Volcano ALERT: REDOUBT VOLCANO, AK

Alaskan volcano Mount Redoubt continues to rumble, as it has throughout 2009, leaving citizens to wonder when the "big blow" might come. Mount Redoubt has been showing signs of increased activity, and scientists are taking extra steps to ensure their monitoring networks are upgraded and ready to provide data.

Geological experts said they expected the activity to continue for weeks or months back in March of this year, when it reportedly rumbled back to life after a long period of domancy. The last time the volcano was active was in 1989, when eruptions lasted 5 months. The alert level advisory for aviation was raised to yellow, in order to insure pilots didn't get caught up in any ash that might spew upwards.

Scientists had noted a series of small earthquakes occurring on the mountain, and now they are becoming more powerful but less frequent. Mount Redoubt is 10,197 feet tall, and the biggest fear observers have at this point is that a lava dome that formed in the middle of the volcano will erupt.
