Post Near Misses
I am going to list the eruption events logged in the press and by NASA that are termed notable, but missing the Earth, as a project to show the ramp up as we go into this current Solar Cycle.

I am of the opinion we are going to get the "opportunity?!?" to see not just M-class flares this cycle, but also X-class size. With SDO doing sterling science of capturing these events, and with so many satellites up there looking at the Sun, I think we are in for an eye popping show...

Anybody picking up an event I missed - please post it here as I feel this is going to be a classic record for the GT. I also trust we never have to report a DIRECT HIT!

Post Re: Near Misses
EARTH DODGES ANOTHER BULLET:

Just as sunspot 1105 was turning away from Earth on Sept. 8th, the active region erupted, producing a C3-class solar flare (peak @ 2330 UT) and a fantastic prominence. Here is a snapshot from the Solar Dynamics Observatory:

The eruption also hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) into space: SOHO movie. The expanding cloud is heading into a part of the solar system not currently occupied by any planet--it's going to miss everything, including Earth. If such a CME did hit Earth's magnetic field, it would probably trigger strong geomagnetic storms. Maybe next time...

"Maybe next time..." - ??!?!!? What sort of a comment is this from NASA????
