Canadian H1N1 vaccine approved Wednesday, October 21, 2009 | 10:40 AM CT - CBC News/AP - excerpts "Health Canada is poised to approve the H1N1 vaccine as early as Wednesday as Canadian tests of the vaccine against the swine flu virus get underway. Health Canada has approved the H1N1 vaccine for rollout across Canada, CBC News has learned. A formal announcement is expected at 12:30 p.m. ET. Canada has ordered 50 million doses from GlaxoSmithKline that are being produced at the company's Ste-Foy, Que., plant for what Dr. David Butler-Jones, Canada's chief public health officer, has described as "the largest immunization campaign in history. The federal government has already shipped more than two million doses of the H1N1 influenza A vaccine across the country in anticipation of the approval...The Canadian data will be valuable as immunization campaigns roll out, public health officials say. In about six weeks, the data will help inform regulators here whether some people may have to come back for a second shot to develop immunity. "We can make changes on the fly, because we're going to have our data coming back to us fairly quickly," Lasko said. "Secondly, H1N1, I think, is going to be around.
