Massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Chile early this morning, killing at least 78 and prompting tsunami warnings in areas as far away as the western coast of the United States.
Tremor scared thousands, collapsed buildings and sparked tsunami warnings.

The earthquake, which hit just after 3 a.m. local time, was 64 times stronger than the one that devestated Haiti last month but was much deeper, likely making the number of casualities far fewer than those in the Caribbean nation.

The minute-and-a-half-long quake was less than 100 miles north from the southwest coastal city of Concepcion, the second-largest city in Chile, but caused damage as far away as the capital Santiago nearly 200 miles away.

Hospitals in the area have been evacuated and the airport in Santiago has been shut down as the country braces to cope with at least 13 aftershocks measuring 5.0 magnitude or stronger. Phone lines and power also are out of service.

Carol Urban, an official at the U.S. Embassy in Santiago who has been stationed there for three years, described the earthquake as "long and scary."

"But Chile is in a seismic zone, so the Chileans as well as the Americans at the Embassy are always somewhat prepared but this was certainly a surprise to us," she said.

Urban said that the U.S. Embassy is reaching out to any American residents or tourist to make sure they are accounted for. No American casualties have been reported so far.

In Hawaii, officials are warning residents about the possibility of a Tsunami, with the first waves scheduled to arrive at 11:19 a.m. local time.

For the first time in 16 years, Hawaii will sound evacuation sirens indicating the possibility of danger to those in the coastal regions.

40 m (131 foot) waves hits Juan Fernandez Island (1) ilgiornale report that:

High waves 40 meters at present, the only abnormal event has occurred in the archipelago of islands of Juan Fernandez, but in this case - said the president - no one can speak of tsunami itself. In fact, it seems that in 'archipelago have not felt earthquakes but the tidal wave has developed all along the coasts and not only from the side of the epicenter. Una fregata della Marina militare cilena è salpata alla volta dell'isola di Robinson Crusoe, l'unica abitata dell'arcipelago, per trasportare viveri ed altri aiuti. Now Easter Island is evacuated: (1)

Quote:
Michelle Bachelet, the Chilean President, said an evacuation of coastal areas on Easter Island, the Chilean territory famous for its monumental statues, was underway as the tsunami was expected to make landfall there imminently. She also confirmed 78 people had been killed on the Chilean mainland.

British experts said a tsunami was now radiating from the epicentre towards Hawaii and other settlements on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The extent of the tsunami's ferocity is not yet known, but it has already reached the southern Juan Fernandez Islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile, where it was reported to have caused "serious damage".

A video from Chile:

News story

Chile earthquake 2010 & Terremoto en Chile 2010:

largest earthquake ever recorded was also in Chile
27 February, 2010

Chile earthquake 2010 & Terremoto en Chile 2010: largest earthquake ever recorded was also in Chile. In one of the worst earthquakes to have hit the South American nation of Chile, more than hundred people have been pronounced dead so far with Chilean President calling the tragedy as the catastrophe.

An 8.8 magnitude is among the most powerful earthquakes to have the hit the world in recent past. Far less powerful earthquakes in the past have killed many more people and destroyed entire regions.

But the worst earthquake in the history also took place in Chile in sixties of the last century when an earthquake of around 9.6 magnitude struck the nation killing around 1600 people.

In the meantime telephone contacts have still not been established with the city of Concepcion, the main centre of the earthquake.

European Union has been the first block to offer assistance of whatever kind is required.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced here Saturday a "state of catastrophe" in the central areas of her country following a massive earthquake of 8.8 magnitude on the Richter scale that hit the country.

President Bachelet held a meeting with her top aides on the earthquake after being informed that the body count rose up to 47 following a preliminary estimate of 6 that she made earlier, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported.

Further, president Bachelet appealed for her people to keep calm and contact the local authorities when it is necessary, saying "our country was afflicted with a big earthquake, we are engrossed in detecting the consequences of such earthquake, the road and hospital conditions, the damage done to the buildings, and of course the number of casualties." Chile was hit by a devastating earthquake of 9.5 magnitude in 1960, Killing 1655 people in southern Phaldivia city and bringing brought about a Tsunami that hit Easter island, 3700 k.m off the Chilean coast as well as affecting Hawai islands, Japan and the Philippines.

Bachelet said that "a tsunami" hit the archipelago of Juan Fernadiz in the pacific ocean and advised residents of the coasts to head for the high grounds in the event of aftershocks, warning citizens of the consequences of using the external roads as many of them were damaged due to the collapse of bridges.

The state television said that a conflagration broke out in Kolina city, 20 k.m. away from the north of the capital city, though it was put down. Further, the authorities had to evacuate a number of hospitals in some areas including Santiago after being severely damaged.

http://www.khabrein.info/news/Chile_ear ... 267284255/

So far over 33 aftershocks have been recorded.

Post Aftershocks Jolt Chile as Troops Seek to Keep Order
LIMA, Peru — As Chile grappled with a rising death toll and more reports of looting, three aftershocks struck Monday morning, complicating rescue efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated much of the country on Saturday.

Chilean officials said Monday that the death toll had reached 711 and was likely to rise. President Michelle Bachelet on Sunday issued an order that will send some 10,000 soldiers into the streets in the worst-affected areas to both keep order and speed the distribution of aid.

She called the magnitude-8.8 earthquake “an emergency unparalleled in the history of Chile.”

But residents of the hardest-hit parts of the country complained on Chilean radio that government provisions had been slow to arrive and said that almost all markets and stores had been stripped bare of food, water and other supplies. There were scattered reports of burglaries at abandoned homes in the earthquake zone. The United Nations said Monday that Chile had made an emergency request for mobile bridges, generators, water filtration equipment, field hospitals and surgical centers to cope with the toll from the quake.

“Everything is now moving,” said Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “We are looking immediately to match the needs. We need to see what we have in our stock to respond to this request.”

In the devastated southern city of Concepción, 55 people were arrested for violating an emergency curfew, Chile’s deputy secretary of the interior told La Tercera newspaper. Otherwise, he said, the city had been quiet overnight.

A day earlier in Concepción, the police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse hundreds of people who forced their way into shuttered shops . But law enforcement authorities, heeding the cries of residents that they lacked food and water, eventually settled on a system that allowed staples to be taken but not televisions and other electronic goods. Ms. Bachelet announced that the government had reached a deal with supermarket chains to give away food to needy residents. Her aides also called on residents not to hoard gas or food, both of which were being bought up in huge amounts by residents fearful of shortages.

Using power saws and their bare hands, rescue workers atop the rubble of collapsed buildings tried to pull out those caught inside. Although there were successes — like Julio Beliz, who managed to free his neighbor from the rubble in Santiago, the capital, after hearing him yell out, “Julio, help me!” — the search for survivors was frustratingly slow.

“It’s very slow, dangerous work, because on top of it all, it’s still shaking there,” said Victoria Viteri, a spokeswoman with the national emergency office in Santiago, referring to rescue efforts in the country’s hardest-hit areas.

The earthquake, one of the strongest in recorded history, left a devastating footprint on a country that knows quakes well.

Residents of a collapsed 15-story apartment building in Concepción, opened just months ago, were outraged that it had been so badly damaged and were convinced that contractors had not complied with building codes that require buildings to be able to withstand temblors. Already, there was talk among residents of taking builders to court once the emergency is over.

In Cobquecura, 50 miles north of Concepción, state television showed collapsed bridges, crashed buses and sunken pavement. Residents had fled to the hills, prompting local journalists to declare it a virtual ghost town.

In remote coastal towns, waves had obliterated homes, and boats were found on land next to overturned cars. The authorities acknowledged that the damage was spread over such a vast area that they were just beginning to get a grasp on it.

Early Sunday, a 6.1-magnitude aftershock, one of more than 100 that have followed the original quake, sent residents scrambling again for cover. With the earth still unsettled, many Chileans have opted to camp outside.

The first of the three temblors on Monday occurred at 3:24 a.m., with a magnitude of 4.8, according to seismologists at the United States Geological Survey who placed the epicenter 105 miles south of the city of Valparaíiso.

Within the next 90 minutes, two more shocks hit the Maule region, south of Santiago. The first registered 4.9, and the second, with an epicenter offshore, was recorded at 5.3.

In Maipú, outside Santiago, the authorities inspected an apartment building, found it relatively stable and allowed residents half an hour each to hustle inside and remove any personal belongings, local media reported. At another building nearby, however, the damages were considered too severe and the city told residents to stay out.

The National Office of Emergency raised the number of displaced people on Sunday to two million.

Among the quake’s victims were Lurde Margarita Arias Dias, 24, and her infant child, Peruvian immigrants who were crushed as a wall toppled in their Santiago home.

“I tried to save them,” Adán Noé Saavedra Ríos, Lurde’s husband, told local reporters with tears in his eyes. He described his frantic wife trying to rush from the house with their daughter in her arms after the ground started moving. Before he knew it, he recounted, they were covered in rubble.

At the hospital in Talca, near the epicenter, personnel were treating victims in the parking lot because the hospital building was considered structurally unsound. Other hospitals were also damaged, and Ms. Bachelet said the military would set up field hospitals to treat the injured.

Speaking at a midday news conference, Ms. Bachelet called on power companies to work quickly to repair their networks so that services could be restored and the country could begin to get back on its feet. “We need energy first,” she said, pointing out that cellphone communications, medical care and water distribution depended on it.

Ms. Bachelet said that the bulk of the known deaths, 541 of 708, took place in the Maule region, which is the country’s leading wine-growing area along the coast, followed by Bío-Bío, where at least 64 people died. The military will take charge of emergency operations in those two areas for the next month, she said.

The government has imposed a limited curfew in those areas that forbids people from wandering the streets at night, but will not force them inside damaged buildings. Many people huddled by fires and slept outside Saturday night out of fear that more buildings would collapse.

Responding to outbreaks of looting in Concepción, the mayor, Jacqueline van Rysselberghe, had earlier called on national officials to bring in the military to keep the tense situation from spinning out of control. She said it was not just desperate people who were cleaning out the stores but opportunists who were trying to enrich themselves.

Despite images of confrontation between the police and residents, officials said that the traumatized country remained mostly calm. Ms. Bachelet’s order will mean 10,000 soldiers will help in the relief effort, Defense Minister Francisco Vidal said.

The scenes of toppled buildings, overturned cars and bodies being hauled from rubble resembled those from Haiti a month and a half ago. But because of better building standards and because the epicenter was farther from populated areas, the scale of the damage from Chile’s significantly more powerful earthquake was nowhere near that suffered in Haiti, where more than 200,000 people are believed to have died.

The comparison with Haiti did little to soothe the suffering of Chileans, some of whom tearfully recounted how their children were crying for food and how their families were now living outside in the elements.

Still, many felt lucky to have survived.

“It was like God said, ‘No, run out the back,’ “ said Carmen Peña, 48, a grandmother whose home in Santiago was in shambles. “If we’d gone out the front, we’d be dead.”

The quake hit during Chile’s summer vacation, which left thousands of Chileans stranded overseas. There were frantic scenes at airports throughout the region as the closing of the damaged Santiago airport prompted airlines to cancel or reroute flights away from the Chilean capital.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who had a previously scheduled visit to Chile this week as part of a tour of Latin America, will go ahead with the stop despite the quake. Mrs. Clinton is scheduled to meet with both Ms. Bachelet, who leaves office this month, and her successor, President-elect Sebastián Piñera.

Chile quake may have tipped Earth's axis :hmm

(CNN) -- The massive earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted the Earth's axis and created shorter days, scientists at NASA say.

The change is negligible, but permanent: Each day should be 1.26 microseconds shorter, according to preliminary calculations. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.

A large quake shifts massive amounts of rock and alters the distribution of mass on the planet.

When that distribution changes, it changes the rate at which the planet rotates. And the rotation rate determines the length of a day.

"Any worldly event that involves the movement of mass affects the Earth's rotation," Benjamin Fong Chao, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said while explaining the phenomenon in 2005.

Scientists use the analogy of a skater. When he pulls in his arms, he spins faster.

That's because pulling in his arms changes the distribution of the skater's mass and therefore the speed of his rotation.

Richard Gross, a geophysicist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, used a computer model to determine how the magnitude 8.8 quake that struck Chile on February 27 may have affected the Earth.

He determined that the quake should have moved the Earth's figure axis about 3 inches (8 centimeters). The figure axis is one around which the Earth's mass is balanced. That shift in axis is what may have shortened days.

Such changes aren't unheard of.

The magnitude 9.1 earthquake in 2004 that generated a killer tsunami in the Indian Ocean shortened the length of days by 6.8 microseconds.

On the other hand, the length of a day also can increase. For example, if the Three Gorges reservoir in China were filled, it would hold 10 trillion gallons (40 cubic kilometers) of water. The shift of mass would lengthen days by 0.06 microsecond, scientists said. :hmm

The lawlessness on Conception chile: (1)

Quote:
Authorities in Chile's second-most populous city have extended a curfew in an effort to curb the looting following Saturday's deadly earthquake.

The lawlessness that has plagued Concepcion since the city was badly damaged by the quake prompted officials to extend a curfew from 8 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday.

The looting continued from late Monday night into the early morning hours of Tuesday, as desperate residents seek basic supplies such as food and water. Several stores and businesses have been ransacked and burned.

Chilean authorities are struggling to maintain order, distribute supplies, and rescue survivors after Saturday's powerful earthquake that killed more than 720 people and damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings. President Michelle Bachelet is attempting to rally her nation in the face of tragedy and devastation, while appealing to the international community for assistance.

Shock and grief have given way to desperation and lawlessness in some areas hardest-hit by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake. Many looters made off with food and basic supplies. Others saw an opportunity for large-scale theft, carrying away home appliances on their backs.

Authorities declared a nighttime curfew in several municipalities, and President Bachelet sent thousands of additional security forces to restore order.

There's been a very lively discussion over at Democratic Underground (among others) over what constitutes "looting" and "lawlessness" in the aftermath of a catastrophe.

Is it looting to go into a damaged supermarket and get badly needed supplies for your family?

Is it looting to obtain diapers from said store?

Is it looting to help yourself to 12 cases of water and then sell said water to your neighbors?

Is it looting if you get a mattress from a damaged store so your family doesn't have to sleep on the ground?

Is it looting to help yourself to a 52 inch color tv or DVD player?

Is it looting if you sell said TV/DVD player and use the money for a bus ticket to get your family out of a catastrophe and somewhere safe?

Is it lawlessness to set up patrols in your neighborhood because there is no police presence?

Is it lawlessness to block off streets and ask folks what they are doing there?

Sounds a lot like New Orleans, doesn't it?

I can tell you from personal experience how scary the initial few days are after a natural disaster. We put folks on the rooftops after Ike and changed folks at 4 hour intervals. We also had plans to block off streets in our neighborhood at the very first sign of trouble.

Luckily, the Harris County Sheriff's office posted patrols through the neighborhood all night long - nearly every hour. :heart

How do I know? 'Cause I didn't get much sleep that first night - sleeping outside on my porch with no fences! :noway

Yes, in the epicenter of the Quake,

but in Santiago City, that was little affected, with all the servicies working, the same rutine: Looting, Burning the Supermarkts and Drug Stores...

so they point to a 18 hours curfew... IMHO Hillary (1) gave this recipe to Michelle ...a derivate of a Marshal law..for a Chilean Testing Scenary :whistle

Quote:
An 18-hour curfew remains in place in Concepcion, the country's second largest city, and military personnel are on patrol to make sure food and water are distributed properly.

Concepcion was the city closest to the epicenter of the earthquake. Some residents are taking steps to ensure their own security, setting up roadblocks to keep track of everyone entering their neighborhoods.

Military helicopters carrying relief supplies landed Tuesday in the coastal town of Constitucion. Authorities also set up a makeshift morgue in a gymnasium, where bodies lay on the floor for identification and the names of the dead were posted outside. At least 250 people are believed missing in Constitucion.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has said looting and lawlessness will not be tolerated. She has instructed troops to act with what she called the "severity" necessary to prevent crime.

Ms. Bachelet said more than 2 million buildings, including 500,000 homes, were damaged in the quake and that it is impossible to know at this time what can be rebuilt.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was in Chile Tuesday, said the U.S. is ready to help any way it can. Clinton brought 25 satellite phones with her as an initial U.S. contribution.

Interesting videos! Thanks, recall!

Yep, I have to agree with you. Looting is looting whether it is done in desperation, self preservation or simply because you can!

Strong Aftershock Hits Chile

SANTIAGO—The U.S. Geological Survey said a preliminary 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Chile's south-central region Wednesday, a powerful aftershock following the massive 8.8-magnitude quake that rattled the Andean nation early Saturday.

Chile's National Emergency Office, known as Onemi, said no tsunami alert was being issued.

But in the coastal town of Constitucion, which was leveled by a tsunami after Saturday's quake, a tsunami alert was sounded, according to a local radio broadcast from Concepcion, the regional capital of Bio Bio.

This maybe should go in the rumors thread but I'm putting it here for now.

It is from GLP - yeah, woo woo I know. But there is some truth to what this poster has to say.

Thoughts?

just quit my job at NASA... I have some really bad news
Quote

The moon is loosing orbital velocity and is going to strike the Earth. That's the simplest way I can explain this. We have an estimated 21 months left.

There will most likely not be an announcement until May 2012.

By then is will be apparent to most that something is not right. LD is starting to shrink but it's going to take months to be apparent to civilians.

In November of 05' a small but very dense object struck the moon at a perpendicular angle to the center of the Earth. This object was believed to be a solid iron asteroid. Our only indicator of this event was a superbolide flash that occurred as the asteroid struck.

In January of 06' Earth observatories began to notice that the mirrors left on the moon by Apollo, were off a tiny bit, but the scariest part was the fact that the ping time for the Earth Based Ranging Lasers was decreasing.

Recently, NASA has been using Earth Based Lasers to search for Russian Mirrors that was supposedly left by Russian probes but as of today were unable to find them.

Also, the Indian Chandrayaan-1 was originally built to look for water on the moon, and it did... BUT it was re purposed before launch to do additional studies relating to the asteroid strike on the moon.

There is great thought that the additional (though slight) gravitational pull in the Earth- moon system may be responsible for the increase in violent tides and earthquake activity.

There isn't much more to say. I believe many in the upper echelon know about this. The shuttle is being scrubbed, I believe there may be an effort to try and either de-orbit the moon or to try and re-stabilize the orbit. Any mission to do so would be nearly impossible and require VERY dense impactors that only several Saturn type rockets could get into orbit.

I am/was not in the field to know details about future plans, but we talk and there are always rumors.

As for myself, I have quit my job and am going to wait to tell my family. My wife is besides herself and thinks I need "mental help"... if she only knew what I know.

Please know that all of you are in my thoughts. I hope, no I pray, you make the most of your time left on Earth.

There's about 60+ pages of folks spamming and raising BS flags BUT - check this snipped out:

An Explosion on the Moon

12.23.2005

December 23, 2005: NASA scientists have observed an explosion on the moon. The blast, equal in energy to about 70 kg of TNT, occurred near the edge of Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Rains) on Nov. 7, 2005, when a 12-centimeter-wide meteoroid slammed into the ground traveling 27 km/s.

"What a surprise," says Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) researcher Rob Suggs, who recorded the impact's flash. He and colleague Wes Swift were testing a new telescope and video camera they assembled to monitor the moon for meteor strikes. On their first night out, "we caught one," says Suggs.

The object that hit the moon was "probably a Taurid," says MSFC meteor expert Bill Cooke. In other words, it was part of the same meteor shower that peppered Earth with fireballs in late October and early November 2005. (See "Fireball Sightings" from Science@NASA.)

The moon was peppered, too, but unlike Earth, the moon has no atmosphere to intercept meteoroids and turn them into harmless streaks of light. On the moon, meteoroids hit the ground--and explode.

"The flash we saw," says Suggs, "was about as bright as a 7th magnitude star." That's two and a half times dimmer than the faintest star a person can see with their unaided eye, but it was an easy catch for the group's 10-inch telescope.

Cooke estimates that the impact gouged a crater in the moon's surface "about 3 meters wide and 0.4 meters deep." As moon craters go, that's small. "Even the Hubble Space Telescope couldn't see it," notes Cooke. The moon is 384,400 km away. At that distance, the smallest things Hubble can distinguish are about 60 meters wide.

This isn't the first time meteoroids have been seen hitting the moon. During the Leonid meteor storms of 1999 and 2001, amateur and professional astronomers witnessed at least half-a-dozen flashes ranging in brightness from 7th to 3rd magnitude. Many of the explosions were photographed simultaneously by widely separated observers.

Apollo special: Mirrors on the moon

EACH clear night when the moon is high in the sky, a group of astronomers in New Mexico take aim at our celestial neighbour and blast it repeatedly with pulses of light from a powerful laser. They target suitcase-sized reflectors left on the lunar surface by the Apollo 11, 14 and 15 missions, as well as by two Russian landers.

Out of every 300 quadrillion (1015) photons that are sent to the moon, about five find their way back. The rest are lost to our atmosphere, or miss the lunar reflectors altogether.

From this small catch, the team can assess the movement of the moon to an accuracy of a millimetre or two - a measurement so precise that it has the potential to show up any cracks in Einstein's general theory of relativity. If that's what it does, this lunar laser-ranging experiment will become Apollo's greatest scientific legacy.

Dont Worry Blue :alien ;)

The Moon and Planet Earth are just Reacting since 2003 to the Presence of a High Magnetic Object that is by now in front of the Sun...
(NASA can Deny Longer that The moon is Over-reacting), cause this particular object is coming near, and near to Earth- Moon System, But the Gravity Pull of Earth is Enough to mantain the moon in orbit...(but not in the same orbit)...
but the orbit of the moon will be more excentric!

Why?
The moon is also exceptional in that it is quite massive compared to the earth itself, the ratio of their masses being far larger than the similar ratios of other natural satellites to the planets they orbit (though that of Charon and the dwarf planet Pluto exceeds that of the moon and earth). For this reason, the earth-moon system is sometimes considered a double planet. It is the center of the earth-moon system, rather than the center of the earth itself, that describes an elliptical orbit around the sun in accordance with Kepler's laws. It is also more accurate to say that the earth and moon together revolve about their common center of mass, rather than saying that the moon revolves about the earth. This common center of mass lies beneath the earth's surface, about 3,000 mi (4800 km) from the earth's center. and i Called Barycenter of the System (1)

Quote:
the moon does not orbit the exact center of the Earth, but a point on a line between the Earth and the Moon approximately 1,710 km below the surface of the Earth, where their respective masses balance. This is the point about which the Earth and Moon orbit as they travel around the Sun.

Image

Any Alteration in the Magnetic Nucleus of Earth will alter this balance ie: distance between the two, so the moon will be closer or far from the normal distance... and off of the nominal 5 deg of inclinations...
That is what really these NASA people are reporting...They want to measure it! in real time...

Why ?

There is a direct relation between Rogue Waves, Unexpected High Tides and Quakes...
Image

and the 3 bodies interactions...

Wasn't there a TV movie on this seniero last fall?
It is a shame there is so much flak on that GLP, I would hope that anyone who posted it there would be an nut anyhow. There has to be some place else to post real information, if it where true.
But hey, who am I to judge??

I do have one thing, how come they are showing the two Suns on a cloudy day?? Why wouldn't they both show up on a clear day? Cause there isn't two. IMHO

Siam, the interaction between them is also noticed, and we got an indirect confirmation that these interactions causes noticiables anomalies:

1-Rogue Waves

2- Tidal Bores more higer...than usual

Thanks, recall! That makes more sense.

Now to the topic at hand:

Strong Aftershocks Strike Chile :huh
By GINGER THOMPSON

SANTIAGO, Chile — Two strong offshore tremors jolted the coastline of southern Chile on Friday morning striking close to the epicenter of the earthquake that devastated the country a week ago.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the quakes — the latest of scores of aftershocks to rattle Chile — each occurred within 25 miles of Concepción, Chile’s second-largest metropolitan area. Concepción was heavily damaged in the Saturday morning quake, which measured 8.8, and an even deadlier tsunami that followed it. According to the Geological Survey, the first tremor hit at 6:19 a.m. Friday, 25 miles northwest of Concepción, and had an estimated magnitude of 6.0. The second , stronger quake, with an estimated magnitude of 6.6, struck at 8:47 a.m., 20 miles north of the city. How are these aftershocks?

There were no immediate reports of further damage or casualties on Friday.

On Friday, the country’s president-elect, Sebastián Piñera, asked President Michelle Bachelet to prepare as quickly as possible a detailed report estimating the damages caused by the earthquake, describing the successes and failures of the government’s response and outlining the work left to be done. Mr. Piñera is set to take office next week.

Emergency management officials announced Thursday that they had significantly overestimated the death toll from the Saturday quake, lowering the figure from about 805 people to about 279. :hmm

Carmen Fernández, director of the emergency management agency, known as Onemi, said in an interview that in several badly damaged municipalities, officials had erroneously included names of people who were missing on lists of those who had been killed. :dunno

The total number of people who died in the earthquake could still change substantially over time. Many people are still missing, and not all of the dead have been identified.

The recalibration of the death toll from the earthquake early on Saturday morning was quickly overshadowed by another earthquake on Thursday afternoon; this one struck in a completely different part of the country, the copper regions in the north.

Ms. Fernández said initial reports indicated that the Thursday quake struck near the northern inland city of Calama and was felt as far away as Iquiqui, on the coast. She said there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious damages.
