The largest earthquake recorded (during historic times) in Canada was a magnitude 8.1 event that struck just off the Haida Gwaii on Canada's west coast on August 22, 1949. This earthquake (larger than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake) ruptured a 500-km-long segment of the Queen Charlotte fault and was felt over almost all of British Columbia, and as far north as the Yukon Territory and as far south as Oregon State.

Although not recorded by seismographs, the largest earthquake ever to strike Canada was undoubtedly the giant megathrust (subduction zone) earthquake of 1700 off the west Coast of Vancouver Island.

Powerful earthquake hits B.C. northern coast VANCOUVER—A tsunami warning was issued last Saturday for the coastal areas of British Columbia following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the waters near Prince Rupert. People in coastal areas were told to move inland to higher ground while residents in low-lying coastal areas were ordered to be on alert for instructions from their local emergency officials after the tsunami warning was issued just before 8 p.m. local time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued the tsunami warning for coastal areas from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, 135 kilometres southeast of Sitka, Alaska. Late Saturday Natural Resources Canada issued a statement: “A major earthquake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region (formerly known as the Queen Charlottoe Islands). It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time.” The epicentre was reportedly about 40 kilometres south of Sandspit, B.C. at a depth of 19 kilometres in the coastal waters. Anyone know how often the west coast of Canada gets eartquakes, I do not recall any in recent history and this one is pretty big too
