FBI interviewed dead Boston bombing suspect years ago

The FBI admitted Friday they interviewed the now-deceased Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev two years ago and failed to find any incriminating information about him.

As first reported by CBS News correspondent Bob Orr, the FBI interviewed Tsarnaev, the elder brother of at-large bombing suspect Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, at the request of a foreign government to see if he had any extremist ties, but failed to find any linkage.

Both Tsarnaev brothers were legal permanent residents of the U.S. There is no evidence so far that either brother received any tactical training.

Although the FBI initially denied contacting Tsarnaev, the brothers' mother said they had in an interview with Russia Today.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said her son got involved in "religious politics" about five years ago, and never told her he was involved in "jihad."

She insisted the FBI "knew what he was doing on Skype" and that they counseled him "every step of the way."

FBI agents were scrambling to review a six-month visit to Russia by 26-year-old Tsarnaev last year, during which he stayed with his father in Dagestan and is reported to have visited the family's ethnic home of Chechnya.

Glenn Beck Is Undeterred By Reality On Saudi Nationals And The Boston Bombings
Blog ››› April 18, 2013 9:16 PM EDT ››› EMILY ARROWOOD

Hours after it was debunked, Glenn Beck continued to beat the drum of a conspiracy theory that the Obama administration is deporting a Saudi national who was behind the tragic bombings at the Boston marathon.

The conspiracy theory arose when Steve Emerson, a guest on Fox News' Hannity, accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of preparing to deport a Saudi national "person of interest" in the bombings at the Boston marathon. Right-wing blogs like Glenn Beck's The Blaze, Breitbart.com, WND, and Infowars quickly latched on to the story, alleging President Obama wishes to cover up Saudi Arabian and Al Qaeda ties to the attack.

The myth pretends that a Saudi national who was hospitalized after sustaining injuries in the bombing -- initially reported to be a "person of interest," though he never was -- is the same man DHS is allegedly in the process of deporting for visa violations.

DHS soundly discredited the conspiracy theory this afternoon, explaining to CNN's Jake Tapper that the rumors are confusing two very different men.

Still, hours later, Beck continued to run with the debunked conspiracy on his television program, claiming his "sources" knew better (emphasis added):

Quote:
We at the Blaze know that this Saudi national is a bad, bad, bad man ... This administration is playing an extraordinarily dangerous game. They have very little regard for what it takes to be a citizen. Before the sequester cuts happened, they opened the prison and let illegals out. Who does that? Remember also, the Saudi national that was -- is about to get on a plane -- involved in blowing the legs off of American citizens, being held in protective custody or being protected, at least, by our administration. He will be put in protective custody and the plans are to deport him.

Beck's claims, of course, are far from true.

Quote:
One Saudi national is in a Boston hospital and "is not a suspect, nor is he a person of interest. He was an individual at the marathon, and therefore, like so many individuals, has been questioned," DHS clarified today, according to Tapper. He went on:

There is a second Saudi national from the Boston area who is in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody for being in violation of his visa. This case has nothing to do with the Boston Marathon.

The FBI was contacted regarding the Saudi national who was taken into ICE custody, but DHS tells CNN that individual is in no way connected to the Boston Marathon bombing.

A DHS official concluded to Buzzfeed.com, "The rumor is one hundred percent false ... One hundred percent false."

The aftermath of the Boston bombing has been marked with inaccurate reporting from right-wing media.

Rosa Golijan , NBC News – 15 hrs.

Reddit publicly apologizes 'for the pain' caused to family of falsely accused student

The family of Sunil Tripathi endured much emotional pain as speculation swirled that the still-missing Brown University student was a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing. Users of the Reddit social news site fanned the flames — and now they, along with the site's leadership, are apologizing to Tripathi's family.

"We have apologized privately to the family of missing college student Sunil Tripathi, as have various users and moderators," Erik Martin, Reddit's general manager, wrote in a blog post on Monday. He continued:

Quote:
We want to take this opportunity to apologize publicly for the pain they have had to endure. We hope that this painful event will be channeled into something positive and the increased awareness will lead to Sunil's quick and safe return home. We encourage everyone to join and show your support to the Tripathi family and their search.

Martin noted that while "some of the activity on Reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties," the crowd-sleuthing began "with noble intentions."

He also pointed out that the importance of Reddit's long-standing policy "to not allow personal information on [the] site" was emphasized in this situation. "We hoped that the crowdsourced search for new information would not spark exactly this type of witch hunt," Martin writes. "We were wrong. The search for the bombers bore less resemblance to the types of vindictive Internet witch hunts our no-personal-information rule was originally written for, but the outcome was no different."

Reddit users weren't alone in spreading false accusations about Tripathi. On Twitter, various high-follower accounts tweeted that police scanners identified Tripathi as a suspect. Around the same time, Facebook users posted accusations on a page set up to help locate the missing student.

Shortly after 2 a.m. ET on Friday, NBC News, via correspondent Pete Williams, reported on Twitter that "speculation that one of the bombing suspects is a missing student is not correct," citing law enforcement sources. By Friday afternoon, Martin quietly sent an initial apology to the Tripathi family via email. The family shared this email with NBC News at the time.

How very sad is this? :(

Report: 140 detained in Russian raid targeting suspected extremists
By CNN Staff
updated 10:56 PM EDT, Fri April 26, 2013

(CNN) -- Russian authorities detained 140 people -- more than 30 of them foreign nationals -- on Friday in a raid targeting suspected members of Islamic extremist groups, state media reported.

The operation was conducted at a place of worship in Dar Ul-Arkam in southern Moscow, state-run RIA Novosti reported, citing information from law enforcement agencies.

Members of Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB, carried out the raid along with police. Russia Today, a state-funded television network, said the FSB issued a statement about the raid.

This site has been visited in the past by suspected radicals -- some from the North Caucasus region, which includes Chechnya -- the RIA Novosti report said.

Anybody else find this just a tad bit strange? Placed this little gem here because my spidey sense is tingling.

Remember - there are no coincidences. :hmm

Sources: Boston bombs built in older Tsarnaev's home, first target was July 4
By Steve Almasy, CNN
updated 9:06 PM EDT, Thu May 2, 2013

(CNN) -- The bombs used in the Boston Marathon attack were built in the apartment that suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev shared with his wife and child, a U.S. law enforcement official with first-hand knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Thursday. The official was not authorized to release the information.

Katherine Russell, Tsarnaev's widow, has remained largely out of view inside her parents' North Kingstown home since her husband's death.

It remains unclear what, if anything, Tamerlan's widow might have known or suspected, the source added.

According to her attorney, Amato DeLuca, the 24-year-old widow knew nothing of plans to bomb the race, and reports of her husband's involvement came as an "absolute shock" to Russell and her family.

Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar, initially planned to carry out a suicide-bomb attack on July 4, a U.S. law enforcement official told CNN. The source said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told investigators their bombs were ready earlier than they expected and they decided to move up the date.

It is unclear which specific event would have been targeted but one of the biggest July Fourth celebrations in the country is held in Boston. The annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular hosts 500,000 spectators, according to the event's website. It is televised live nationally on CBS.

The revelation comes the same day the body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev was claimed and later was picked up by a funeral home, according to Terrel Harris, spokesman for the Massachusetts office of the chief medical examiner.

Harris declined to release details as to who claimed the body or which funeral home picked it up.

Tsarnaev's cause of death will not be released until the death certificate is filed with the Boston city clerk, he said. The earliest that's expected to happen is Friday morning, Harris said.

One item that may yield some clues into the bombings case is now in the hands of federal officials.

The FBI has a laptop belonging to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Tamerlan's younger brother, two federal law enforcement officials told CNN.

The computer was turned over to investigators by one of his friends accused of obstructing justice.

A lawyer for Dias Kadyrbayev tells CNN that his client "turned over the laptop to the FBI." He didn't say when the laptop was turned over.

A law enforcement source confirmed the attorney's account.

Ron Paul: Police Manhunt for Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Scarier Than Attack

Former Rep. Ron Paul said the law enforcement that swarmed around Boston in the days following the marathon bombings was scarier than the actual terrorist attack.

“The Boston bombing provided the opportunity for the government to turn what should have been a police investigation into a military-style occupation of an American city,” he said on the Lew Rockwell website, Politico reported. “This unprecedented move should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself.”

The terror attacks on April 15 in Boston killed three and injured 264.

Mr. Paul, a former libertarian political candidate who served in Congress as a member of the Republican Party, said the door-to-door searches police conducted in Watertown for the bombing suspects were particularly alarming.

They reminded of a “military coup in a far off banana republic,” he said, Politico reported. “Force lockdown of a city. Militarized police riding tanks in the streets. Door-to-door armed searches without warrant. Families thrown out of their homes at gunpoint to be searched without probable cause. Businesses forced to close. Transport shut down.”

Mr. Paul reminded the surviving suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was ultimately discovered by a civilian, and not due to police crackdown, Politico reported.

“He was discovered by a private citizen, who then placed a call to the police,” he said. “And he was identified not by government surveillance cameras, but by private citizens who willingly shared their photographs with the police.”
