Neil Armstrong Dead: American Astronaut And First Man On The Moon Dies At Age 82

Image

American astronaut Neil Armstrong has died at age 82, confirms Reuters.

He had undergone heart surgery just weeks ago. NBC Nightly News tweeted that Armstrong passed away at 2:45 p.m. today due to complications from that surgery.

Armstrong was the first person to step on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. He sent the infamous message back to Earth, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Neil Armstrong, 1st man on the moon, dies
LISA CORNWELL, Associated Press

Updated 2:42 p.m., Saturday, August 25, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) — Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died. He was 82.

Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, a statement Saturday from his family said. It didn't say where he died.

HIGH FLIGHT

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee

I have my fingers crossed that he wrote a biography that lays the the moon "hoax" landings(?!?) bare to tell the truth. As I understand it he was also a Mason. SO there will be more than just the public recognition going down.

RIP Neil!

According to news reports, his family asked us to "wink at the Moon" in remembrance.

I love it! :heart
