Post Way Cool Innovation
At last I find one cool new energy product!

This is a real fine design and you can capitalize on it by letting your better half do the charging! Smart way to get her into the camping thing, if need be! :roflmao

Hey - good question ruts, as I actually did not, as the article was in a media page as a news pip.

Some research using the old faithful came up with warbs of news links, so here are a few: ---

PS? TIA?? :?:

Orange Power Wellies convert all that dancin' to juice for your mobile

Image

We're coming upon festival season again, and you know what that means -- Orange is dragging their solar energy tent to Glastonbury. This year, prepare to charge your mobile phone while checking out the acts at the John Peel Stage, courtesy of your new Power Wellies. Developed in partnership with GotWind, the soles of the boots collect heat all day and, using something called the Seebeck effect, this heat is converted into electricity -- electricity that can be used to recharge your phone later that night. As if you needed an excuse to dance in the first place! PR after the break.

Then from the uber smooth/green network/service provider company themselves--

Wellies 'to recharge mobile phones'

Image

Mobile phone users need not fear running out of power at this summer's festivals thanks to the launch of wellies that can recharge your handset.

The hi-tech boots convert heat created by the feet into an electrical current using a unique "power-generating sole".

Orange created the wellies with the help of renewable energy experts GotWind and will showcase them at the Glastonbury Festival, which it sponsors, later this month.

Twelve hours of stomping through the event, infamous for its muddy setting, will produce enough power from the Orange Power Wellies to power a mobile phone for one hour.

But the makers recommend taking the boots to the dance tents as the hotter your feet get, the more energy they create.

Dave Pain, managing director at GotWind, said: "Wellies are now the staple festival footwear and the Orange Power Wellies not only keep you dry but they also provide a crucial eco-electricity source."

Andrew Pearcey, head of sponsorship at Orange UK, said: "Orange remain loyal to the green ethos of the Glastonbury Festival and are committed to researching exciting new energy sources that can be used on site to ensure people can stay in touch with their nearest and dearest.

"The Orange Power Wellies use clean and renewable energy to create valuable electricity, ensuring festival-goers can text and phone their mates for the duration of the weekend."

Previous eco-friendly festival innovations by Orange include a foot pump which created electricity and a charger which sourced power from a person as they danced.

So the Technology is ...

Researchers say "spin Seebeck effect" could lead to new batteries, storage

Image

You know something's a long way from becoming an actual product when we're just talking about the discovery of an "effect," but a team of researchers at Keio University in Yokohama, Japan say that the so-called "spin Seebeck effect" they've discovered could eventually have some pretty big implications for all sorts of devices. According to Science News, the researchers found that by heating one side of a magnetized nickel-iron rod they were able to change the arrangement of the electrons in the material according to their "spins," which is the quantum-physics equivalent of the south-north magnetic axes in bar magnets. One of the big advantages of that, it seems, is that, unlike with electric currents, transferring information by "flipping spins" does not generate heat, which would let "spintronics devices" operate at higher speeds without overheating, and cut down on power consumption in the process.

And FINALLY - from the innovators themselves (but their SHOP is not available yet, so seems that we're all gonna have to go the Glastonbury Festival ourselves for a pair! Could be an interesting idea??!!?? A GT Power meet :roflmao )

Thermoelectric wellies that charge your mobile phone using heat from your feet

Image

Orange today unveils the Orange Power Wellies, a groundbreaking and innovative eco mobile phone charging prototype created to keep Glastonbury Festival goers connected with their friends across the weekend.

The Orange Power Wellies, created in collaboration with renewable energy experts GotWind, use a unique ‘power generating sole’ that converts heat from your feet into an electrical current. This ‘welectricity’ can then be used to re-charge your mobile phone. Orange, Official Communications Partner for the Glastonbury Festival, will be showcasing the Orange Power Wellies prototype onsite.

Twelve hours of stomping through the Glastonbury Festival in your Orange Power Wellies will give you enough power to charge a mobile phone for one hour. To increase the length of time you can charge your phone for, simply hot step it to the dance tent because the hotter your feet get, the more energy you produce.

How it works. After a full days festival frolics you can plug your phone into the power output at the top of the welly and use the energy that has been generated throughout the day to charge your phone. The power collected in the ‘power generating sole’ is collected via a process known as the ‘Seebeck’ effect. Inside the power generating sole there are thermoelectric modules constructed of pairs of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials forming a thermocouple. These thermocouples are connected electrically forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers. When the heat from the foot is applied on the top side of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side, from the cold of the ground, electricity is generated.

Dave Pain, Managing Director at GotWind said: “GotWind are excited to be working with Orange for a fourth year to create an invaluable charging prototype for festival goers. Wellies are now the staple festival footwear, the Orange Power Wellies not only keep you dry but they also provide a crucial eco electricity source.”
Andrew Pearcey, Head of Sponsorship at Orange UK said: “Orange remain loyal to the green ethos of the Glastonbury Festival and are committed to researching exciting new energy sources that can be used on site to ensure people can stay in touch with their nearest and dearest. The Orange Power Wellies use clean and renewable energy to create valuable electricity ensuring festival goers can text and phone their mates for the duration of the weekend”.

The Orange Power Wellies are the latest innovation in Orange’s bid to find alternative sustainable and eco friendly mobile phone charging technologies that can be used at the Glastonbury Festival. Previous projects have included the Recharge Pod powered by wind and solar energy, Dance Charger which drew upon kinetic energy created by dancing and the Orange Power Pump which uses the energy created from a traditional foot pump and converted it into electricity.

Will be following this technology closely - as we need it!!
