Post Yellow fever vaccination
I just heard on the radio that the WHO have announced a massive yellow fever vaccination programme in west Africa. They plan to vaccinate 20 million people.

Post Re: Yellow fever vaccination
Looking on the WHO website, they say it is easily transmissible and there is no cure so vaccines are the only way to prevent outbreak.
I don't trust those WHO guys but maybe they're right in this case.

Post Re: Yellow fever vaccination
Rick - I was vaccinated for yellow fever prior to moving to Venezuela. Yellow fever is endemic in Venezuela.

This vaccine is a live virus and is only given (in the States) on certain days of the week at the public helath department. The only people allowed in the room are the nurse and the person receiving the vaccine in case the vial were to be dropped and break.

As a result, I was unable to give blood for 10 years!

And BTW - this puppy HURTS like the dickens and caused a 2 inch WELT on my arm! Obviously, I had absolutely NO natural immunity.

Yellow fever is caused by mosquitoes and, yes, outbreaks do happen spontaneously - often as a result of unusually wet weather. Even though East Texas and I were vaccinated prior to arrival in country - we always slept under mosquito netting.

Yellow fever was also a scourge in my part of Texas - the Gulf Coast as well long ago.
