H1N1 took a toll on the Canadian workforce in November, when 1.5 million people reported calling in sick as a result of the flu virus, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

On average, the workers lost 19.6 hours of work each, for a total of 29.5 million hours lost that month.

And that also meant a lot of overtime for the healthy. StatsCan said 600,000 people put in 8.6 million extra hours at work as a result of the H1N1 or seasonal flu.

Health workers were among those who reported the most overtime, with 10.5% putting in extra hours.

The net effect was a loss of 20.9 million work hours in November.

Canada and most of the world was hit by a pandemic H1N1 influenza virus last fall, along with seasonal influenza. The Public Health Agency of Canada commissioned Statistics Canada to assess the impact on hours worked.

The survey polled workers aged 15 to 69.

As is expected with these bugs, parents suffered more than those without children, as 12.4% of employees with kids lost work hours as a result of the flu, nearly twice the proportion of 6.9% among those without.

While there was no difference in the average number of hours lost between men and women, the 10.5% of women who reported work hours lost was somewhat higher than the proportion of 7.6% among men.

Provincially, flu-related absenteeism was highest among workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, where 14.2% of workers among those polled lost hours. The lowest rate was in Quebec (7.6%).
