Powerful earthquake hits B.C. northern coast

VANCOUVER—A tsunami warning was issued last Saturday for the coastal areas of British Columbia following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the waters near Prince Rupert.

People in coastal areas were told to move inland to higher ground while residents in low-lying coastal areas were ordered to be on alert for instructions from their local emergency officials after the tsunami warning was issued just before 8 p.m. local time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued the tsunami warning for coastal areas from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, 135 kilometres southeast of Sitka, Alaska.

Late Saturday Natural Resources Canada issued a statement: “A major earthquake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region (formerly known as the Queen Charlottoe Islands). It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time.”

The epicentre was reportedly about 40 kilometres south of Sandspit, B.C. at a depth of 19 kilometres in the coastal waters.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was the possibility of “widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents.”

The U.S. Geological Survey told the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii that “based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”

Puget Sound emergency crews to prepare for terrorist attack, earthquake
BY Alyssa Kleven on October 26, 2012 @ 12:38 pm (Updated: 1:52 pm - 10/26/12 )

How would our first responders react in the event of a major earthquake or a terrorist attack in the Puget Sound area?

Seattle Fire Department's Kyle Moore explained that when the worst of the worst strikes, it will depend on our local agencies working together to make sure we're all safe.

The federal government has decided that if there is a large scale disaster, from an earthquake or a terrorist attack, the response could take up to 72 hours.

Local departments are going to hold a terror drill Sunday in SoDo to prepare.

Hundreds of first responders will be on hand, according to Moore. "We're bringing in people from Pierce, King, and Snohomish counties."

Smaller-than-expected tsunami hits Hawaii after Canada earthquake

By NBC News staff and news wires

Updated at 10:45 a.m. ET: A tsunami warning prompted by a powerful earthquake off the Canadian coast spurred evacuations throughout Hawaii, but an evacuation order was canceled after a series of weaker-than-expected waves rolled through the islands. :heart

The warning was downgraded to a tsunami advisory, ending the threat of serious damage, the governor's office said early Sunday, though state civil defense authorities said beaches and harbors would remain closed for the time being and residents were urged to stay away from the water.

At least 100,000 people were ordered to move from the shoreline to higher ground late Saturday after the tsunami warning, but the first waves were less forceful than had been feared. There were no immediate reports of injuries, serious flooding or damage.

The tsunami began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Hawaii time (4:30 a.m. ET), according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, as motorists clogged roadways in a mass exodus from low-lying areas.

Where do earthquakes occur in Canada?

Earthquakes occur across much of Canada. Most earthquakes occur along the active plate boundaries off the British Columbia coast, and along the northern Cordillera (southwestern corner of the Yukon Territory and in the Richardson Mountains and Mackenzie Valley) and arctic margins (including Nunavut and northern Quebec). Earthquakes also occur frequently in the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Valleys, in New Brunswick, and the offshore region to the south of Newfoundland.
•The province in Canada least likely to experience an earthquake is Manitoba.
•The province in Canada most likely to experience an earthquake is British Columbia.

Do damaging earthquakes occur in Canada?

Yes! Some of the world's largest earthquakes have occurred here (see next question).

What is the largest earthquake ever recorded in Canada?

The largest earthquake recorded (during historic times) in Canada was a magnitude 8.1 event that struck just off the Haida Gwaii on Canada's west coast on August 22, 1949. This earthquake (larger than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake) ruptured a 500-km-long segment of the Queen Charlotte fault and was felt over almost all of British Columbia, and as far north as the Yukon Territory and as far south as Oregon State.

Although not recorded by seismographs, the largest earthquake ever to strike Canada was undoubtedly the giant megathrust (subduction zone) earthquake of 1700 off the west Coast of Vancouver Island.
