Post subject:  Happy Birthday to the Republic of Texas

My grand ole Lone Star State is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. If you get a chance, come on down! We'll show you a great time at the Alamo, Goliad and San Jacinto.

We'll feed you incredible Tex Mex food on the San Antonio Riverwalk, give ya a cold beer and a barbecue plate on 6th Street in Austin while you listen to foot stompin' music. We'll invite you to catch a big ole largemouth bass on a quiet lake at sunrise. We'll take you to Galveston and show you the monument to the 1900 hurricane. We'll take you to the piney woods of East Texas and show you quiet bayous, dogwoods in bloom, and gators. We'll take you to Spindletop in Beaumont and show you where da awl bidness began.

We'll take you to Space Center Houston and show you where manned space flight was born. We'll mourn with you at Dealey Plaza in Dallas. We'll take you to the rim of Palo Duro Canyon and show you bluebonnets in our beloved Hill Country. And, yes, we'll even take ya to Aggieland and let ya hear "Whoop!"

We'll take you to the Laguna Madre outside Corpus Christi flat fishing for big ole reds and speckled trout. We'll take you to El Paso, Laredo, Mission and Brownsville and show you the vibrant life on the border. We'll take you to the Big Bend National Park and float down the Rio Grande and then on to the MacDonald Observatory for some night viewing of the big ole Texas sky!

So come on down! We're waitin' for ya'll! :wavey

More than 600 Mexican troops were killed and more than 700 captured in the brief afternoon battle that represented a sea change in the future republic's fortunes. The victory came after disastrous Texas defeats at the Alamo and at Goliad, and after large numbers of Texas settlers fled eastward in advance of Mexican troops.
