Wednesday, February 6, 2013 5:30

February 6, 2013 – SOLOMON ISLANDS - Several people were killed when tsunami waves generated by a major earthquake slammed into the Solomon Islands, damaging villages, as warnings were triggered across the Pacific. At least five people died after the 8.0 magnitude quake struck near the remote Santa Cruz Islands in the Solomons at a depth of 28.7km. Two powerful aftershocks of 6.4 and 6.6 magnitude were also recorded. “We can report five dead and three injured. One of the dead was a male child, three were elderly women and one an elderly man,” said Chris Rogers, a registered nurse at Lata Hospital in the Santa Cruz Islands.

Quake reported in eastern Canada
By CNN Staff
updated 11:17 AM EDT, Fri May 17, 2013

(CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 struck eastern Canada on Friday morning, the government said.

The quake was centered about 13 miles from Shawville, Quebec, near the Ontario border.

Authorities say it is unlikely the quake, which occurred at 9:43 a.m., caused significant damage. An aftershock was recorded as well.

"We had a lot of shaking, that's for sure," said Kim Bulmer, town clerk of nearby Renfrew, Ontario. "But I just checked with the public works director and there does not seem to be any reports of damage so far."

Eastern Canada has a relatively low rate of earthquake activity, according to the Natural Resources Canada agency, but there have been large earthquakes before, with about four exceeding a magnitude 4 per year.

Magnitude 8.2 earthquake strikes Russian Far East

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off Russia's eastern coast on Friday, briefly prompting a tsunami scare but causing no casualties or substantial damage, Russian emergency authorities said.

The epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 385 miles in the Sea of Okhotsk, 244 miles west of the nearest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the main city on the Kamchatka peninsula and home to a nuclear submarine base, and on Sakhalin island, where Russia's largest liquefied natural gas project is located.

Regional emergency authorities issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin and the Kurile islands, advising residents of dangerous areas to seek high ground, but lifted the warning several minutes later.

Residents of northern Japan felt the quake but there was no tsunami warning from Japan's meteorological agency.

5.7-magnitude quake widely felt across N. Calif.

An earthquake in far northeastern California was felt by thousands of people as far away as San Francisco and in two other states, but there have been no reports of injury or serious damage.

The magnitude-5.7 quake broke dishes and shook mirrors when it struck at 8:47 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

It was centered near Greenville, about 25 miles southwest of Susanville in far northeastern California, said Rafael Abreu, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo.

There have been several aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.9 that struck early Friday morning.

Slight damage has been reported including objects falling from shelves and dishes rattled or broken, according to a report from the National Weather Service.

Thousands of people reported feeling the quake, as far away as the San Francisco Bay area and across the borders into Oregon and Nevada, according to the USGS website.

KCRA-TV in Sacramento reported that the Plumas County temblor was felt in downtown Sacramento, about 145 miles south of the epicenter.

The following is according to Dutchsinse on FB

USGS wiped off the Utah 4.2 and the southern california 4.7M earthquakes!
almost like it never happened..

6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes off New Zealand coast
From Mitra Mobasherat, CNN

updated 3:48 AM EDT, Sun July 21, 2013

(CNN) -- A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was about 35 miles (57 kilometers) south of Wellington, New Zealand, the USGS said. The quake struck at a depth of 6.3 miles (10.1 kilometers).

No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake was the latest in a series of tremors that have jolted New Zealand's Lower North Island in the past few days.

Residents reported some structural damage after the 6.9 magnitude quake, but it was not immediately clear whether there were any serious injuries.

Quake hits northwest China; 89 dead
By Hilary Whiteman, CNN

updated 10:09 AM EDT, Mon July 22, 2013

(CNN) -- Rescue teams are scrambling to reach the site of Monday morning's strong and shallow earthquake in northwestern China that has killed at least 89 people, according to state media.

Another 584 people were injured and 17 were believed missing after the quake tore through Gansu Province, state media reported.

The quake hit along the border of two counties -- Min and Zhang -- at around 7:45 a.m. local time, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Emergency services are converging on the area, including the Red Cross Society of China, which is sending 200 tents and other supplies to shelter and sustain those left without homes.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged crews to prioritize the rescue of survivors and minimize casualties.

The original quake and powerful aftershocks caused roofs to collapse, cut telecommunications lines and damaged a major highway linking the provincial capital of Lanzhou to the south, according to the China Daily newspaper.

More than 300 armed police troops and 64 heavy machines have been dispatched to repair National Highway No. 212, the paper reported. Train services in the area have also been suspended.

Rescue efforts are expected to be hampered by heavy rain that's soaked the region in recent weeks. More rain is forecast and experts have warned about potential landslides.

According to the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau, the quake registered a magnitude of 6.6, however the U.S. Geological Survey said it was a 5.9-magnitude tremor, which struck at the relatively shallow depth of about half a mile (1 kilometer).

The epicenter was eight miles (13 kilometers) east of Chabu and 110 miles (177 kilometers) south-southeast of Lanzhou, the USGS said.

Tremors were still being felt from the quake, Xinhua said, quoting sources within the Min County government. Locals said buildings and trees shook for about a minute.

Earthquake With Magnitude 8.0 Strikes off Coast of Alaska

A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska today, prompting officials to issue a tsunami warning for the state's coastal regions.

The quake, which shook an area about 15 miles from Little Sitkin Island, was initially deemed a 7.1 on the Richter scale before it was upgraded to an 8.0.

In a tsunami warning, officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association warned people in the state's coastal areas to be aware that "the first wave may not be the largest."

The warning said "widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible and may continue for many hours," even after a tsunami has reached land.

Nearly 370 dead in China earthquake
By Kevin Wang, CNN

updated 4:49 PM EDT, Sun August 3, 2014

(CNN) -- The death toll has risen to 367 and 1,600 people were injured after a strong earthquake hit China's Yunnan province on Sunday, state-run television reported.

The area is a mountainous region, known for its natural scenery and ethnic diversity, but it's also prone to natural disasters.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1. The China Earthquake Networks Center called it a 6.5.

Some 12,000 homes were destroyed and 30,000 others were damaged, according to CCTV.

Video of the site by CCTV shows rescue workers digging with their hands under several feet of rubble that included dirt, rebar and concrete blocks.

Video shows the injured adults and children being rushed to hospitals in ambulances.

Power and telephone outages were complicating assessment of the damage, rescuers said.

The quake was centered about 11 kilometers (almost 7 miles) west-northwest of the town of Wenping, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
