An earthquake hit Spain and Portugal Thursday night at around 2:3am, with a strength of 6.3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake originated about 100 kilometers southwest of Cape St. Vincent in the atlantic Ocean, at a depth of 58 kilometers, according to Spain’s seismological institute and National Geographic Institute.

The earthquake was felt in Sevilla, Cadiz, Malaga, Cordoba, Huelva as well as other cities across Andalucia and Portugal. According to the Spanish media there have been no casualties or damages. The emergency lines in Spain received over 450 calls until 6am Thursday morning, out of them 282 from Sevilla and 176 from Huelva.

The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at 5.7 magnitude on its different moment magnitude scale. It said the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

:clap recall!

We need to keep a close eye on this. From Wikipedia:

Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault, also called the Azores-Gibraltar fault zone (AGFZ), is a major geologic fault which runs eastward from the eastern end of the Terceira Rift in the Azores, extending through the Strait of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea. It forms part of the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate. The extension east of the Strait of Gibraltar is poorly understood and is currently regarded as a "diffuse" boundary. Somewhere in the vicinity of the Italian Peninsula, many geologists believe the fault connects with a subduction zone where the African Plate is slowly subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate.

The fault is a right lateral moving type of transform fault, moving about 4 mm per year, but eastern segments of the fault show evidence of compression as well.
