LONDON — A new superbug could spread around the world after reaching Britain from India -- in part because of medical tourism -- and scientists say there are almost no drugs to treat it.

The superbug has so far been identified in 37 people who returned to the U.K. after undergoing surgery in India or Pakistan.

In an article published online Wednesday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, doctors reported finding a new gene, called NDM-1. NDM-1 makes bacteria highly resistant to almost all known antibiotics, including the most powerful class called carbapenems, and experts say there are no new drugs on the horizon to tackle it. It has been seen largely in E. coli bacteria, the most common cause of urinary tract infections, and on DNA structures that can be easily copied and passed onto other types of bacteria.

The FDA is now proposing that antibiotics used to treat non-lethal infections which often resolve on their own, such as sinusitis, ear infections and bronchitis, be tested under different methods: superiority trials or placebo-based trials.

But showing one antibiotic is superior to another is hard because many antibiotics work so well, Spellberg said.

Cox of the FDA said clinical trials that show an experimental drug is significantly better than a current drug would provide clear evidence that the experimental drug works. He also acknowledged it may be difficult to show that an experimental antibacterial drug is better than a current drug.

Placebo trials, in which the drug is tested against a look-alike but useless pill or injection, are also unrealistic, according to some experts. It’s nearly impossible to persuade patients with a painful sinus infection to enroll in a study with a 50 percent chance of getting a sugar pill and not a drug, they said.

Dr. David Shlaes, who worked in pharmaceutical antibiotic development for decades and is now a consultant to the industry, said it is absurd to be, in effect, questioning if antibiotics work.

Back in 1910 Europe experienced a massive cholera epidemic swept into Lativa itself.

My grandmom used tell me about the time she was 10 at the time her family of eight brothers and sisters were very poor. My great grandfather was a grounds keeper on the estate of German Lord (Baron) Latvia being a german/russian Monarchist land instead of independent.

Cholera was wide spread even the wealthy could not fight it nor had medicine for it. So if you got it was two weeks of fighting for your life in bed and your family keeping you ice cold so that the fever wouldn't kill you. Some people like my Grand mom were lucky you got it, fought it and recovered in matter of a week. Having an immunity for the rest of your life.

Two of her brothers and a sister ages 1-5 were not lucky. One day playing with the rest of their brothers and sisters. An the other day. Well my great grandfather had to dig their own graves. Not even the the undertakesrs would take the risk of contracting it. The Priest only came out two weeks later to say a mass over their graves.
