Louisiana State of Emergency: Oil and gas sinkhole disaster area risks and rights violations escalating

A possible breach of a butane-filled well 1500 feet from Bayou Corne's sinkhole, the size of three football fields, is so "very serious," it has Assumption Parish sheriff and local residents ordered to evacuate worried about a catastrophic explosion, one according to scientists in an Examiner investigation, would be in the range of one and a half B83 thermonuclear (hydrogen) bombs, the most powerful United States weapons in active service.

Scientists show Bayou Corne butane well explosion would have same effect as 100 Hiroshima bombs

“The disaster is made all the more worrisome because the hole is believed to be close to a well containing 1.5 million barrels of liquid butane, a highly volatile liquid that turns into a highly flammable vapor upon release,” CNN reported Friday about Louisiana's declared State of Emergency.

Earlier it was reported the butane-filled well is only 1500 feet from the sinkhole and it will not be emptied.

A breach of that well, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said, could be "catastrophic,” CNN reports.

If ignited, the butane well would release as much explosive energy as 100 Hiroshima bombs, Deborah Dupré's scientist sources told her Sunday.

The Bayou Corne Sinkhole has been enlarging since it first appeared in August. I have been following some of the developments through Dutchsinse on FB. There is too much to post at length here, but I will give a few headlines. All this info comes from a site called "The Louisiana Sinkhole Bugle". If you are interested in more detail, this is a whole web page devoted to this ongoing and worsening disaster. The site questions that there may be a link between this sinkhole and the oil rig disaster in the Gulf, and also the effect the gases coming up and moving through the earth's crust might have on the New Madrid Fault.

Sinkhole cavern owner billed $321,000

Houston-based Texas Brine Co. has been asked to reimburse the Assumption Parish for about $321,000 in expenses so far in its response to a sinkhole the state says has been caused by the company’s failed salt cavern. Assumption Parish officials have asked the chemical company Texas Brine for $321,000 to pay for its expenses to manage the Bayou Corne emergency situation. The state is blaming Texas Brine for all of the disaster that has been ongoing for over four months . . . .

The expanding sinkhole is moving closer to one of Louisiana's strategic oil supply sites, labeled "Oxy#3.

Methane contributing to Louisiana explosions and flare-ups?

Scientists have said a meteor hitting methane in north Louisiana could cause an explosion. It has been speculated that methane from Louisiana oil and gas industry is seeping and could account for Camp Minden's bunker exploding.

Near Camp Minden, Lake Bistineau has been smoldering for over two months, since about the time Bayou Corne's sinkhole appeared, following two months of methane bubbling bayous that have been expanding to other sites since then and causing concerns about explosions.

Emptied to eradicate an invasive fern, Lake Bistineau has been subject of ongoing fires, the kind that continue erupting after extinguishing, the kind the Heilig family experienced in their back yard near Bayou Corne, where methane seeps and bubbles amid a state of emergency and mandatory evacuation, related to a sinkhole now the size of five football fields.

This is just a sampling. When new events occur I will post here.

TV: Residents by sinkhole “believe nothing will be done until someone dies” — Tremors increased on same day dangerous gas found — Followed by ‘debris’ rising to surface

Quote:
According to the Assumption Parish Police Jury website, increased seismic activity was recorded between 6 p.m. and midnight, Tuesday. The cause of this activity is unknown at this time. The tremors occurred on the same day dangerous gases were discovered at one of the vent wells at the sinkhole. [...]

Hydrogen Sulfide is a poisonous, flammable gas and has a very bad odor. The smell is described as the smell of rotten eggs. Unlike methane, it is heavier than air and collects at low to the ground levels. No community air monitors have detected Hydrogen Sulfide.

Quote:
Debris, apparently from the bottom of the sinkhole, rose to the surface accompanied by a brief period of water movement. That debris is being cleared from the surface.

La. salt dome collapse 'sinkhole' lake might be 30 football fields large
Dec. 19, 2012

The Napoleonville Salt Dome collapse, formerly called the Bayou Corne "sinkhole," could ultimately grow to an area of more than 30 football fields, according to scientists on Monday, indicating there will be a new salt lake over the sunken dome.

snip

Ponville was expressing one of many issues worrying Cajuns in the area of the collapsing 1-mile by 3-mile Napoleonville Salt Dome. Their Acadian homes balance above the dome and its ongoing leaking gas and earthquakes.

The collapsing area, filled with salt water and hydrocarbons with traces of hydrogen sulfide and radioactivity, once hidden by swamp oaks and other sub-tropical flora, can now be viewed from Hwy. 70, as this author observed and reported from the area in November.

snip

The discovery of the collapsed area followed two months of locals' alarming reports to officials that earthquakes and gas bubbles were occurring. It was the "sinkhole," however that prompted Gov. Bobby Jindal to declare a mandatory evacuation of approximately 150 homes.

Although the salt dome slurry area has increased four fold, the mandatory evacuation area has not, despite public outcry for the governor to expand the evacuation zone. The Louisiana governor has yet to make a public appearance at the 6-month disaster area. Such an appearance would provide national news attention that locals want, but not necessarily what the oil and gas industry want.
