Small Quake Rolls Through South Bay

Posted: 10:21 am PST January 7, 2010Updated: 10:39 am PST January 7, 2010
MILPITAS -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 rolled through the South Bay Thursday morning, jittering nerves but causing little or no damage, officials said.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 10:13 a.m. about six miles east of Milpitas in an area near where the Calaveras and Hayward faults meet.

Local residents reported that the quake had a rolling motion and it was felt as far north as San Francisco. Authorities did not have any immediate reports of damage.

A small quake was also felt in the region late Wednesday night. The USGS reported that quake had a magnitude of 2.8.

According to the USGS, the earthquake struck shortly after 11 p.m. and had a depth of 5.1 miles.

The quake was centered about 8 miles southeast of Milpitas and 9 miles east-northeast of San Jose City Hall, according to the USGS.

Post Re: CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKES
So. Calif. Quake 4.1 Jolts San Fran.

January 8, 2010
By Lisa M. Krieger, Mark Gomez and Jeanine Benca
San Jose Mercury News

The jolt-and-roll felt 'round the Bay Area on Thursday morning gave plenty of people the creeps, but scientists say the magnitude 4.1 quake was a routine geologic nerve-jangler in an area notorious for seismic action.

A locked-up patch of rocks deep underground near the Calaveras Reservoir suddenly broke loose at 10:09 a.m. in the remote, oak-studded hills about six miles east of Milpitas and 11 miles from San Jose City Hall, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no reports of damage, and the 85-year-old earthen dam at the reservoir — already due for a $409 million upgrade — endured the shaking without a problem.

"Usually you just hear a ripple of the roof," said park ranger Neil Spargur from the nearby Sunol Regional Wilderness park. "This one we felt in the entire building."

Thursday's quake was the latest in a steady series of jolts triggered by the restless Calaveras Fault, stressed by the earth's shifting continental plates, according to USGS seismologist David Oppenheimer.

"In the big picture, it doesn't mean anything," he said. "It's just part of the natural background process" along this agitated section of the fault, which routinely releases stress.

A magnitude 3.0 quake was recorded nearby on Wednesday night at 11:09 p.m. About two years ago, a stretch of the same fault under Alum Rock Park triggered a much larger and more damaging 5.4 quake. In 1984, a 6.2 rupture near Mount Hamilton, with major aftershocks in Morgan Hill, caused damage that totaled more than $10 million.

"There's a sense that things are working north. That seems to be the MO," said Jack Boatwright, the USGS's chief of earthquake effects investigations in Northern California.

This region, near the intersection with the Hayward Fault, is a place of ongoing and often imperceptible earthen creeping, as evidenced by routinely broken sidewalks in Hayward and Fremont. But sometimes small sections of rocks get stuck, then trigger an earthquake when they suddenly give way.

"Without earthquakes," Oppenheimer added, "we'd look like Kansas."

The temblor was felt in San Francisco, throughout the South Bay and in the East Bay from Pleasanton to at least as far north as Walnut Creek and Richmond.

Of USGS Web site visitors reporting that they felt the quake, most were from the Milpitas, Fremont, Pleasanton and Livermore areas.

"The mirror on my dresser was going back and forth and it rumbled," said Marilyn Holliday who was at home in the Mission Valley area of Fremont when the quake hit.

Miles away, in the hills above Redwood City, Laverne Rabinowitz felt a "sharp, short jolt. It felt like the house shook or rolled south-to-north."

"We were shocked to hear it was that far away from us," said Kacie Young, an engineer at work in downtown San Francisco, "yet we felt it pretty hard."

The old dam at Calaveras Reservoir, safe from minor earthquakes because it holds only low levels of water, soon will be replaced because the state deemed it unsafe in major earthquakes. If it collapsed, it could send a 30-foot-high wall of water into Fremont and toward Interstate 880, studies show. Construction of a replacement dam will start in 2011 and be completed in 2015. The last magnitude 4 quake in the South Bay was March 30, 2009, when a 4.3 temblor struck just south of San Jose.

Earthquake scientists are far more worried about the potential violence of a more northern stretch of the Calaveras Fault, between the towns of Danville and San Ramon.

"That's a bigger section, with no creep" to release stress, Oppenheimer said. "It's completely stuck."

WASHINGTON - A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of northern California on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was offshore 22 miles west-northwest of Ferndale, Calif., at a depth of 10.2 miles, the USGS said.

Police in Ferndale told NBC News that there were reports of gas leaks and items falling but no reports of building collapses.

Police in Eureka and Fortuna said damage was still being assessed.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami watch or warning in effect.

USGS geophysicist Richard Buckmaster said the quake was felt as far south as Capitola in central California, and as far north as Tiller in central Oregon.

The San Francisco Bay area was struck by two light earthquakes on Thursday and Friday.

Ferndale, a town of about 1,400 people, is 265 miles north of San Francisco and 12 miles south of Eureka, Calif.

Quote:
FRESNO, Calif – A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California Saturday afternoon, shaking buildings south of the Oregon border and knocking out power in several coastal communities.

The powerful quake hit at about 4:27 p.m. PST about 22 miles from Ferndale, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Authorities in the nearby city of Eureka and other area communities said no major injuries have been reported. But several people received minor cuts and scrapes from broken glass at the Bayshore Mall in Eureka, fire spokesman Gary Bird said.

"There are some frayed nerves, but I think we've come through this pretty well for the magnitude of earthquake we've had," he said.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman J.D. Guidi said power outages were widespread across most of Humboldt County, affecting about 25,000 customers.

Several traffic lights fell and numerous residents reported water, gas and sewer leaks, Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services spokeswoman Jo Wattle said.

"People have chimneys down, and we're hearing about minor property damage and lots of glassware broken," Wattle said. "People are really shaken up. It was shaking pretty good, then it had a big jolt to it at the end."

According to the USGS, the quake hit at a depth of nearly 10 miles. Eight aftershocks followed in the three hours after the quake, the biggest registering at 6:21 p.m. PST at a magnitude of 4.5.

Police in Ferndale said the earthquake caused stucco to fall off City Hall and broke shop windows, strewing the historic downtown streets with glass shards.

"I thought a tire had blown off my truck because it was so hard to keep control of the vehicle," Officer Lindsey Frank said. "Power lines were swaying, and I could see people in the fields trying to keep their balance."

Televisions tumbled and objects were knocked off walls in Arcata, a small town that's home to Humboldt State University, one resident said.

"The whole town is kind of freaked out right now," said Judd Starks, the kitchen manager at a bar and restaurant known as The Alibi. "All the power is out, people are out walking around."

The quake was felt as far south as Capitola in central California, and as far north as central Oregon, USGS geophysicist Richard Buckmaster said.

The area is about 270 miles north of San Francisco in a coastal area known for periodic earthquakes. In 1964 a tsunami washed away 11 people in Crescent City, 80 miles to the north of Arcata. It is the only tsunami to take lives in the continental United States.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there was no threat of the quake generating a tsunami.

There is a small chance — 5 to 10 percent — of another magnitude-6.5 temblor or larger hitting the area over the next week, but the odds dramatically decrease as time passes, the USGS said.

There's also a 78 percent chance of a strong and potentially damaging aftershock magnitude-5 or larger over the same period. The earthquake probabilities are based on statistical observations of past earthquakes in California and are not predictions, the USGS said.

Jack Coles - 01 - 10 - 2010 Forecast - **3 FORECASTS
« on: January 10, 2010, 01:51:02 PM »

Just spoke with Jack. His signal was off on the direction re Eastern California, although that forecast for Eastern California/Nevada/Idaho is still in effect. Jack will be recalibrating instrumentation.

He is VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE PATTERN THAT IS OCCURRING.

This is the secondary window for this month using Jim Berkland's forecast. He has been conferring with Jim regarding the formula Jim uses.

The current California quakes hit at 36% probability. They are not acting llike main events, but more like foreshocks.

Jack is looking at date window of 14th/15th - 24th, January 2010 with a 44% chance (because of those quakes) of a quake 1 to 1 1/2 times larger. He is receiving small to moderate signals for a quake up/down the California coast. He is watching January 11th for further Main Signals.

TO SUMMARIZE:

1. THERE IS A 36%+ PROBABLILITY FOR A LARGER QUAKE TO OCCUR OFF-DATE.

2. THE CURRENT QUAKES ARE ACTING LIKE FORESHOCKS, NOT MAIN EVENTS.

3. STILL WATCHING THE DATES OF JANUARY 14TH AND 15TH (NEW MOON) FOR A QUAKE 1 TO 1 1/2 TIMES GREATER THAN THE OFFSHORE EUREKA QUAKE. POSSIBLE DATES ALSO: JANUARY 13TH, 18TH, 25TH & 26TH, 2010.
