Yes, recall, most folks in the US don't realize how severely local governments can restrict civil liberties during an epidemic.

I am a child of the 50's and I remember the quarantine notice going up on our front porch due to measles and chickenpox. My poor Dad was unable to come home for 3 weeks because he had never had measles. My poor Mom nearly lost her mind because both my brother and I had mealses AND chickenpox, together. I remember the local health department coming by, a visiting nurse and the doctor visiting the house. I remember my Dad talking to my Mom from the front porch through the screen door.

It is sad that Mr. Duncan (the ebola patient in Dallas) was cremated immedately after his death. Of course, his family was not allowed to touch him, be with him or anything at the end. His possessions and all of the bedding, etc. from the hospital were trucked to another Texas city and incinerated.

We had long discussions about this same scenario on the bird flu forums back in the day.

I'm watching this and shaking my head in absolute amazement. After all the planning hospitals (at least in my area) did for SARS and bird flu and the response to ebola is THIS?

First off, I will bet you a dollar-to-a-donut that this poor man had no insurance. That's why he was treated and released.

Third, Dr. Sanjay Gupta showed on TV today the "personal protective gear" used at this hospital. Ya gotta be kidding me! We used better protection in a biohazard safety level 2 plant biotechnology lab than what I saw today.

Fourth, most community hospitals are not equipped to deal with something like ebola. This was made very, very, very clear in the Texas Medical Center during our meetings about bird flu and the Center's response.

I can't imagine what the hell these folks are thinking but I sincerely wish the best for this poor nurse and others exposed to her.

Actually, Simon, according to local news sources she was a laboratory supervisor at the hospital and "may" have handled specimens. She is 19 days out with no sign of infection.

Tomorrow, Mr. Duncan's family will be in the clear with no signs of infection.

The Ebola crazies are crawling out of the woodwork in my State and, yes, even in my own town. Friendswood ISD announced today that one of their teachers is in Tanzania and will self quarantine for 3 weeks after she returns home. Never mind the fact that Tanzania is 3100 miles from where Ebola is currently raging. So much for education in a deeply red state, huh?

Then our good Governor Hairspray took another opportunity today to take a shot at the Prez while wearing his glasses and trying to look Presidential. Yeah, he says we should stop all flights to Africa because that's how Ebola came to Texas. Never occured to the doofus that maybe folks in other states in the US feel the same way about flights from Texas.
