Vancouver patient oozes green blood

Doctors at Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital came across something highly illogical when they tried to put an arterial line into a patient about to undergo surgery: his blood was dark green.

The green blood — reminiscent of the Vulcan blood found in Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame — came as a bit of a shock to Dr. Alana Flexman and her colleagues, who report on the unusual case in this week's issue of the journal The Lancet.

The 42-year-old man was already a bit of a medical departure. He had fallen asleep while kneeling, and developed compartment syndrome in both legs.

The potentially dangerous condition involves a buildup of pressure in deep muscle tissue — in this case in the legs — and unless the pressure was relieved, permanent nerve damage could have been sustained.

As surgical staff prepared the man for the middle-of-the-night emergency operation, Flexman and a colleague attempted to insert a line into a wrist artery.

Arterial lines are used to monitor blood pressure during an operation; any blood that flows when the line is inserted into the artery should be vivid red, the sign it has been oxygenated.

But in this case, which occurred in October 2005, it was not.

"During insertion, we normally see arterial blood come out. That's how we know we're in the right place. And normally that blood is bright red, as you would expect in an artery," Flexman said in an interview Thursday.

"But in his case, the blood kept coming back as dark green instead of bright red.

"It was sort of a green-black. … Like an avocado skin maybe."

The reaction in the room? "We were very concerned, obviously," said Flexman, who is training in anesthesia at the hospital.
Medication drug may be green cause

Samples were rushed off to the lab, which quickly ruled out a dangerous condition called methemoglobin, in which the hemoglobin in the blood can't bind to oxygen.

While the lab worked, so did the operating team. The man came through the surgery well.

The next day, the lab reported it had detected sulfhemoglobin, a condition thought to be triggered by some medications.

"It's so rare that we don't have a perfect understanding how it happens, but some drug donates a sulphur group that binds to the hemoglobin molecule and prevents it from binding to oxygen," Flexman explains. "And that gives it the green colour."

She and her colleagues believe the condition may have been brought on by the man's migraine medication, sumatriptan, which he was taking in higher-than-advised doses, though they can't prove it.

Green blood can be found in some forms of life such as some marine worms. But it is a condition normally associated with science fiction and not medical texts.

Mr. Spock, the Enterprise's science officer in the famous TV series, was said to have the green blood of his father, who belonged to the race of pointy-eared, logic-seeking Vulcans.

According to Star Trek lore, however, Vulcans have green blood because the oxidizing agent in their blood is copper, and not iron.

THE ESCAPED ALIEN and THE GATE 3 INCIDENT
Some of you will have already read this report from Victor Martinez but for those of you who haven't here is the story. Also there have been rebuttals saying it isn't true. You can decide what you think about it. I find it interesting. - Aileen

This is the true story of the Gate 3 Incident.
DATE: This incident occurred in April 1983.

BACKGROUND: Gate 3 was a designation for an entrance into the Groom Lake Complex. This gate connected the Groom Lake complex with Area51. The gates surrounding the Groom Lake complex was [were] the responsibility of a private security company [Wackenhut Corp]. There was a mixture of private security and military security for the complex.

EVENT: The incident occurred when a "Visitor," [ExtraterrestrialEntity/ETE] being housed at Area 51, S-2 facility escaped. A massive search was started by military and private security forces. The Visitor was on foot and left the underground S-2 facility through an open vault door.

NARRATIVE: Part of the search team was the Director of Security for the Groom Lake complex and an agent from the Air Force Office of Special Investigation [AFOSI], who was the counter intelligence officer for the complex. Both were traveling in a jeep from the back gate of Groom Laketo the gate leading into Area 51, called Gate 3.

As the jeep approached Gate 3, the OSI agent noticed the guard was missing from the required location outside the gate house. As the jeep stopped, the OSI Agent got out of the jeep to investigate.

CRITICAL MASS: The OSI agent walked up to the gate to check on the guard. As the OSI agent got closer to the front door of the gate, the OSI agent noticed the interior of the gate was blood splattered. The OSI agent noticed only small pieces of human body parts were left of a human being. The OSI agent returned to the jeep and contacted the Central Security Control (main/primary security office for the complex) and reported the findings. The Director of Security contacted his office by way of a radio phone, mounted inside the jeep. The OSI agent, armed with only an automatic pistol, walked around the area searching for a perpetrator.

FLASHPOINT: The OSI agent located the "Visitor," lying down near an underground water culvert. The OSI agent challenged the Visitor, ordering the Visitor to give up. The Visitor walked away, followed bythe OSI agent. At some point, the OSI agent fired his weapon at the Visitor, as a warning. The Visitor, turned and pointed something at the OSI agent. The OSI agent fired directly at the Visitor, hitting the Visitor directly in the chest with two (2) rounds from the 45 caliber automatic pistol. The Visitor fell to the ground. It took about 18 minutes for additional security forces to arrive. The Visitor was placed inside a containment chamber and transported back to the S-2 facility. TheVisitor recovered from the wounds.

FOLLOW-UP: The incident was investigated by the FBI and Air Force Officeof Special Investigation [AFOSI]. THE INCIDENT REMAINS CLASSIFIED.

IDENTITY OF THE ALIEN: The name of the creature involved in "The Gate 3Incident" was an Archquloid. A-R-C-H-Q-U-L-O-I-D The alien is described as one of the "Big Nosed Grays." It was a 5' 6"tall, gray or tan being with large, black, slanted eyes and a mushroom-like head, with four (4) long fingers. They have yellow eyes with vertical pupils and very large, beaked noses. They are genetically engineered by the Ebens [cloned?] and were given to the U.S. Government for observation/examination/study by the Ebens.

VISITOR HOUSING: This particular Visitor lived in "The Bubble"officially known as "The Clean Sphere" located between Levels 2 and 3 of the 8-level S-2 facility at Area 51. If memory serves me right, there were 12-15 compartments within "The Clean Sphere" or "Bubble" which was located at the south end of the S-2 facility. Both the Archquloid and J-ROD lived in two (2) of the 12-15 compartments marked "Visitor Containment." Victor, it's important to note here that J-ROD and the Archquloid creature were NOT one and the same and that the claims made by some that they were are just plain WRONG. The Archquloid escaped, NOT J-ROD.

What we speculate is that because the Archquloid had to live its primary existence in "The Clean Sphere" and could only spend a minimal amount of time in our atmosphere, that an OVER exposure to our atmosphere somehow affected its sanity and intellect. Furthermore, it caused the creature to become delusional, disoriented and lose its mental faculties for sound reasoning, analysis and judgment. In street parlance, it "lost its mind" or was of unsound mind which accounts for his escape from the high-security "Clean Sphere" facility and the resulting homicide of the security guard.

Consider the following: - this creature came to this planet from another solar system; - traveled about 38 light years [38.42]; - was locked up in a special containment housing complex; - was shocked by our civilization and our culture; - was not allowed to leave; - was under strict compliance controls (metal straps that shocked the creature when it tried to leave or did not comply with our instructions), and; - was unable to communicate in our language. It was probably suffering from PTST [Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome].What a shock! This is the same type of shock felt by our 12 TeamMembers enroute to Planet SERPO in 1965. The creature recovered from its gunshot wounds inflicted by the OSI agent. But it later died, about one year later. By the way, Bob Lazar DID work at Area 51. He is also aware of this incident.

Shady Surveillance This was in bold print

Last month's dramatic testimony by former Deputy Attorney General James Comey has prompted renewed attention and focus on the administration's warrantless domestic spying efforts. Describing the shocking lengths that the White House went to in order to gain legal sanction for its surveillance program, Comey revealed that President Bush called then-Attorney General John Ashcroft's wife to seek permission for former chief of staff Andrew Card and then-White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to visit a debilitated and hospitalized Ashcroft at his bedside. The White House orchestrated the hospital visit in March 2004, one day after a meeting between Vice President Dick Cheney and Comey in which Justice Department officials announced their staunch opposition to certifying the program. Cheney tried to skirt Comey's authority by seeking Ashcroft's approval, but Ashcroft demurred as well. The White House then reauthorized the spying program "without a signature from the Department of Justice attesting as to its legality," prompting at least eight top Justice officials to threaten their resignation. Bush finally backed down, altering the program in order to get the Justice Department's sign-off. The saga over the White House's trevails to get legal approval underscores the serious questions that surround the program -- questions that remain largely unresolved to this day.

ALBERTO GONZALES' DISSEMBLING: Testifying before Congress in Jan. 2006, Gonzales claimed, "There has not been any serious disagreement about the program that the president has confirmed." In light of Comey's dramatic retelling of a showdown that almost led to a mass resignation at the Justice Department in 2004, Gonzales's claim appears extremely difficult to square with the facts. Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Peter Swire explained that there are two possibilities that stem from the differing accounts. Either Comey and Gonzales were referring to the same program, in which case Gonzales lied under oath about the legal disagreements that surrounded the spying program, or Comey's objections applied to a different domestic wiretapping program, suggesting that the administration's spying efforts are broader than the public has been made aware. Gonzales appeared to resolve this dilemma, stating this week that he and Comey were referring to the same program. "Comey's testimony related to a highly classified program which the president confirmed to the American people sometime ago," he said. If Gonzales is now telling the truth, that can only mean he failed to tell the truth in 2006.

SHOWDOWN OVER DOCUMENTS: In order to better understand the legal nature of the administration's warrantless spying program, Jameel Jaffer, a national security analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, urged Congress yesterday to subpoena documents relating to the program, including court orders and opinions by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Members of a House Judiciary subcommittee yesterday threatened to issue such subpoenas after Steven Bradbury, a principal deputy assistant attorney general and head of the Justice Department's office of legal counsel, told the panel that the department would not turn over the documents because of their confidential nature. The New York Times writes that the confrontation over the documents "could set the stage for a constitutional showdown over the separation of powers." With respect to the separation of powers issue, Bradbury famously remarked in July 2006 during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that "the president is always right." Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) refused to back down over the committee's request for documents. "This committee created the FISA statute and the FISA court, yet the President believes we are not entitled to know what he or the court are doing." Nadler continued, "Many have begun to conclude that the shroud of secrecy thrown over these activities has less to do with protecting us from terrorism and more to do with protecting the Administration from having its lawbreaking exposed."

SHROUD OF SECRECY: Citing a policy announced by Bush in Jan. 2007, Bradbury said yesterday that the warrantless wiretapping program hasn't been reauthorized for "several months," and "any electronic surveillance that was occurring as part of the program is now subject to the approval" of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. But Bradbury's comments contradict Bush's explanation of his own policy. In January, Bush said, "Nothing has changed in the program except the court has said we've analyzed it and it's a legitimate way to protect the country." While details of the administration's actions remain "sketchy," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) said earlier this year, "[The administration’s action] is not acceptable to me…simply because I can't trust what they say." Indeed, Bush has lost the public's trust. Prior to the revelation of the NSA spying program, Bush had assured the public in 2004 that "a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed." Bruce Fein, a legal veteran of the Reagan Justice Department, said that the administration's shroud of secrecy suggests they have more to hide. "Delphic remarks by the attorney general and other Bush Administration officials indicate that other foreign intelligence spying programs are ongoing and generally unknown by either the Congress or the American people," Fein said.



IRAQ -- SEN. REED CALLS FOR HADLEY TO BE FIRED: According to President Bush, incoming war czar Army Lt. Gen. Doug Lute "will be the full-time manager for the implementation and execution of our strategies for Iraq and Afghanistan." During his confirmation hearing yesterday, Lute clarified that his new authority means that National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley's portfolio will no longer include Iraq and Afghanistan. Shocked by the revelation, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) argued Hadley should be fired if he's taken a hands-off approach to the most important national security issues: "[F]rankly, Afghanistan, Iraq, ... Iran, are the most critical foreign policy problems we face. And the national security adviser to the United States has taken his hands off that?" When Lute answered, "Sir, that's the design, yes," Reed responded, "Well, then [Hadley] should be fired, because, frankly, if he's not capable of being the individual responsible for those duties and they pass it on to someone else, then why is he there?" After a short recess, Lute returned with a prepared statement -- likely communicated to him by the White House -- in which he backpedaled from his earlier claim that Hadley is now irrelevant on Iraq and Afghanistan. Hadley's "role is not diminished by this appointment," Lute clarified. It is unclear is exactly how Hadley and Lute are to share responsibility. Previously, Lute has rebuked Hadley's often inaccurate statements about the war in Iraq. For example, Hadley has falsely claimed that Iraq is not in a civil war, that the Iraq Study Group supported Bush's escalation, and defended Vice President Cheney's claim that the insurgency was in its "last throes." Lute, however, has suggested that "reduction in force structure would undercut insurgent propaganda," warned against fostering a "dependency syndrome" in which "Iraqis would be content to stand by and watch if the Americans continued providing for their security," and stated yesterday that there is "no evidence" to suggest that debating timelines for redeployment from Iraq "undercuts" U.S. troop morale.

SCIENCE -- BUSH PROMISES VETO OF EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH LEGISLATION: Nearly six years after President Bush placed punitive restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted 247-176 to relax those limits. "The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act would allow federal funds, the financial lifeblood of scientists and laboratories, to flow to embryonic stem cell research." Last month, the Senate passed similar legislation funding the research. Despite 60 percent of Americans and strong majorities of Congress approving embryonic stem cell research, Bush "threatened within minutes of final congressional passage" of the stem cell legislation to veto the bill for a second time. Recycling his old talking points, Bush stated, "If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers would for the first time in our history be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. Crossing that line would be a grave mistake. For that reason, I will veto the bill passed today." "That drew a call from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for a 'drumbeat across America' to persuade Bush to change his mind." Ironically, Bush's concern for the "ethics" of stem cell research was contrasted by the actions of his very own conservative base yesterday. While conservatives claim they are against human cloning, they blocked passage of a The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2007, a bill that would have made it illegal to clone a human being.

IMMIGRATION -- REPORT DEBUNKS MYTH THAT IMMIGRANTS ABUSE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM: Yesterday, Center for American Progress health research analyst Meredith King released a report debunking the five most prevalent "myths about documented and undocumented immigrants' use of U.S. health care," disproving arguments voiced by many immigration opponents this week that undocumented immigrants abuse the U.S. health care system and are partially to blame for spiraling health care costs. CNN anchor and anti-immigration zealot Lou Dobbs has alleged that "[u]ndocumented immigrants have a free ride on the backs of legal, lawful immigrants and American citizens." Rep. Tom Tancedo (R-CO) recently said that "the cost of health care is exacerbated by the fact that we are providing health care to millions of people who came here illegally and access our health care system for free. You pay. They get it." But the American Progress report shows that "immigrants will pay on average $80,000 per capita more in taxes than they will use in government services over their lifetimes." In fact, King notes that "workers without valid social security numbers contribute $7 billion in Social Security tax revenues and roughly $1.5 billion in Medicare taxes annually," while native-born citizens account for "twenty-one percent of total medical costs...compared to 16 percent for documented and undocumented immigrants." Moreover, contrary to popular belief, immigrants rarely use -- much less abuse -- emergency room services, as "fewer than 10 percent of Mexican immigrants, both documented and undocumented, who had been in the United States for fewer than 10 years reported using an emergency room, compared to 20 percent of native-born whites and Mexican Americans." The report demonstrates that "job opportunities across the country are the 'magnet' that draws immigrants to the country; not federal incentives such as health care coverage and services."

CIVIL RIGHTS -- BUSH NOMINEE RESPONSIBLE FOR 'MODERN-DAY POLL TAX' FACES SCRUTINY: On Wednesday, June 13, the Senate Rules Committee will hold a hearing to confirm four nominees for six-year terms on the Federal Election Commission (FEC). One of those nominees, Hans A. von Spakovsky, is drawing resistance from voting rights activists, campaign finance watchdogs, and former officials in the Justice Department's voting rights section. Spakovsky, whom President Bush temporarily placed on the FEC using a recess appointment, is said to have "used every opportunity he had over four years in the Justice Department to make it difficult for voters -- poor, minority and Democratic -- to go to the polls." "He has devoted much of his legal career to suppressing minority voting rights, and he should not be rewarded with a six-year appointment to the Federal Election Commission," said J. Gerald Herbet, a former chief of the Justice Department's voting section who now serves as the executive director of the Campaign Legal Center. "I think that Hans von Spakovsky's record demonstrates that he will use his office to elevate partisan concerns among legitimate law enforcement concerns," he added. During his tenure as a political appointee in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, Spakovsky overruled the recommendations of career attorneys and approved a controversial voter ID law in Georgia, which a federal judge later likened to a "modern-day poll tax." Upon his initial nomination, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) said he was "extremely troubled" because von Spakovsky "may be at the heart of the political interference that is undermining the [Justice] Department's enforcement of federal civil laws."





"Drought, a fixture in much of the West for nearly a decade, now covers more than one-third of the continental USA. And it's spreading," USA Today reports. "As summer starts, half the nation is either abnormally dry or in outright drought from prolonged lack of rain that could lead to water shortages."

G-8 countries backed down yesterday from their strong global warming stance, instead embracing President Bush's proposal to move toward unspecified "substantial cuts" in carbon emissions. The "agreement says the G-8 countries will 'seriously' consider cutting emissions in half by 2050, but it sets no mandatory goals for all."

"Senior House Democrats threatened Thursday to issue subpoenas to obtain secret legal opinions" and other Justice Department documents related to the NSA's warrantless domestic surveillance program, "the most aggressive action yet by Congress in its oversight of the...program."

"Turkey is stepping up its presence along its border with Iraq to levels not seen in years in an effort to root out Kurdish separatist guerrillas who take refuge in northern Iraq. That means that as the American military struggles to control the violence in central Iraq, a second conflict could spill across its northern border."

4: Number of U.S. deaths in Iraq per day in June, with a total of 23 deaths in the first six days of the month. The total death toll for American forces is now 3504.

"Consumer confidence tumbled to a 10-month low" in the face of "nagging worries about gasoline prices, if the yearlong housing slump will worsen and drag down home prices further and whether the economy will, in fact, snap out of its sluggish spell."

"Governors from eight U.S. states on Thursday protested to Congress about possible legislation that they claim will limit their efforts to cut automobile and small-truck emissions. If passed as written in draft form, the legislation would wipe out California's landmark effort to cut auto and light-truck greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30 percent by 2030."

"While the Government Accountability Office (GAO) contended with controversy surrounding a pay-for-performance system that denied nearly 17 percent of its employees cost-of-living increases last year, 72 senior executives and senior-level employees received bonuses totaling more than $900,000 in fiscal year 2006."

And finally: Yesterday in the Alabama Senate, "harsh words" led to "a punch being thrown" between Sens. Charles Bishop (R) and Lowell Barron (D). "Bishop said he punched Barron after the senator called him a 'son of a b*tch.' ... Bishop said he regretted throwing the punch because ‘that’s not the way grown men solve their problems,’ but he said he would not immediately apologize to Barron." (Watch video HERE.)

Nemesis: Does the Sun Have a 'Companion'?

"The trouble with most folks isn't so much their ignorance. It's know'n so many things that ain't so." -- A favorite quote of Richard A. Muller, by 19th century humorist Josh Billings.

When you think big, as Richard A. Muller does, you're bound to create ideas now and then that are so compelling you just can't let go of them -- ideas so outlandish that mainstream scientists are equally eager to dismiss them.

Muller, a physicist at University of California at Berkeley, has had his share of big ideas.

If you don't count the restaurant he owned between 1976 and 1982 ("If anyone near and dear to you wants to open a restaurant, I can now be hired to talk them out of it."), Muller's ideas are generally rooted in solid science and genius extrapolation. He's got a gaggle of prestigious awards to prove it, with titles that say things like "outstanding" and "highly original."

But Muller's biggest idea is a real Nemesis. Or so he claims.

Like a thorn in the side of mainstream researchers, Muller's Nemesis theory -- that our Sun has a companion star responsible for recurring episodes of wholesale death and destruction here on Earth -- seems to reemerge periodically like microbes after a mass extinction.

It's a theory that has many detractors. And it's a theory that has been beaten down and left for dead in the minds of most scientists.

Yet it is a theory that just won't die.

Nemesis is cautiously supported by a handful of scientists, who often sound like ringside rooters eager for a victory but thankful they don't have to put the gloves on. Muller meanwhile acknowledges the possibility that the whole idea could turn out to be wrong, but he is nonetheless confident that Nemesis will be found within 10 years.

"Give me a million dollars and I'll find it," Muller said in a recent telephone interview.

Brave words for a bold theory that if proven true would shake up everything we know about the formation and evolution of our solar system.

Genesis of Nemesis

Muller's idea for Nemesis came to him 1983. Luis Alvarez, then an emeritus professor of physics at the University of California at Berkeley, and his son Walter had recently put forth the theory that a giant impact had wiped out the dinosaurs. (This idea, like so many others that are now widely accepted, met with staunch criticism when it was introduced because it, too, was not mainstream).

Around the same time, two other researchers had suggested yet another controversial idea, that mass extinctions occurred at regular intervals -- every 26 million years or so. Scientists immediately folded the ideas into a new and breathtaking possibility: Impacts by space rocks were causing massive global species destruction every 26 million years.

Luis Alvarez was Richard Muller's mentor, and he suggested that Muller try to debunk the periodicity argument. Pondering this, Muller dreamed up the fanciful companion to the Sun as a possible cause, and with Berkeley's Piet Hut and Marc Davis of Princeton, worked out the details.

Muller gave the object the name of the Greek goddess of retribution -- fitting for a killer star that roamed stealthily beyond the solar system flicking comets at dinosaurs.

In the end, the idea looked surprisingly plausible to Muller and his colleagues, and the results of their work were ultimately published in the journal Nature in 1984. Muller then wrote a book about Nemesis, and he has pursued the companion star, while also doing other research, ever since.

Tossing comets at us

Nemesis, as Muller sees it, is a common red dwarf star that would be visible through binoculars or a small telescope, if only we knew which of some 3,000 stars to look at. These are stars that have been cataloged, but their distances are not known.

Any one of them could be the Death Star, as Nemesis has come to be called by some.

Red dwarfs are the most common stars in the galaxy. They are small and relatively cool, dimmer than our Sun. The notion of companion stars is also exceedingly common -- more than half of all stars are part of such a binary system, in which two stars are thought to form out of a single cloud of gas and dust.

Binary stars settle into a gravitational dance around a common point in space. The smaller of the two stars does most of the orbiting, whereas the larger one is much closer to the center of the dance routine. It's like two kids on a seesaw. For the thing to work properly, the heavier child must sit closer to the center of the apparatus.

Muller figures Nemesis' orbit ranges from 1 to 3 light-years away from the Sun.

On its closest approach, the lethal companion would pass through a vast, but sparsely populated halo of primitive comets called the Oort Cloud, which surrounds our solar system from beyond Neptune's orbit out to nearly a light-year away. (The Sun's nearest known star, Proxima Centauri, is about 4.25 light-years away).

During this passage through or near the Oort Cloud, the gravity of Nemesis would scatter a furious storm of primordial comets that had been relatively undisturbed for 4.5 billion years, since the solar system came into being.

Dislodged from their once-stable orbits, millions or billions of these comets would travel to the inner solar system over millions of years, pulled toward the Sun by its gravity. A handful would run into Earth along the way, and the flurry of would result in mass extinctions.

Simple enough. But Nemesis has for years been dogged by a misunderstanding, Muller says. Most researchers think the theory was long ago dismissed by competing data that claimed its orbit was not possible.

Far-out idea

The orbit assumed for Nemesis is an unusual one, Muller admits. No star has ever been found to orbit so far from a companion. "And that really bothers people," he said. "It makes them think that this is a really far-out idea, literally."

But computer models developed by Muller and his colleagues predict that such an orbit must occur at some point in the evolution of most binary star systems. "We just haven't found such systems yet," he said.

And while Muller appreciates the natural and healthy skepticism of other scientists, he figures they are not interested in funding a search because they erroneously assume that Nemesis cannot be found.

Jonathan Tate is the director of Spaceguard U.K., which lobbies for a government response to the threat of asteroids. Tate is among those who see no rush to find Nemesis. He would rather see money spent on more immediate searches for asteroids closer to Earth that might prove to be humanity's undoing in coming decades or centuries.

As Tate points out, proving that mass extinctions occur every 26 million years, regardless of the cause, is only of academic interest: Humans may not likely to be around to care, as many researchers don't expect our species to last that long. If we do survive, there will likely be plenty of time to worry.

Questioning periodicity

Meanwhile, many scientists see little or no credibility to the studies alleging periodicity in mass extinctions, and hence no need for a Nemesis theory.

Numerous studies have reported cycles in either impacts or mass extinctions. The period between peaks in these studies mostly range from 26 million to 35 million years. Andrew Glikson of the Australian National University says that trying to pin down things that happened so long ago is no simple challenge. For one thing, space rocks that land in the ocean leave few clues, Glikson points out, and Earth is roughly two-thirds water.

And Earth has always had a crust that is on the move. Evidence gets buried, destroyed, and folded into oblivion by the same process that creates mountains and moves continents.

"Some of the suggested periodicities are more likely to represent statistical artifacts than robust observations," Glikson said.

David Raup, a University of Chicago paleontologist, made the original mass-extinction periodicity argument two decades ago along with colleague J. John Sepkoski. The pair studied marine fossil records over a 250 million-year period that they say showed significant spikes every 26 million years.

"To me, the periodicity idea is as well supported as many ideas that have been adopted into the conventional wisdom, but the scientific community is heartily skeptical," Raup told SPACE.com. "Of the 15 or so re-analyses of our data published since the original paper, about half support periodicity and half reject it. It's is still very much in the eye of the beholder."

Muller supports the statistics more emphatically.

"There is a peculiar pattern in mass extinctions, something that cannot be dismissed as a statistical fluctuation," Muller said. "It requires some explanation."

Raup, now retired from active research, would not venture a guess as to when or whether Nemesis might be found, but he expressed hope in the idea: "I am glad Rich [Muller] is still working on it because it may take a lot of effort, and he's the best."

The galactic plane, Planet X and black holes

Other ideas have been put forth to explain the alleged periodicity in mass extinctions.

The most widely accepted is the suggestion that the solar system, as it revolves around the center of the Milky Way, bobs up and down through the plane of the galaxy. This plane is full of gas and dust that never became stars, which collectively has a certain amount of gravity that some expect might dislodge comets from the Oort Cloud.

There are doubts, however, about the amount of mass in the galactic plane and whether or not the timing coincides with the periodicity of mass extinctions.

Others have suggested a dim failed star known as a brown dwarf might be lurking in the distant fringes of the solar system. Muller called the increasing rate of discovery of brown dwarfs, including one that is just 13 light-years away, "extremely discouraging." For if Nemesis were a brown dwarf, it would be harder to find.

Yet another enduring idea is that another large planet lurks beyond Pluto. This so-called Planet X would be a gas ball up to five times the size of Earth, according to some predictions. Even the possibility of a black hole has been raised. Few researchers support these two ideas.

Evidence from the Moon

The best evidence for periodic impacts on Earth may ultimately come from the Moon. While the Earth's crust has been stretched, squashed and folded violently its whole life, the Moon is relatively static, preserving a far more accessible geologic record.

A year ago Muller, Berkeley geologist Paul Renne and then-graduate student Timothy Culler found the Moon underwent a flurry of impacts between 400 million and 600 million years ago. The active period (which may still be going on) presumably affected Earth as well since both bodies are in roughly the same spot in the solar system.

Muller says the sudden increase offers indirect evidence for a sudden change in the orbit of Nemesis, which might have been caused by a passing star.

But the study did not turn up evidence for the 26 million-year periodicity, as hoped. Muller says there was not enough data. The study involved 155 microscopic glass beads formed in the intense heat of lunar impacts and later brought to Earth, in a single gram of soil, by the Apollo 14 crew.

But given that there are "several hundred pounds (kilograms) of [lunar] dust and rocks that have not been analyzed," Muller plans another more detailed study.

Whether or not he finds evidence for Nemesis in Moon dust, it's clear that Muller won't stop looking. He is a man of enduring confidence. But he is also a remarkably conservative scientist, quick as anyone to point out that there is no proof until there is proof.

"I'm realistic," he said. "I may be wrong."

And he recognizes that if the Death Star is not found, the whole idea could become a real Nemesis for the big thinker who dreamed it up.

The great grandson of the Apache leader Geronimo has appealed to the big chief in the White House to help recover the remains of his famous relative - purportedly stolen more than 90 years ago by a group of students - including the President's grandfather.

The story that members of Yale University's secret Skull and Bones society took the remains - including a skull and femur - from the burial site in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, has long been part of the university's lore. But a university historian recently recovered a letter from 1918 that appears to support the story that members of the society did indeed take the remains while serving with a group of army volunteers from Yale, stationed at the fort during the First World War.

The students - among them, Mr Bush's grandfather Prescott - apparently returned with the remains and kept them in their society's headquarters at the university in New Haven, Connecticut. The society's initiation rite reportedly involves kissing a skull, referred to as "Geronimo", usually held in a glass case.

The letter from society member Winter Mead to fellow member F Trubee Davison, made public earlier this month, said: "The skull of the worthy Geronimo the Terrible, exhumed from its tomb at Fort Sill by your club... is now safe inside the [tomb] together with his well worn femurs, bit and saddle horn."

The famous Indian chief's great-grandson is appealing for President Bush's help in recovering the remains. Speaking from his home in Mescalero, New Mexico, Harlyn Geronimo said: "I am requesting his help in getting the remains - the skull and the femur - returned, if they were taken. According to our traditions the remains of this sort, especially in this state when the grave was desecrated ... need to be reburied with the proper rituals. To return the dignity and let his spirits rest in peace ... is important in our tradition." The letter was discovered by the Yale historian Marc Wortman and published in the Yale Alumni Magazine. Mr Wortman said there was still scepticism as to whether the remains were those of Geronimo - something that could probably only be proved by carrying out DNA tests.

"What I think we could probably say is they removed some skull and bones and other materials from a grave at Fort Sill," he said.

"Historically, it may be impossible to prove it's Geronimo's. They believe it's from Geronimo." Geronimo, a leader of the Chiricahua Apache, is remembered as one of the last Native American leaders to hold out against the forces of the US government. He eventually surrendered in Skeleton Canyon, Arizona, in 1886 and was moved first to Florida and then Oklahoma. He died of pneumonia at Fort Sill in 1909, and was buried at the fort's Apache Indian Prisoner of War cemetery.

The White House yesterday did not return calls seeking a comment. A Yale spokeswoman, Dorie Baker, said the university could not comment because the Skull and Bones was a separate entity and that because it was a secret society "we don't know anything". The society has not commented on the issue.

Life of a warrior

Geronimo's real name Goyathlay literally meant "one who yawns", but any further comparisons with lethargy stop there.

The Chiricahua Apache leader was head of one of the last American Indian fighting forces to formally capitulate to the United States, and gained a reputation for his bravery and ability to dodge bullets.

The feared Apache warrior took up arms against the Mexicans, and later the Americans, after Spanish troops massacred his wife and three children in 1858. His tribe was later forcibly moved by the US government to arid reservations.

Geronimo and his 35 warriors avoided the combined armies of Mexico and the US for a year before being captured in 1886 by General Nelson A Miles at Skeleton Canyon, Arizona.

Geronimo became something of a national celebrity, despite being a prisoner. He evenrode in Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural parade, but still died a prisoner of war far from his homeland.

Throughout the centuries there have been rumors of a secret elite manipulating world events for various nefarious purposes. Theories about groups like the Masons, the Illuminati, the Elders of Zion, and others have ranged from the ridiculous and racist to eerily accurate. Today we live in a world where an openly acknowledged elite wields vast and often unquestioned power. For example, the economic activities of many transnational corporations dwarf the gross domestic product of most nations, and the richest three men in the world control more wealth than the 47 poorest countries combined. The shadowy ritual chambers of 19th century secret societies seem an impossible distance from the gleaming board rooms where CEOs and bankers meet today, and yet a fusion of the two continues, albeit far away from the glaring lights of modern news media.

While the current global elite hammers out deals and treaties behind the closed doors of overt globalist organizations like the WTO, IMF, and World Bank, they also meet at shadier locals which seem straight out of an X-Files episode. In California’s Sonoma County lies a redwood retreat known as Bohemian Grove. Proving that truth is stranger than fiction, various world leaders gather here once a year to perform a bizarre ritual known as the “Cremation of Care” which involves a mock human sacrifice ritual before a huge stone statue of the ancient deity Moloch. The Bohemian Club is an off-shoot a more well-known society called Skull and Bones.

Skull and Bones was founded at Yale in 1832, as the second chapter of a German secret society which its founders had come in contact with while studying abroad. Its founders were fascinated with the new scientific methods of propaganda and mass psychology, and based the Order’s teachings on those of German philosopher Hegel, who taught that the State was absolute and the individual meaningless.

Located in New Haven, Connecticut, the Order’s fortunes were based on the wealth of the cousin of one of its founding members, William H. Russell. Samuel Russell had been the primary American player in the “China trade”, or opium smuggling. Many of the other great American and European fortunes were built on this trade as well, for opium was the most lucrative commodity on the planet in the 1830’s.

Dr. Benjamin Sillman Jr., a Bonesman, was the first to make the petrochemicals gasoline and paraffin. He conferred with his colleagues, then made a proposal to the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company, the very first oil company. He told them, “Gentlemen, it appears to me that your Company may have in their possession a raw material from which, by a simple and not expensive process, they may manufacture very valuable products.” Pennsylvania Rock Oil soon passed into the hands of New Haven investors, and the Company’s original owners and financiers, the Bissells and the Townsends, soon had their sons enrolled in Yale and Skull and Bones.

In 1886, Supreme Justice Morrison R. Waite, a Bonesman, made an interesting decision regarding the 14th Amendment, which had been designed to protect freed black slaves. Waite ruled that the amendment applied to business corporations- that a corporation could now claim the legal rights and privileges of a person.

Incidentally, in the 1800’s, Connecticut became known as the “Arsenal of Democracy,” as more per capita defense spending went to it than any other state in the union. Connecticut is the birthplace of the military-industrial complex, against which Dwight D. Eisenhower famously warned, “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

When Rudolf Diesel showcased his new engine at the 1900 Exposition, it presented a major threat to the Oil Monopoly, because the Diesel Engine was originally designed to run on peanut oil. But in 1913, Diesel mysteriously decided to go for a swim while on a ship crossing the English Channel, and within 20 years, his engine was running solely on petrochemicals.

Skull and Bones had their hands in many other important American institutes around this time. After coming to dominate the Yale leadership, Skull and Bones members would go on to be the first Presidents of the University of California, John Hopkins, and Cornell University. They helped to found and set the direction for the Carnegie Institution, the Peabody, Slater, and Russell Sage Foundations, as well as the American Economic Association, the American Historical Association, and the American Psychological Association. Bonesmen Gilman, White, and Rockefeller have also had considerable influence on the development of public education. For those who would downplay the role of Skull and Bones in the development of the United States, consider that members of this Order designed the institutions which have been responsible for teaching Americans their history, defining sanity and normalcy, and telling Americans what and how to think.

Scores of Bonesmen can be traced to other positions of enormous influence, including the Federal Reserve, the Council on Foreign Relations, captains of industry, and all branches of the political apparatus. It should be noted that many Skull and Bones members never achieve any great prominence. But it is this way with every secret society- there have to be a number of “porch brethren”, lending an air of normalcy and respectability, and unaware of the designs of the “inner circle”. And considering that only 15 new members are initiated each year, the number who have risen to the heights of power is quite astonishing.

The actions of the dominant families in Skull and Bones reveal a common agenda, a refinement and expansion of the agenda held by their predecessors: power and profit at any cost, even if that means war, famine, and disease for the rest of us. For Skull and Bones was added a new political objective- a Hegelian super-state, a “New World Order” (to use their own term), in direct contradiction to the vision held by the Founding Fathers. This New World Order would be the synthesis resulting from conflicts between opposing extremes which they themselves would finance and influence. This was the Hegelian “historical dialectic” being used to improve upon the methods used by of the banking families of old.

The cabal’s oil business would find vast new markets as the British, German, and American Navies all switched from coal to oil before World War I. With this leap in military technology came the predictable war, which has been related in American history books as being a consequence of Archduke Ferdinand’s assassination. A much more reasonable explanation for the first World War lies beneath the surface when you learn that the first place British troops deployed during WWI was Iraq.

During Hitler’s rise to power, Nazi Germany received major financial help from members of Skull and Bones, including Prescott Bush. Through Brown Brothers Harriman&Co., the Union Banking Corporation, and Hamburg America Shipping Lines, Bush and other Bonesmen helped German industrialist Fritz Thyssen build the Nazi War Machine. Of all the war materials which the German military used, the percentage which came from Thyssen is astounding: 50.8% of pig iron, 41.4% of universal plate, 36% of heavy plate, 38.5% of galvanized steel, 45.5% of pipes and tubes, 22.1% of wire, 35% of explosives.

So impressed were American corporate leaders with Hitler’s political system, that in the 1930’s, a group of them planned a coup to set up a similar system in America. The coup was to be led by Marine General Smedley Butler, who had served corporate interests for many years by subduing indigenous populations in the Philippines and Caribbean. But Butler was “tired of being a gangster for capitalism,” and cooperated just long enough to identify and expose those behind the plot including the DuPont Family, the Remington Family, and J.P. Morgan, who was backed by the old European banking families, who had Bonesmen partners, and who financed many Skull and Bones families including the Rockefellers and Harrimans. All of this came out in the investigation by the McCormack-Dickstein Committee hearings, the transcripts of which are still publicly available. Although the committee supported Butler’s allegations about the plot, no prosecutions or further investigations followed. At the time of his death, Butler was the most decorated U.S. Marine in history, with two Medals of Honor.

America’s “great enemy” after WWII was the U.S.S.R., but the fact was, Soviet Russia had been financed by Wall Street and Skull and Bones all along. State department records show that guns and ammunitions were being shipped to the Bolsheviks long before WWII. Companies controlled by the Bonesmen of the Harriman group jump-started Russia’s critical oil and manganese mining operations with massive investments and machinery imports. And in 1920, the Anglo-Russian Chamber of Commerce was created to promote trade with Russia, headed by Bonesman Samuel R. Bertron.

On October 22,1945, Secretary of War Robert Patterson created the Lovett Committee, chaired by Bonesman Robert A. Lovett, to advise the government on Post-WWII intelligence activities. With his business partners, the Dulles brothers, Lovett created the new US intelligence organization, the Central Intelligence Agency. The intelligence and finance communities have long been saturated with Bonesmen including, of course, John Kerry and George H.W. Bush. Another important thing to remember about the CIA is their ties with the media. Operation Mockingbird was exposed as part of an ongoing buy-off of mainstream media as well as actual infiltration by CIA agents.

A special election was held in Connecticut in 1952. Although several companies managed by Prescott Bush had been taken over by the U.S. Alien Property Office under the Trading with the Enemy Act in 1942, the Bones-dominated “free press” quietly managed this fact and allowed Mr. Bush to become the new Connecticut Senator. Prescott’s son George Herbert Walker Bush would go on to become President of the United States, as would his son, George Walker Bush. When we remember that the fortunes of Skull and Bones were built on oil and opium, is should hardly surprise us that both Bush presidents led us into wars in the Middle East and Central Asia, which hold the largest concentrations of both commodities in the world. Nor should it surprise us, given then history of Skull and Bones, that the Bush family would continue to finance America’s enemies, as witnessed in 2004 when Jonathan Bush’s Riggs Banks was fined a U.S.-record $25 million for laundering money for terrorist organizations.

For many people, confrontation with these alarming historical facts simply results in a wall of denial. Although disheartening, this reaction is not unexpected, since to accept the facts is to be thrown into a terrifying world such as Neo discovers after taking the red pill in The Matrix. Almost everything we’ve ever been told about history is a lie. Things aren’t going to be okay, and it’s not all good, because the real rulers of this world do not have our best interests at heart. But it’s time to grow up. We’ve got the Internet now, after all, and there’s no excuse for hiding from the knowledge of how the world really works. The precepts of liberty and justice have been perverted far beyond the constraints against which the founding fathers of America originally rebelled. I’m calling you out, America. As Samuel Adams put it, “If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

Pentagon Confirms It Sought To Build Gay Bomb

BERKELEY A Berkeley watchdog organization that tracks military spending said it uncovered a strange U.S. military proposal to create a hormone bomb that could purportedly turn enemy soldiers into homosexuals and make them more interested in sex than fighting.

Pentagon officials on Friday confirmed to CBS 5 that military leaders had considered, and then subsquently rejected, building the so-called “Gay Bomb.”

Edward Hammond, of Berkeley’s Sunshine Project, had used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain a copy of the proposal from the Air Force’s Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio.

As part of a military effort to develop non-lethal weapons, the proposal suggested, “One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused homosexual behavior.”

The documents show the Air Force lab asked for $7.5 million to develop such a chemical weapon.

“The Ohio Air Force lab proposed that a bomb be developed that contained a chemical that would cause enemy soliders to become gay, and to have their units break down because all their soldiers became irresistably attractive to one another,” Hammond said after reviwing the documents.

“The notion was that a chemical that would probably be pleasant in the human body in low quantities could be identified, and by virtue of either breathing or having their skin exposed to this chemical, the notion was that soliders would become gay,” explained Hammond.

The Pentagon told CBS 5 that the proposal was made by the Air Force in 1994.

“The Department of Defense is committed to identifying, researching and developing non-lethal weapons that will support our men and women in uniform,” said a DOD spokesperson, who indicated that the “gay bomb” idea was quickly dismissed.

However, Hammond said the government records he obtained suggest the military gave the plan much stronger consideration than it has acknowledged.

“The truth of the matter is it would have never come to my attention if it was dismissed at the time it was proposed,” he said. “In fact, the Pentagon has used it repeatedly and subsequently in an effort to promote non-lethal weapons, and in fact they submitted it to the highest scientific review body in the country for them to consider.”

Military officials insisted Friday to CBS 5 that they are not currently working on any such idea and that the past plan was abandoned.

Gay community leaders in California said Friday that they found the notion of a “gay bomb” both offensive and almost laughable at the same time.

“Throughout history we have had so many brave men and women who are gay and lesbian serving the military with distinction,” said Geoff Kors of Equality California. “So, it’s just offensive that they think by turning people gay that the other military would be incapable of doing their job. And its absurd because there’s so much medical data that shows that sexual orientation is immutable and cannot be changed.”

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Sunday for the creation of a new world economic order that gives greater clout to fast-growing emerging nations.

Days after attending a Group of Eight summit in Germany, Putin suggested that club was outdated and failed to reflect a shift in economic power away from the industrialised West to countries like his own.

“If 50 years ago, 60 pct of the world’s gross domestic product came from the G7, now it’s the other way round, and 60 percent of the world’s GDP is produced outside,” Putin said in a speech to a major economic conference.

He also took aim at financial organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, saying they were created in “a completely different reality” and had lost relevance in the fast-changing global economy.

Russia is enjoying an unprecedented spell of economic growth that has enabled it to pay down its foreign debts and accumulate foreign exchange reserves of over $400 billion — the world’s third largest.

Putin said the world needed to reduce its dependency on the dollar as a reserve currency, and plugged the rouble as one alternative. Russia abolished capital controls last year.

“We need several financial centres and several reserve currencies,” Putin told an audience of international chief executives and government leaders attending the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Putin declared Russia open to foreign investment, highlighting opportunities to invest in the power generation sector, now undergoing reforms to create market competition, and in infrastructure.

But he called for industrialised nations not to throw up barriers to Russian companies seeking to invest abroad.

“We see how in developed countries despite the doctrine of free investment there are completely different approaches,” he said.

“It turns out that foreign investment is not always seen as positive and foreign participation is practically closed in those sectors such as infrastructure, telecoms and energy.”

The peculiar pose of many fossilized dinosaurs, with wide-open mouth, head thrown back and recurved tail, likely results from the agonized death throes typical of brain damage and asphyxiation, according to two paleontologists.

A classic example of the posture, which has puzzled paleontologists for ages, is the 150 million-year-old Archaeopteryx, the first-known example of a feathered dinosaur and the proposed link between dinosaurs and present-day birds.



"Virtually all articulated specimens of Archaeopteryx are in this posture, exhibiting a classic pose of head thrown back, jaws open, back and tail reflexed backward and limbs contracted," said Kevin Padian, professor of integrative biology and curator in the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California, Berkeley. He and Cynthia Marshall Faux of the Museum of the Rockies published their findings in the journal Paleobiology.

Dinosaurs and their relatives, ranging from the flying pterosaurs to Tyrannosaurus rex, as well as many early mammals, have been found exhibiting this posture. The explanation usually given by paleontologists is that the dinosaurs died in water and the currents drifted the bones into that position, or that rigor mortis or drying muscles, tendons and ligaments contorted the limbs.

"I'm reading this in the literature and thinking, "This doesn't make any sense to me as a veterinarian,'" said lead author Faux (pronounced fox), a veterinarian-turned-paleontologist who also is a curatorial affiliate with Yale University's Peabody Museum. "Paleontologists aren't around sick and dying animals the way a veterinarian is, where you see this posture all the time in disease processes, in strychnine cases, in animals hit by a car or in some sort of extremis."

Faux and Padian argue in Paleobiology that the dinosaurs died in this posture as a result of damage to the central nervous system. In fact, the posture is well known to neurologists as opisthotonus and is due to damage to the brain's cerebellum. In humans and animals, cerebellar damage can result from suffocation, meningitis, tetanus or poisoning, and typically accompanies a long, slow death.

Some animals found in this posture may have suffocated in an ash fall during a volcanic eruption, consistent with the fact that many fossils are found in ash deposits, Faux and Padian said. But many other possibilities exist, including disease, brain trauma, severe bleeding, thiamine deficiency or poisoning.

"This puts a whole new light on the mode of death of these animals, and interpretation of the places they died in," Padian said. "This explanation gives us clues to interpreting a great many fossil horizons we didn't understand before and tells us something dinosaurs experienced while dying, not after dying."

Also, because the posture has been seen only in dinosaurs, pterosaurs and mammals, which are known or suspected to have had high metabolic rates, it appears to be a good indicator that the animal was warm blooded. Animals with lower metabolic rates, such as crocodiles and lizards, use less oxygen and so might have been less traumatically affected by hypoxia during death throes, Padian said.

Padian acknowledged that many dinosaur fossils show signs that the animal died in water and the current tugged the body into an arched position, but currents cannot explain all the characteristics of an opisthotonic pose. By studying a large number of fully articulated fossil skeletons, he and Faux were able to distinguish animals that underwent post-mortem water transport, a non-biological or abiotic process, from those with the classic "dead-bird" posture, which they interpret to be the result of biological processes.

Faux, who also works as a disaster veterinarian from her home in Lewiston, Idaho, set out to test other post-mortem processes - rigor mortis, which is the temporary stiffening of muscles after death; and the drying of muscles, tendons and ligaments - that some paleontologists credit with creating the opisthotonic posture. She obtained badly injured birds -owls, falcons and red-tailed hawks - that had been euthanized at a raptor recovery center and watched them for 8-10 hours, checking periodically to see if they moved during the process.

"In horses and smaller animals, rigor mortis sets in within a couple of hours, so I just looked to see if they were moving or not," Faux said. "And they weren't moving. They were staying in whatever position I'd left them in. I thought, 'If birds aren't doing it, and I'd never observed a horse doing it, then why would dinosaurs be doing it"'"

The idea that drying causes muscles or tendons to contract asymmetrically also didn't make sense, she said, based on her veterinary experience and an experiment she conducted with two euthanized red-tailed hawks, which she dried for two months set them in Styrofoam peanuts to dr. Most joints have counterbalancing muscles that dry the same way, she said, so there was no reason to expect that the muscles would turn a joint during drying. She found no post-mortem movement. She also pinned beef tendons as they dried, and though they shrank a bit, they did not shrink enough even to dislodge the pins. Given these observations, it is hard to imagine how shrinking tendons or muscles could drag a heavy creature into a different position, the researchers noted.

Padian pointed out, too, that all opisthotonic dinosaurs are very well preserved, meaning they evidently did not sit out in the open for long, or scavengers would have quickly scattered the bones. So, he wondered, how could they have been exposed long enough to dry out"

The only explanation that makes sense, they concluded, is central nervous system damage. The cerebellum is responsible for fine muscle movement, controlling, for example, the body's antigravity muscles that keep the head upright. Once the cerebellum ceases to modulate the behavior of the antigravity muscles, Faux said, the muscles pull at full force, tipping the head and tail back, contracting the limbs and opening the mouth.

Padian and Faux urge reanalysis of many fossil finds, referring, for example, to a mass death uncovered in Nebraska in the early 20th century. They argue that cerebellar dysfunction explains the opisthotonic posture of the numerous camel-like fossils better than does the common explanation - that the animals died in a stream and were washed into an eddy or backwater.

The authors also point to a fossil of Allosaurus, a T rex-like animal, that displayed bone lesions suggestive of a bacterial infection that also can lead to meningitis, a disease that can produce opithotonus. The authors point out that their explanation of the opisthotonic posture in dinosaurs and other animals provides a way to assess the role played by microbes in evolution, whether through disease or through other processes such as algal blooms - so-called "red tides" - that can suffocate aquatic animals.

This example and others "suggest that reevaluation may be in order for an untold number of paleoenvironments whose story has been at least partly explained on the basis of the death positions of many of their fossil vertebrates," the authors write in their Paleobiology paper.

It covered stargates/looking glass, geopolitics, timelines, treaties, and a pesky cube...which I revealed was coincidentally reported "missing" from the Maj security vault, at about the same time I passed though there as MJ9 (Pro Tempore), while stopping off before my trip to Brussels. I also indicated that there has been a storm of accusations ever since, by Maj upper echelon Aide-de-camps, as they have erroneously linked an item you removed from my office when I had that severe seizure, with that cube. The circumstantial claim about what you removed being linked to the missing cube is...well...ridiculous! Gosh, I - sure - wish - I - had - seen - who - took - it, I would have yelled, "Stop! You - must - return - that - cube - immediately! You - are - violating - the - rules! Stop!" But...unfortunately, it didn't end up that way! I will say that I am happy it is missing and so can never again be used by the political elite. But...as a former seated member, and a retired Emeritus, I appeal to whomever took it, to (OF COURSE) immediately return it!

The interviewers pinned me down ;D to the fact that "yes" a probable date for T2, which should not occur, has been told to me. I indicated that it is not my place, nor would it be prudent, to release such a date...given the low likelihood. (...albeit the male interviewer rightly stated it is still analogous to 1 bullet in a 5-bullet chamber cylinder! No punches being pulled, and given the fact that I was told that it is a 19% probability of occurrence, with an 85% confidence level, I honestly suggested that the possibility is very slightly worse {or maybe just 20%} than his analogy, due to the confidence level.) That being the case, we seem to be on a variant of the viewed T1 events...plus with the decommissioning of the stargates, which spells out to me (and others) that things are going to be fine.

It was a difficult but worthwhile evening. While I can't say what it is right now...I referred to events prognosticated by the Looking Glass...and told to me in 2001. One of those events is happening NOW. What makes the event very interesting is that its possibility was made public years ago! The information will be made public in the future. Readers will be able to make up their own minds after we make it public. When? It will be made public in the not too distant future! I also corrected the possible misunderstanding that the specified information (to be revealed) was directly viewed by me...when it wasn't. (Such a misunderstanding was probably my fault...but we parsed it out and cleared it up. ) I was told of something, and that information made it public by other means, whereupon I was then questioned by the public about it. NEW YORK -- More than a million animals, including elephants, buffaloes, ostriches, lions, giraffes and a rare type of stork, have been unexpectedly seen living and migrating across Southern Sudan, where no surveys of wildlife had been conducted for the past 25 years due to civil war in the region.

Decades of war wrought significant damage to the region, along with excessive hunting, desertification of the land and periodic droughts, so wildlife numbers were declining in the stricken country. Based on observations in other war-torn nations, conservationists thought the wildlife in Southern Sudan would be wiped out, but it wasn't.
Officials told scientists they had seen herds of animals in the region.

"Although we were telling people that wildlife was still present in southern Sudan, nobody believed us," said Maj. Gen. Alfred Akwoch, undersecretary of the Ministry of the Environment, Wildlife Conservation and Tourism for the government of Southern Sudan.

After Southern Sudan was granted autonomy by the Sudanese government in January 2005, (bringing a tentative end to the two-decade Second Sudanese Civil War), scientists were finally able to conduct aerial surveys of the savannahs for wildlife.

To their surprise, they counted more than 1.2 million white-eared kob, tiang antelope and Mongalla gazelle. They also saw at least 8,000 elephants, it was announced today at a news conference here.

"I haven't seen anything like this, even in the Serengeti [Plain, in Tanzania]," said J. Michael Fay, a conservationist with the Wildlife Conservation Society.

During the survey, scientists first saw a few kob, then a few hundred, then so many that "it looked like the ground was moving," Fay said.

Fay estimates that this migration is at least the third largest of terrestrial animals in the world, possibly even the largest.

"I think what we found in Sudan is nothing short of extraordinary," Fay said.

The survey, which covered a quarter of the surface area of Southern Sudan, replicated an aerial survey conducted in 1981 and found that in some areas, there were even more of certain types of animals than there were two decades ago--the numbers of Mongalla gazelle, for example, sky-rocketed.

Not all areas of Southern Sudan faired as well though; the Southern National Park saw 90 percent losses in some key species such as buffalo and elephants. Scientists suspect that the Janjaweed militias are coming down from northern Sudan and killing the buffalo for food and other uses.

Zebras were also scarce from what the scientists saw, though they plan to go back and conduct further surveys which should show that this survey actually underestimated many animal populations.

Because of the peace accord, Southern Sudan is a geographically and politically distinct region from northern Sudan, where the tumultuous Darfur region is located.

Newly Discovered Failed Star Added to Stellar Neighborhood

A team of astronomers has found a cold object that is neither star nor planet circling a star relatively close to Earth.

The object, a cool brown dwarf orbiting its red parent star, sits about 12.7 light-years from the Sun, making it the third closest such object known to date, researchers said.

Cold and dim, brown dwarfs are objects that are typically more massive than planets but fall short of igniting into full-fledged stars. Astronomers using the Very Large Telescope at European Southern Observatory in Paranal, Chile found the latest brown dwarf orbiting the red star SCR 1845-6357.

"Besides being extremely close to Earth, this object is a T dwarf--a very cool brown dwarf--and the only such object found as a companion to a low-mass star," said Beth Biller, lead author of the study reporting brown dwarf find and a graduate student at the University of Arizona, in a statement. "It is also likely the brightest known object of its temperature because it is so close."

The newly found brown dwarf carries a temperature of about 1,382 degrees Fahrenheit (750 degrees Centigrade) and a mass between nine and 65 times that of Jupiter, researchers said. It also orbits its red parent at a distance 4.5 times that of the average separation between Earth and the Sun, or about 418 million miles (672 million kilometers), they added.

The research will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Despite their proximity, the red star and brown dwarf observed by Biller and her colleagues is not the closest to Earth. Two others have been found around the star Epsilon Indi, which sits about 11.8 light-years from Earth. Another object sits slightly further out, at a distance of about 13 light-years, followed by another brown dwarf 16 light-years from Earth.

One light-year is the distance light travels in one year, about 5.88 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). The nearest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri 4.2-light-years away.

Biller and her team hope their brown dwarf will help astronomers better understand the cold objects that seem to occupy a purgatory between stellar and planetary formation.

Last year, researchers found a brown dwarf surrounded by a disk of material, hinting that the odd objects could spawn their own system of mini-worlds.

Markus Kasper, an ESO team member who participated in the recent brown dwarf study, said the new find allows astronomers to pin down the object's brightness and--after further observations--its precise mass.

"These properties are vital for understanding the nature of brown dwarfs," Kasper said.

Being that there seems to be so many out there all withing 13 light years and they seem to find more each day. It may be sure bet that Nemsis is out there too. Our own Sol may have a near by Brown Dwarf too.

LOS ESTEROS DEL IBERA, Argentina (AP) - The American multimillionaire who founded the North Face and Esprit clothing lines says he is trying to save the planet by buying bits of it. First Douglas Tompkins purchased a huge swath of southern Chile, and now he's hoping to save the northeast wetlands of neighboring Argentina.
He has snapped up more than half a million acres of the Esteros del Ibera, a vast Argentine marshland teeming with wildlife.
Tompkins, 64, is a hero to some for his environmental stewardship. Others resent his land purchases as a foreign challenge to their national patrimony.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Tompkins said industrialized agriculture is chewing up big chunks of Argentina's fragile marshland and savanna, and that essential topsoil is disappearing as a result.
"Everywhere I look here in Argentina I see massive abuse of the soil ... just like what happened in the U.S. 20 or 30 years ago," he said.
Tompkins hopes to do in Argentina what he did in Chile—create broad stretches of land protected from agribusiness or industrial development, and one day turn them over to the government as nature reserves.
Wealthy foreigners have bought an estimated 4.5 million acres in Argentina and Chile in the past 15 years for private Patagonian playgrounds. Sylvester Stallone, Ted Turner and Italian fashion designer Luciano Benetton all have large holdings set amid pristine mountains and lakes.
Tompkins was among the early ones, buying a 35-mile-wide strip of Chile from a Pacific coastal bay to the country's Andean mountain border with Argentina. He said his purchases were intended specifically to protect the environment.
Argentine officials took notice and eagerly courted Tompkins' philanthropy, flying him to several areas of ecological significance in the late 1990s—when the government was strapped for cash because of the economic crisis.
"The land conservation budget was burning a hole in our pocket," Tompkins said.
He bought a 120,000-acre ranch in 1998 and has increased his Argentine holdings to nearly 600,000 acres since then. He now owns well over 1 million acres in Chile and Argentina, a combined area about the size of Rhode Island.
The financial details of the transactions were not disclosed because they were private deals between Tompkins and landowners. There was no major opposition to the deals initially because Tompkins bought the land parcels gradually, keeping a low profile.
Critics now weave many conspiracy theories, accusing Tompkins of seeking control of one of South America's biggest fresh water reserves, and worrying that he might never cede the lands to the state.
"These lands should not belong to an individual, much less a foreigner," said Luis D'Elia, who argues the American could gain "control of resources that are going to be scarce in the future, like water."

Last year, D'Elia, then a minister in Argentina's left-leaning cabinet, accused Tompkins of blocking access to public roads and cut through some locked gates to the land trust's property.
"He blundered in cutting the provincial road, the only access for the people living in the area," D'Elia argued.
This month lawmakers in Corrientes province, where the wetlands are located, modified the local constitution to block foreigners from buying land considered a strategic resource. The law appeared to target any new attempts by Tompkins to increase his holdings.
Tompkins responded in an e-mailed statement from his publicist that such changes would be unconstitutional and likely trigger legal challenges.
Jose Luis Niella, a Catholic priest and social activist, said many poor people no longer have access to lands where ancestors lived freely for generations. "It's not fair for him to be concerned only with protecting the environment," Niella said.
In Chile, independent Sen. Antonio Horvath said the Chilean government must have final say on land usage, complaining that Tompkins' purchases were "effectively splitting the country in two."
Opposition lawmakers in both countries have sought unsuccessfully to expropriate Tompkins' purchases or put limits on extremely large landholdings.

Tompkins shrugs off the protests.
"If you had to go to bed every night thinking about every accusation that would come up the next day, you'd be consumed," he said. "Some of that stuff is laughable. ... You've just got to live with that and focus on the things you're doing."

But not everyone is reassured

Kris McDivitt thinks big. She plans to save 1.5m acres of South American wilderness and create four national parks. "This is our latest purchase," says the former head of the giant Patagonia clothing company as she looks at photographs of an Argentine swamp she bought last year.

Her new property will provide 280 species of birds with access to an environmentally rich habitat - and also allow her, and her husband Doug Tompkins, to escape the torrential rains that soak the huge areas they have also bought in Patagonia. In the past year, McDivitt has snapped up 260,000 acres of land in Argentina as she launches a non-profit foundation, the Patagonia Land Trust.

"We are just getting going in Argentina," she says flipping through a catalogue of the foundation's ecosystems. "It is an intact forest. Biodiversity can flourish and remain undisturbed." She concedes that some of the land will need 200 or 300 years to recover from overgrazing by sheep, but says that she sees her foundation guiding a master management plan "for the next 1,000 years". On the other side of the Andes in Chile, Tompkins is equally ambitious. The co-founder of the billion-dollar North Face outdoor gear company has spent eight years buying land to make the 800,000-acre Pumalin Park - a temperate rainforest complete with snow-capped volcanoes and glacial fjords. He plans to give it to the government.

This couple, who own more than 2m acres in Chile and Argentina, are "eco barons", multi-millionaires buying swathes of wild, barely inhabited land around the world to conserve some of the world's remotest places.

Celebrities including Ted Turner (10,000 acres), George Soros (1m acres) and Luciano Benetton (2m acres) have also jetted down to South America to do their conservation bit. Sylvester Stallone, Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas are buying land. The same phenomenom is taking place in South Africa, where businessman Adrian Thompson has bought 45,000 acres, stocked them with lions and other mega fauna and, after ripping out all sign of previous human habitation in one 7,500-acre area, has had it declared Africa's first privately owned official wilderness area.

Meanwhile, Gordon Moore, co- founder of the giant Intel computer empire, last month gave Dollars 261m to the American charity, Conservation International to buy land and to carry out research in 25 of the world's most scientifically important biodiversity "hot spots" - mainly in Brazil and the tropics. Moore intends this to be just a downpayment on his plan to raise Dollars 6bn for conserving the world's most biologically rich places.

"There are more and more of these projects," says McDivitt. "People are very interested in leaving something more permanent than a wing on a museum. And, really, how many Citation jets can you own?" A second-hand 1998 Cessna Citation sells for about Dollars 3m, and land in Patagonia, the Amazon, South Africa and developing countries is very cheap. In many areas of Patagonia, ranches still sell for less than pounds 20 an acre.

Tompkins bought his first 42,500 acres for just pounds 250,000 and, having cut ties with their companies in the 1990s, the couple live in their remote Chilean homestead without electricity, computer, email or phone. They are surrounded by their vast properties - but also by the suspicions of people who question their intentions.

Tompkins and McDivitt have walked into a political minefield, and attacks against them have come in waves since they set up shop in Chile in 1994. Airforce jets have buzzed their retreat, they have received death threats and been accused of being a security threat, of planning a nuclear waste dump, setting up a Jewish homeland, and being American spies.

Meanwhile, church leaders have questioned Tompkins on everything from his opposition to population growth to his alleged support for US pro-abortion groups. Religious leaders lobbied the Vatican and Chilean public opinion to block the sale of Santiago university lands to Tompkins.

And the former president of Chile, Eduardo Frei, often lambasts the project. Frei says: "All indications that we have is that he threw the peasants off their land and that whenever there is development he blocks it. He won't allow free transit through (his land) and blocks the installation of salmon farms."

Tompkins is criticised also for his promotion of "deep ecology", the philosophy of the Norwegian Arne Naess, who argues that environmental destruction is so prolific that only a "deep" re-invention of modern society could reverse the pillaging of natural ecosystems. Naess contrasts this with "shallow" ecological trends - such as recycling or fuel-efficient cars - that he insists are temporary patches on a gaping wound.

"Our project ran into problems because it favours conservation and care for the environment, and confronts that runaway, pro-development juggernaut," says Tompkins. "It is an inevitable clash of concepts."

"The urban legends have died down," says McDivitt. "But what is literally painful is the accusation that we kicked people off their land. These farmers can't make it; they want to sell their land." Indeed, once the word leaked out that a pair of rich gringos were buying uninhabited - and, many say, uninhabitable - forest tracts, proposals flooded in.

Life for Tompkins in Chile is easier as he slows down his land purchase programme, learns to speak Spanish and signs agreements limiting his future land holdings. "We were clearly a little naive about the amount of political and non-political opposition we would face," he says. "We should have tried to know more, going in, about the political culture. We're getting better at that."

In an effort to integrate the few locals who live near his properties, Tompkins has set an ambitious plan to build trails, lookout points, bridges and a school.

Although he periodically announces that he is fed up with criticism and he might abandon Chile, people close to him say he is convinced that, in less than 10 years, his land will be converted into a new national park, ensuring his legacy. Tompkins says he wants people to copy his idea. "Those who can do a lot because of their position and potential should jump right in there. They will find tremendous pleasure in doing this, and discover that it is worth every penny."

Purchasing land for conservation is now a worldwide concern, with conservation groups such as the Ecology Fund and the World Land Trust buying up parts of the Amazon rainforest, oldgrowth forests in the US, and property in places as diverse as Scotland and the Lebanon. One British operation has put a down-payment on 20,000 acres of Patagonian coastland.

Conservation professionals see potential good and harm in it. "It depends on the country," says Chris Hail, international head of programmes at the Worldwide Fund for Nature. "It has to fit in with the development needs of the country. We prefer to ask what is the long-term sustainable plan for the country? When (huge areas) are owned by a private individual, you have to ask what happens when that person dies? Will it still be a national park in 100 years' time?"

Hail and others want to avoid people buying land and then trying to just preserve it, or throwing people out and locking up resources which could be used sustainably over years. Some countries are more open than others. Unlike the constant controversies in Chile, McDivitt's Patagonia Land Trust programme in Argentina has been heralded by politicians and the press as a godsend. "The distrust and paranoia about land conservation is much less in Argentina," she says. "All of our work has been accepted with open arms."

A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or "the Course") (originally published in 1975) is a book considered by its students to be their "spiritual path".


According to Dr. Helen Schucman and the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP), Dr. Helen Schucman and Dr. William Thetford "scribed" the book by means of a process coming from a divine source through a form of channeling which Schucman referred to as "inner dictation". Schucman described the divine source of her channeling as none other than the person of Jesus Christ. Well.....Dr. William Thetford, headed the CIA's "Mind Control" MK-ULTRA SubProject 130: Personality Theory, while at Columbia University between 1971 - 1978. Dr. Thetford's Professional Bio, also available on the A Course in Miracles web site, makes reference to his involvement in a Personality Theory Research Project while Professor of Medical Psychology at Columbia University, but the information does not specifically cite this as a CIA MK-ULTRA SubProject.

There is a connection between Unity Church, "A Course In Miracles", MK-ULTRA Artichoke Subproject 130, Scientology, the UFO Myth and the Stanford Research Institute. "A Course in Miracles" was a CIA manipulation device. It was an experiment orchestrated by the CIA/US government. Many were DAMAGED by it.
It was implemented by Bill Thetford (an agent of the CIA) at Columbia University.

William Thetford, also a Columbia professor, was a mysterious character and "probably the most sinister person I ever met", the priest recalled. Only after he retired from teaching did Thetford's Columbia colleagues (who knew him best as a rare-books expert) discover that all during the years they worked with him, the man had been employed as an agent of the CIA -- one who was, among other things, present at the first fission experiment conducted by physicists assigned to the Manhattan Project. Thetford also was "the most religious atheist I have ever known", Groeschel recalled, and conceived a great enthusiasm for A Course in Miracles, personally arranging for its publication. Schucman was embarrassed, Groeschel remembered, and confided to the priest her fear that the book would create a cult, which of course it did.

Groeschel initially read the Course as "religious poetry", but grew steadily more negative in his assessment of it as the years passed and sales of the three volumes passed into the millions of copies. From his point of view, A Course in Miracles served to undermine authentic Christianity more effectively than just about any other work he could recall, and while he was inclined to reject the position of St. John of the Cross that "these things are diabolical unless proven otherwise", doubts had crept in over the years. Most troubling to him by far was the "black hole of rage and depression that Schucman fell into during the last two years of her life", the priest explained. She had become frightening to be with, Groeschel recalled, spewing psychotic hatred not only for A Course in Miracles but "for all things spiritual". When he sat at Schucman's bedside as she lay dying, "she cursed, in the coarsest barroom language you could imagine, 'that book, that goddam book'. She said it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. I mean, she raised the hair on the back of my neck. It was truly terrible to witness".
