Re: Seed Sources
If I may add a point here:
- Cold storage of your seeds makes all the difference to their viability and germination later. Colder and drier is always better, so - yes - you can and should store your seeds tightly sealed in your freezer or at the bottom (coldest part) of your fridge, and seal them in a ziplock plastic to keep the package dry.
And you will need to rotate your "crop" every two or three years - just to be safe.
I now try to buy a few good heritage varieties to stash of "whatever" every spring planting season. I label each package by year. And toss the oldies when I get some fresh examples. I stuff the seed packs into a sealed jar, toss into the bottom drawer of my fridge.
-Be sure you are saving "heritage" i.e. not F1-Hybrid seeds. Remember that if you need the seeds, you will really, really need to save the next season's seeds from the crop that you grow this year. And hybrid seeds do not "breed true" from their own seed - the subsequent crop will be weak, disease-prone and scraggly. Not what you want. "Heritage" crops are tried-and-true proven, tough, productive and good under a variety of conditions. Most survival seed sellers provide heritage seeds, but check before buying.
Cheers,
Selene
