Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- At least 103 people were killed and 150 others were missing after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra on Monday and triggered a tsunami, Indonesian officials said Tuesday. :candle

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake generated a "significant" tsunami.

Although communication with remote areas was difficult, some witnesses in West Sumatra reported seeing a wave 6 meters (nearly 20 feet) high. Other reports described the tsunami as being about 3 meters high.

One report said at least one village with a population of about 200 people was swept away, with only 40 people recovered

Crews struggle to reach victims as toll rises in Indonesia quake

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off Indonesia has risen to 154, officials said Wednesday.

Another 400 are missing from the quake that struck Monday and triggered a tsunami.

The numbers of dead and injured were in flux because information was trickling in from remote parts of Indonesia, a country made up of myriad islands.

"The worst hit area is north and south Pagai Island. Reports of villages flattened are coming from there," said Antorizon of the disaster management center in West Sumatra.

:headbang ... :gah ... :rant @#$#@

How much does Indonesia have to taKE? BF, cyclones, earthquakes, poverty, disease, and on and on. Isn't this one of the precursors that people have been watching for? I don't like it......

Indonesia struggles as tsunami, volcano tolls rise

(AP) – 15 hours ago

MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia (AP) — Helicopters with emergency supplies finally landed Wednesday on remote Indonesian islands slammed by a tsunami that killed more than 300 people, while elsewhere in the archipelago the toll from a volcanic eruption rose to 30, including the mountain's spiritual caretaker.

About 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the east in central Java, meanwhile, disaster officials were scouring the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano for survivors after it was rocked by an eruption Tuesday that killed at least 30 people, including an 83-year-old man who had refused to abandon his ceremonial post as caretaker of the mountain's spirits.

The first aerial surveys of the region hit by the 10-foot (three-meter) tsunami revealed huge swaths of land underwater and the crumbled rubble of homes torn apart by the wave......Tsunami disaster officials... were still trying to get to more than a dozen villages on the Mentawais ... but they were preparing for the worst Wednesday.

Officials say hundreds of wooden and bamboo homes were washed away in more than 20 villages, displacing more than 20,000 people. Many were seeking shelter in makeshift emergency camps or with family and friends.

Indonesia death toll reaches 300 with more feared after twin disasters

Emergency response to tsunami and earthquake stretched to limit as 500 remain unaccounted for on remote Mentawai islands.....

The damage to the area's basic infrastructure also became apparent. Buildings were wrecked, their walls and roofs buckled and broken, and trees were flattened by a wave which has been described as between 3 and 7 metres high and a kilometre wide. Hundreds of lightweight homes were washed away and aid workers reported villages razed to the ground as waves reached 600 metres inland.

Indonesia's Merapi volcano erupts again and threatens more

Rains dampened relief efforts around Indonesia’s Mt. Merapi, as it erupted for a third time Friday. The country’s most active volcano has been spewing hot ash and debris since Tuesday, killing at least 34 people and displacing around 50,000.

Friday morning’s blast was mostly hot clouds and smoke, but it signaled that the volcano’s wrath was not over. Surono, the head of Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency, says a lot of the pressure inside the volcano has been relieved by the blast but there's still cause for concern.

Orphaned baby found alive in storm drain after Indonesia tsunami :heart

MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia — Hospitals in Indonesia are struggling to cope with scores of injured survivors of a devastating tsunami, including a newly orphaned two-month-old baby found in a storm drain.

As the death toll rose to more than 400 — with in excess of 300 still missing — hospital staff appealed for doctors and medical help.

Bad weather and a shortage of boats were hampering efforts to get tons of food, water and blankets to the remote islands which were hardest hit by the giant wave.

The baby plucked from a storm drain was among dozens of injured survivors languishing in one sorely strapped hospital.

The child, its lungs filled with fluid and with cuts on its face, blinked sleepily in a humidified crib. :candle
