Zimmerman Stuns Court, Waives Right to 'Stand Your Ground' Hearing in Trayvon Martin Case

By SENI TIENABESO and MATT GUTMAN | ABC News – 40 minutes ago

George Zimmerman's attorneys stunned court observers Tuesday when they waived their client's right to a "Stand Your Ground" hearing slated for April that might have led to a dismissal of the charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin a year ago.

However, the defense lawyers didn't say whether they would waive the immunity hearing outright. They left open the possibility for that hearing to be rolled into Zimmerman's second degree murder trial. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain in his Florida subdivision, shot and killed the teen, who was visiting a house in the area.

The move allows the defense more time to prepare for the trial this summer, but also raises the stakes.

Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law entitles a person to use deadly force if he believes his life is threatened, and absolves them of an obligation to retreat from a confrontation, even if retreat is possible.

In recent weeks, the Zimmerman defense has suffered several legal setbacks. Judge Debra Nelson has ruled in favor of the state that Zimmerman's bail conditions should not be loosened, and that Trayvon Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump was not required to sit for a deposition about his interactions with the state's most important witness, a young woman who was the last known person to speak with Trayvon Martin before his death on February 26 2012.

Beaumont man shot dead at Houston's Bush Airport
By Robert Stanton, Brian Rogers, Mike Glenn | May 2, 2013 | Updated: May 2, 2013 8:24pm

A Beaumont man shot and killed Thursday at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport was a reserved person who didn't talk much, neighbors said.

But 29-year-old Carnell Marcus Moore wrote of death on his Facebook page earlier Thursday, and according to Houston police, apparently left a suicide note where saying he was having trouble controlling his "monster inside."

Moore was killed in gunfire about 1:35 p.m. at Terminal B. Who fired the fatal shot is unclear.

HPD spokeswoman Kese Smith said an armed male in his early 30s entered the airport and fired a shot into the ceiling near a ticket counter in the pre-screening area of the terminal.

Hearing the shot, a Homeland Security investigations agent came out of his office and confronted Moore, ordering him to put down the gun, Smith said.

When Moore refused the command, the officer pulled out his weapon and the man turned toward him, Smith said.

The agent fired once, and Moore shot himself in the head apparently at the same time, Smith said. He died at the scene.

It was certainly an interesting afternoon in my neck of the woods!

East Texas and I were out and about this afternoon running some errands. As we were leaving Lowe's a little after 2:00 PM CT, we noticed two fighter planes circling and flying low.

Several people in the parking lot stopped along with us and looked at the jets. One man said "Wonder what's going on?"

We are experiencing a late season cold front with high, gusty winds so today was not a day conducive to flight operations from Ellington Field.

Yes, I live in the flight path of both Ellington Field and Hobby Airport.

It seems ALL flights to Houston Intercontinental Airport were diverted to Houston Hobby airport for about 3 hours this afternoon as this shooting unfolded.

We didn't find out what was going on until we returned home. Sat out on our porch and watched flight after flight coming in to land over our heads.

The fighter jets finally landed about 5:30 pm.

Very reminiscent of post 9/11. :nono :doh

Connecticut bill would allow Newtown families to decide fate of massacre records
By Associated Press,

HARTFORD, Conn. — The public release of any photograph, videotape or digital recording related to last year’s deadly Newtown elementary school shooting would require the written consent of victims’ family members, according to a working draft of a bill released Wednesday by the governor’s office.

The bill, crafted privately by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office, the state’s top prosecutor and legislative leaders, also would cover any recording depicting the physical condition of any of the victims of the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The draft also says only written transcriptions of any 911 calls related to the Dec. 14 shooting, not the audio, may be released to the public, for a fee of 50 cents per page.

The Connecticut Daily Newspapers Association, Connecticut Broadcasters Association and Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information sent a joint letter to Malloy, cautioning his administration and the legislature against restricting public access to information about what happened at Sandy Hook or other crimes, regardless of scope. Twenty first-graders and six educators were killed in Newtown.

“We maintain that public access to investigative reports, 9-1-1 emergency call transcripts and recordings, death certificates, and the like, serve the public’s best interest by permitting the public to monitor the performance of its government,” the group wrote.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey, D-Hamden, issued a statement stressing that the draft proposal is tailored to just Sandy Hook.

“Let’s hope we never face any situation like this again,” she said. “But will a situation of lesser degree cause similar concerns and lead to similar passage to deal with a very specific situation? That is probably not the best way to legislate overall.”

Murphy said she is also concerned the bill bypassed the traditional legislative process, such as a public hearing and committee reviews. It’s unclear when lawmakers will take up the legislation. The session is scheduled to adjourn on June 5.

“The fear would be that if bills are drafted without there being public comment and debate, that pass quickly, that can happen any other times that there is a circumstance that people say it’s warranted to do it that way,” she said.
