.

In 2013 we featured Urban Gardens, including the innovative and highly successful Growing Power example in Milwaukee. Inner city slums can become flourishing gardens, complete with fish tanks and even free ranging chickens. An Urban Farmer Is Rewarded for His Dream

Growing Power organization has six greenhouses and eight hoophouses for greens, herbs and vegetables; pens for goats, ducks and turkeys; a chicken coop and beehives; and a system for raising tilapia and perch. There's an advanced composting operation - a virtual worm farm - and a lab that is working on ways to turn food waste into fertilizer and methane gas for energy. With a staff of about three dozen full-time workers and 2,000 residents pitching in as volunteers, his operation raises about $500,000 worth of affordable produce, meat and fish. Using millions of pounds of food waste, the farm produces endless compost piles, which are then enriched by thousands of pounds of worms, essential to producing the highest quality fertilizer in the world.

There are community gardens if you prefer to bring the bounty of vegetables home and share with neighbors.
ZetaTalk Description 8/23/2014: The first reaction of Heads of State is to brace for rioting. The establishment anticipates that every crop shortage, every water shortage, every uptick in earthquakes or disease will be related to the pending passage, with a demand for government action. What then? Depending upon the country and the culture, martial law will evolve everywhere. We have endlessly advised that those wanting to survive move to rural areas and learn to garden and keep flocks and herds, well ahead of the time when travel restrictions might be imposed. Have a foot hold in the country, so that you and your family can move there when the time comes.

Then in 2016 in line with trends to establish family or community gardens not only in the inner cities but in the suburbs, we featured Suburban Gardens. The concept of the co-op was gaining traction, where a group tends the gardens and shares the produce. If the produce is abundant, the co-op markets the produce for sale. By 2019 a co-op in Detroit was a strong role model.



Florida Lawns are being Transformed into Edible Farms

Gary Henderson can eat his lawn. Row upon neat row of tomatoes, carrots, sweet lettuce and arugula are growing in the front yard of his home in Orlando, Florida. Volunteers regularly visit his home to maintain his bountiful vegetable garden. Henderson can keep a portion of whatever grows there for free. The rest is sold at local markets and 100 percent of those sales go back into the organization, covering the costs of such needs as irrigation, compost and seeds. It's estimated that the average American meal travels about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate, according to the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture.



Pastor Blends Faith, Farms to End Food Insecurity in Black Churches

The pastor at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland, noticed more members of his congregation were suffering from diet-related illnesses. So Brown turned to seeds, in addition to scripture, and started a garden on a 1,500-square-foot plot of land in front of the church. Today, that garden grows everything from summer squash to kale, and yields 1,100 pounds of produce - all to feed the community that meets weekly to worship. Brown partnered with black farmers in the area to bring pop-up markets to the church after Sunday service. In 2015, Brown launched The Black Church Food Security Network - a grassroots initiative that empowers black churches to establish a sustainable food system. Too often, food insecure communities receive charity, which is great in emergency situations, but is not a long-term fix.
By 2020 feeding the family had taken a bold leap into the 1 Acre Farm concept, which included fruit trees and berry bushes and grazing land for goats and free range chickens. This concept was featured on the USAEBN regular broadcasts on November 2, 2020 and is available as a YouTube or as part of the non-profit DVD or download material proferred by the ZetaTalk Team.
