Post Obama agency rules Pepsi's use of aborted fetal cells OK!
Obama agency rules Pepsi's use of aborted fetal cells in soft drinks constitutes 'ordinary business operations'

The Obama Administration has given its blessing to PepsiCo to continue utilizing the services of a company that produces flavor chemicals for the beverage giant using aborted human fetal tissue. LifeSiteNews.com reports that the Obama Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) has decided that PepsiCo's arrangement with San Diego, Cal.-based Senomyx, which produces flavor enhancing chemicals for Pepsi using human embryonic kidney tissue, simply constitutes "ordinary business operations."

The issue began in 2011 when the non-profit group Children of God for Life (CGL) first broke the news about Pepsi's alliance with Senomyx, which led to massive outcry and a worldwide boycott of Pepsi products. At that time, it was revealed that Pepsi had many other options at its disposal to produce flavor chemicals, which is what its competitors do, but had instead chosen to continue using aborted fetal cells -- or as Senomyx deceptively puts it, "isolated human taste receptors" (http://www.naturalnews.com).

A few months later, Pepsi' shareholders filed a resolution petitioning the company to "adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements." But the Obama Administration shut down this 36-page proposal, deciding instead that Pepsi's used of aborted babies to flavor its beverage products is just business as usual, and not a significant concern.

"We're not talking about what kind of pencils PepsiCo wants to use -- we are talking about exploiting the remains of an aborted child for profit," said Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of CGL, concerning the SEC decision. "Using human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) to produce flavor enhancers for their beverages is a far cry from routine operations!"

To be clear, the aborted fetal tissue used to make Pepsi's flavor chemicals does not end up in the final product sold to customers, according to reports -- it is used, instead, to evaluate how actual human taste receptors respond to these chemical flavorings. But the fact that Pepsi uses them at all when viable, non-human alternatives are available illustrates the company's blatant disregard for ethical and moral concerns in the matter.

Pepsi responds to fake stem cell issue

Posted on March 17, 2012

The venerable, unbiased website, LifeNews.com, reports that Pepsi has responded to the claims that there are fetal stem cells in their beverage and/or that Pepsi uses fetal stem cells for research. Pepsi responded that there are no fetal cells in any Pepsi products and further is quoted:

“Thank you for contacting us at PepsiCo. There are no stem cells, cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses, or fetal tissues in any PepsiCo products. The integrity of our products is critical to PepsiCo, and we use only ingredients that meet all FDA and other regulatory standards. Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.”

This whole “controversy”, invented by anti-choice, anti-stem cell research extremists has generated a lot of confusion. In previous blogs posts, I’ve sought to set the record straight on this manufactured controversy with posts such as Stem Cells in my Pepsi?, Stem cell myths: from Pepsi to Obama & snowflake babies, and SEC rules in favor of Pepsi on bogus stem cell propaganda.

The bottom line is that there are no stem cells in Pepsi and in fact the cells in question, 293T, are not even stem cells. They are kidney progenitor cells.

The anti-choice, anti-stem cell folks seem to have delusions of grandeur of their manufactured, fake controversy as their article says:

LifeNews contacted Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, the organization that exposed the PepsiCo- Senomyx collaboration last year, for a response.

“Pepsi is in panic mode it seems,” she said. “They have been contacting media outlets telling them that they are not funding any research using cells or tissues from embryos or aborted fetuses, however this is pure deception on their part.”

While I don’t believe that Pepsi is in a panic, they are rightfully trying to set the record straight. In contrast, the nuts on the other side are spreading more propaganda.

Post Re: Obama agency rules Pepsi's use of aborted fetal cells OK
Reading the original post, it states that the fetal cells are not in the drink product itself, but used in research to determine how actual human taste receptors respond to these chemical flavorings. It is the fact that Pepsi uses human cells when "non-human alternatives are available illustrates the company's blatant disregard for ethical and moral concerns in the matter." Even when Pepsi shareholders petitioned the company to change its policies, they were disregarded, called inconsequential.

Pepsi's attempt to say that there are no fetal cells in its drinks is another example of blowing smoke. The accusation is NOT that there are human cells of any type in its drinks, it is the use of them in research where there are other viable options that is being criticized and petitioned against. Notice in Pepsi's rebuttal, it does not address this issue, but goes on and on saying it doesn't have stem cells in its drinks, which nobody said it did in the first place. Another smoke and mirrors.
