Post SHOOTINGS - UNUSUAL VIOLENCE
U. Of Alabama, Huntsville Shooting: 3 Dead, At Least 3 Hurt
February 12, 2010
By Frank James

Update at 7:05 pm ET -- University of Alabama, Huntsville spokesman Ray Garner, added very little useful information in a meeting with journalists a few minutes ago.

But the Huntsville Times has a lot of details including a photo of the alleged shooter.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- A biology professor is in custody in connection with three fatal shootings on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus Friday afternoon, according to a UAH official.

Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard-University trained neuroscientist, was taken into custody, and her husband has been detained. They have not been charged with a crime.

According to police, three people were killed and three were wounded when the shooter opened fire during a biology faculty meeting on the third floor of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology. The three injured people are being treated at Huntsville Hospital.

In June 2006, The Times published a story involving Bishop, biology professor and her husband, Jim Anderson, chief science officer of Cherokee Labsystems in Huntsville.

Bishop is quoted in the story as co-inventor of "InQ," a new cell growth incubator which promised to cut the costs, size and maintenance involved in the mechanics of cell generation.

My rough notes on what Ray Garner, the UAH spokesman, said:

Quote:
The shooter in custody. Three dead, three wounded. Shelby Building on lockdown. Campus closed until further notice. Five of victims were faculty. One was staff. The staff person was wounded. Don't have information on campus alerts, why they weren't timely. No information on shooter. No confirmation of shooter's identity. No students were involved. Parents can call 256 824 7777 to check on their children. All the wounded are in trauma unit at Huntsville Hospital. Don't know about gender of shooter. Huntsville police handling. Students who witnessed anything have given statements and were released.

Shooting at Knox school; 2 adults reported hurt

Associated Press - February 10, 2010 2:05 PM ET

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knoxville officials report a shooting has occurred at an elementary school after students had been dismissed for the day because of snowy weather.

Randy Kenner, communications coordinator for the city of Knoxville, said that the mayor's office was aware of a shooting Wednesday at Inskip Elementary School, but he directed questions regarding injuries to police.

Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk couldn't immediately be reached for comment by The Associated Press. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that DeBusk said two female employees were shot in the office of the school and both were alert and conscious.

DeBusk said no students were at school, which had dismissed classes early, during the shooting.

Officials learning more about school shooting
By Margo Gray - bio | email

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - There was plenty of anxiety for students at Discovery Middle School who returned to class today after a shooting forced the school to go into lockdown Friday.

School leaders and law enforcement are still trying to piece things together as students try to return to normalcy. They met today to offer more information in this ongoing investigation.

They want to keep assuring parents and students things are safe at school. Even still, more students were absent than normal at both Discovery Middle and Bob Jones High School.

For the students who did head back to Discovery Middle School after Friday's shooting, it was a day of hugs and tears.

Increased police presence and counselors helped in the process to calm fears.

It may be a long process of healing a school stunned by the death of 9th grader, Todd Brown, who was shot by the hands of fellow classmate.

Flowers, cards and teddy bears lined the halls of the school in memory of Todd.

"I hate that those kids had to go through that, I hate the adults had to go through that and especially Todd and his family," said superintendent Dee Fowler.

He spent the entire day at the school and joined the principal in meeting with students in each grade level to address rumors and concerns.

Many rumors are flying like the possibility of retaliation for the shooting.

Chief Larry Muncey said they are looking into each rumor and extra security will remain at the school as long as they are needed.

A woman was pushing a baby in a stroller Thursday morning when a man, reportedly armed with an ax, attacked them at random, killing the child and critically injuring the woman, Metro Police said.

A second woman also suffered stab wounds in a separate attack, police said.

A suspect, identified as Harold Montagu, 33, of Las Vegas was taken into custody, police said. No further information was released about Montagu or whether he has been charged in the attack.

Officers responded at 11:51 a.m. to the 1600 block of San Pedro Avenue, near Sahara Avenue and South Maryland Parkway, where they found a woman on the sidewalk and an upturned stroller in the street.

The woman and the baby, who was inside the stroller, suffered wounds to the body and head consistent with an ax attack, police said.

The baby, about 4 months old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, tentatively identified as the child’s mother, was taken to Sunrise Trauma Center in extremely critical condition, police said.

Their names were not immediately released.

Witnesses said the suspect had fled into a house, and as officers approached the residence, the suspect exited — without an ax — and attacked one of the officers, police said.

After a brief struggle in which the officer suffered minor injuries, Montagu was taken into custody, police said.

Officers then located a second female victim suffering from apparent multiple stab wounds in a rear bedroom of the residence, police said.

The second victim was transported to the University Medical Center, where she was in stable condition.

Police allege that Montagu initially stabbed the woman in the home then went outside, where he attacked the female and the infant in the stroller.

Montagu’s relationship with the victim inside the residence and a possible motive for that attack have not been determined, police said.

It appears the attack on the woman and infant outside the home was random, and the suspect did not know them.

"Upon the arrival of the zone cars, they found the male standing over the employee with an ax and a knife,” Sammy Morris with the Cleveland Police Department said.

Amy Bishop shot and killed her Brother in 1986, she was 19, he was 18 at the time. He was already an accomplished Violinist at the time, anyone else remember the story? I believe it took place in the suburbs of Detroit.
She fired 3 shots to his chest with a Shotgun.
The shooting was declared "Accidental" .
Official Police files are "Missing".

Teens shot during California church service

(CNN) -- A Sunday church service in Richmond, California, erupted into chaos when three gunmen opened fire on congregants, injuring two teens, according to police.

Police headed to the New Gethsemane Church of God in Christ about 12:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. ET), after three hooded men shot at churchgoers, Richmond police spokeswoman Bisa French told CNN.

"We're not sure if those two victims were targeted, but someone definitely in that general area where the victims were, was targeted," French said.

Police are unsure why the church, filled with more than 100 people, was attacked.

Romney threatened with violence on flight
Posted: February 16th, 2010 12:30 PM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

Romney took in the opening weekend at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

(CNN) – Even former presidential candidates are subject to the occasional annoyances of air travel.

A passenger seated in front of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's wife became "physically violent" when the former Republican presidential candidate asked the passenger to move his seat in a more upright position. :awe

The incident occurred Monday when the Romneys were headed from Vancouver, Canada to Los Angeles on an Air Canada flight, according to spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom.

In a statement to CNN, Fehrnstrom said "Romney did not retaliate, but instead allowed the airline crew to respond to the incident."

Following the uproar, the plane returned to the gate where the passenger was removed by airport police. Romney was not injured.

Arson suspect reportedly opens fire on deputies serving warrant
BREAKING NEWS

updated 4:37 p.m. CT, Thurs., Feb. 25, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. - A suspect in an arson opened fire Thursday on deputies and a fire investigator trying to serve an arrest warrant, authorities said. One officer was killed and two others wounded.

The dead officer was a Fresno County sheriff's deputy. A second deputy was hospitalized along with a Reedley police officer, The Fresno Bee reported.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

A witness, Bret McArron, told KSEE-TV the shooting occurred at a house in an impoverished neighborhood with a lot of mobile homes in the community of Minkler in eastern Fresno County.

The gunman barricaded himself inside the house and fired repeatedly on law enforcement officials, sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said. The standoff continued into the late afternoon.

Jim Stone, 46, who lives about 100 feet from the surrounded home, said he was evacuated after the shooting erupted. Stone said he heard what sounded like hundreds of shots.

Pentagon gunman dies after shootout with police

Washington (CNN) -- A man who was shot after calmly opening fire on two Pentagon police officers died early Friday, authorities said.

The gunman was John Patrick Bedell, a law enforcement source said. At a Friday morning news conference, Pentagon Police Chief Richard S. Keevill referred to him only as Bedell.

The 36-year-old man lived with his parents in Hollister, California, said Terry Sutherland, a Pentagon spokesman.

Bedell had "no real emotion in his face" as he approached the officers Thursday evening, Keevill said. He pulled a gun out of his pocket when asked for identification to enter the Pentagon, the chief said.

Keevill praised Officers Jeffrey Amos and Marvin Carraway for acting "quickly and decisively to neutralize him as a threat" without hurting anyone else.

The officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries -- one in the thigh and the other in the shoulder, the chief said.

Surveillance video shows the gunman acted alone, Keevill said.

"There are multiple angles showing the suspect in the time leading up to the shooting," he said. "We have Pentagon and Metro cameras of the area."

The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is routine in officer-involved shootings, Keevill added.

He applauded the officers for ensuring the gunman did not set foot in the nation's defense headquarters, where about 23,000 military and civilian employees work. :clap

The officers took less than a minute to neutralize him, the chief said, adding that their action saved lives.

"The Fort Hood incident put us on notice that this can happen anywhere," he said, referring to the Texas shooting in November that left 13 people dead.

As part of its investigation, the FBI is checking everywhere the suspect has ever visited, Keevill said.

The investigation closed the Pentagon subway station on Friday, affecting the commute of thousands of Washington-area residents. Officials did not say when it would reopen.

"It's a complicated crime scene. There were a lot of bullets fired," Keevill said.

The Pentagon Police Department, Arlington County, Virginia, Police Department, U.S. Secret Service and FBI were all involved in the investigation, Keevill said.

Police: 8 teens shot at Indiana skate rink
From Patty Lane, CNN

(CNN) -- Eight teenagers were wounded in a shooting Friday night at a skating rink in Gary, Indiana, police said Saturday.

Gary Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said that a fight broke out during or after the concert at the World of Skates roller rink on Friday, prompting the rink's manager to close up for the night.

"The manager asked everybody to leave, and when they went outside somebody just decided they would open fire and eight young people were shot," she said.

She said those wounded range in age from age 14 to 18. They were taken to local hospitals, although King said none has life-threatening injuries.

She was not certain if any remained hospitalized Saturday. No arrests have been made, she said.

A phone call to World of Skates was not immediately returned.

Employee killed, 2 wounded in Ohio State shooting

By MATT LEINGANG (AP) – 1 hour ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A shooting Tuesday morning at an Ohio State University campus maintenance building left one employee dead and two others wounded, the university said. A suspect was taken into custody.

The shooting was first reported at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, university Police Chief Paul Denton said at a news conference. The two wounded workers were taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where one was in critical condition and the other was in stable condition, he said. The third employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

Heavily armed campus officers searched buildings in the area, including a university power plant, and the person who police believe was responsible for the shooting was taken into custody, Denton said.

Police did not release any names. Investigators were trying to determine the suspect's motive, Denton said.

Ohio State, the nation's largest university, said no students were hurt and that classes would be held as scheduled.

"This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to all of the families," said Vernon Baisden, a university assistant vice president of public safety.

Graduate student Kiernan Gordon, 31, said he found out about the shooting from his wife, who called him on his cell phone while he was driving to campus. He said he didn't have any concerns about his own safety.

"Ohio State is really a city unto itself, and like any city it has problems unto itself," Gordon said.

The maintenance building where the shooting occurred is just east of Ohio Stadium, where the school's football team plays.

MEXICO CITY - Police say at least 80 gunmen terrorized a town in northern Mexico for several hours and killed four people.

Sonora state attorney general Abel Murrieta says the assailants arrived in the town of Maycoba in at least 15 pickup trucks, opened fire on the state police headquarters and set it ablaze.

Murrieta said Friday the assailants terrorized the town for at least five hours Thursday afternoon. He said the gunmen are members of organized crime but gave no other details.

In the central state of Morelos, police found the bodies of two men hanging from a bridge in the city of Cuernavaca.

Seven people were shot Saturday about 9:15 p.m. in the 700 block of Canal Street, near Royal Street, New Orleans police said.

Jeb Tate, a spokesman for the city's Emergency Medical Services, said one victim arrived at a nearby hospital in guarded condition. The rest were in stable condition.

Authorities said the shootings apparently followed a chance encounter at a McDonald's between two young men who had gotten into a dispute during Carnival.

One of the two, a 17-year-old who apparently was the intended target, was shot in the torso and was expected to be kept overnight at LSU Interim Public Hospital.

'Horrendous' scene: 4 dead, 2 wounded in Marquette Park home

In a scene police called "horrendous," a woman and three children were found shot to death in the bedrooms of a brick bungalow in Marquette Park this morning after a 12-year-old girl alerted police, authorities said. Two other people were critically wounded.

The children were the 7-month-old son of the gunman, his 3-year-old niece and his 16-year-old niece, who a friend said was four months pregnant. The fourth victim was a 30-year-old woman identified by family members as the gunman's wife.

The woman and her 7-month-old son were found in a bed with gunshot wounds to their heads, police said. In another bedroom, the 16-year-old was found in bed with the 3-year-old girl.

The two wounded were identified by family members as the gunman's mother and his 13-year-old nephew. They were taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, a fire department spokesman said.

A suspect was taken into custody several miles away about an hour and a half after the shootings, and told police he had been hearing voices that told him to kill his family, a law enforcement source said, citing preliminary information. He also told police he didn't have enough ammunition, the source said.

Two dead in hospital shooting, 2 others injured

The Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, will have chaplains and counselors available throughout the day Tuesday after an apparent murder-suicide left one of its employees dead and two wounded.

A gunman shot three women outside the hospital Monday afternoon before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said.

One of the victims, Rachel Wattenbarger, 40, died from gunshot wounds at Parkwest, police said.

Lawmakers: Military could quell Chicago violence

Sunday, April 25, 2010; 9:46 PM

CHICAGO -- Two Illinois lawmakers say violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard must be called in to help.

Chicago Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford made a public plea to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday to deploy troops.

The request comes amid a recent surge in violent crime, including a night last week that saw seven people killed and 18 wounded, mostly by gunfire.

Fritchey says Chicago has had 113 homicide victims this year. He says the police department has done a commendable job, but its resources are stretched thin.

Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis says he appreciates the lawmakers' frustration and willingness to help, but doubts the National Guard is the best answer.

A message left for Quinn wasn't returned Sunday.

Man stabs 28 children at kindergarten in China

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer Christopher Bodeen, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 16 mins ago

TAIXING, China – A knife-wielding man attacked a kindergarten class of 4-year-olds in eastern China on Thursday, slashing 28 children in what an expert said was a copycat rampage of two other episodes at Chinese schools in the past month.

A 47-year-old jobless man, Xu Yuyuan, burst into a classroom at the Zhongxin Kindergarten early Thursday, waving an eight-inch (20-centimeter) knife and stabbing a security guard who tried to stop him, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Five students were in critical condition following the attack in Jiangsu province's Taixing city and two teachers and the security guard were injured, said Zhu Guiming, an official with the Taixing propaganda department.

A series of school attacks in China in recent years have mostly been blamed on people with personal grudges or suffering from mental illness, leading to calls for improved security.

China's inadequate mental health network has left millions of unstable people without the help they need. Many otherwise healthy Chinese also feel frustrated and powerless because they aren't able to adapt to the constant social upheaval and because they believe the changes favor the corrupt. That kind of anger has occasionally erupted in mass violence and in isolated attacks.

It is not known why schools are targeted.

On Wednesday, a teacher on sick leave due to mental illness broke into a primary school in Guangdong province's Leizhou city in southern China and wounded 15 students and a teacher in a knife attack. That attack came on the same day a man was executed for killing eight children last month in stabbings that shocked China.

It was not known if Xu knew about the previous day's attack in Guangdong, but Zhou Xiaozheng, a sociology professor at Renmin University in Beijing, said these sorts of violent attacks often happen in clusters because one may trigger copycat attacks.

"It's like suicide, which is another type of mental health problem that can spread in a community," said Zhou. "Normally, with these kind of violent events we hope the media won't blow them up too much. Because that tends to make it spread."

Post Re: SHOOTINGS - UNUSUAL VIOLENCE
This is going to start happening more and more, with a lot of increased intensity and violence as summer comes. There will be riots and violence instigated by gangs, who will infiltrate groups, or just cause their own violence. Some of you may remember being told a couple of years ago that we had to watch out for gang activity. As law enforcement ranks dwindle from lack of funding (or chiefs retiring ...??) gangs will take over and run their own "districts".

18 businesses damaged after immigrants' rights march turns violent in Santa Cruz, Calif.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Close to 20 businesses were damaged after what started as a peaceful immigrants' rights march in downtown Santa Cruz turned violent, requiring police to call other agencies for help, authorities said.

Police spokesman Zach Friend said an estimated 250 people started marching through the city around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

It was a harmonious but "unpermitted and unsanctioned event," he said, until some in the crowd started breaking windows and spraying paint on retail shops that line the downtown corridor.

Friend said he wasn't sure if the damage was caused by people marching in support of immigrants' rights, or if the group was "infiltrated by anarchists."

Anarchy signs were spray-painted on some of the buildings.

"They're a group of people who seem to fancy themselves as revolutionaries, but what they really are are a group of morons," Friend said.

A fire was started in a coffee shop entryway but was extinguished once police cleared the way for firefighters, Friend said.

Eighteen businesses were damaged, with the cost of repairs estimated at between $50,000 and $100,000. No injuries were reported.

Once officers arrived from other agencies, police were able to restore order in about 20 minutes, Friend said.

One person was arrested on suspicion of committing vandalism, though police expect to make additional arrests once investigators have a chance to gather video of the event.

"I assure you, more people will be held accountable for this as we review videos," Friend said.
