Post Re: 2014 - Tropical Storm Arthur
Arthur May Bear Down on North Carolina as Hurricane

By Alex Sosnowski, Expert Senior Meteorologist

July 01, 2014; 10:37 AM

Tropical Storm Arthur has formed east of Florida Tuesday morning with further strengthening likely as the system turns northward this week while hugging the East Coast.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center projects the system could also become the season's first hurricane during the week of Independence Day as millions of people head to the beach for vacation.

Arthur is forecast to strengthen and drift northward into Thursday and then curve northeastward along the East Coast Friday into the weekend.

The system battled dry air and wind shear (disruptive winds) on Monday east of Florida and north of the Bahamas but began to overcome the obstacles to development Monday night into Tuesday.

Arthur may become 4th of July hurricane
By Ben Brumfield, CNN

updated 11:41 AM EDT, Wed July 2, 2014

(CNN) -- If you're planning on traveling over the Fourth of July to the East Coast, watch out for Arthur.

The first named tropical storm of the season may make driving hazardous on Wednesday and Thursday but should not spoil most of Friday's festivities, as it veers away from land.

Arthur looks like it will spare the colossal fireworks show on Washington's National Mall, weather forecasters say, whisking out of range.

The storm is expected to morph into a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday, farther south off the coast of North Carolina, with top wind speeds of 75 mph.

But it is predicted to track off to the east in time for Washington's show.

If predictions turn out to be off, the nation could get live television coverage of the season's first hurricane.

PBS is planning to broadcast the pyrotechnics blossoming over the Reflecting Pool live via 20 cameras.

North Carolina dodges bullet after Arthur cracks limbs, rattles homes, then leaves
By Ben Brumfield, CNN

updated 8:17 AM EDT, Fri July 4, 2014

CNN) -- North Carolina seems to have dodged a bullet.

Hurricane Arthur did not dawdle over the coastline to vandalize neighborhoods for long. The storm accelerated its rapid trek north, the National Weather Service said, and was leaving land behind as the sun rose.

Once again, it's churning over the Atlantic on a water-bound path parallel to New England's coast.

A line of rain clouds is sweeping east overland to meet the hurricane as it climbs, dumping rain all the way up to Maine on Friday, downing trees and knocking out power long before Arthur is to arrive.

As Arthur leaves the South's shores, hurricane watches and warnings are vanishing and resurrecting, as tropical storm warnings are posted farther north in anticipation of the storm's gradual demise around Nova Scotia.
