Post TSA full body scanner
I did a search but didn't see any technical info on the radiation from these full body scanners. I think it is important to know the scientific facts in this, as in any, issue.

Negative health effects of full body scanning

As new government directives are now mandating full body (terahertz) scanning (or pat down searches) of our private parts on all US inbound flights, a recent research article in arXiv points to potential negative health effects from the new technology. Terahertz waves penetrate non-conducting material like clothing, but then they deposit energy in the skin. Now researchers at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory have shown that terahertz radiation may be able to do some serious damage to the DNA it encounters when bouncing off your body.

snip

we argue that a specific terahertz radiation exposure may significantly affect the natural dynamics of DNA, and thereby influence intricate molecular processes involved in gene expression and DNA replication.

http://arxiv.org/abs/0910.5294

Quoting David Brenner, director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University and a professor of radiation biophysics.

“If you think of the entire population of, shall we say a billion people per year going through these scanners, it’s very likely that some number of those will develop cancer from the radiation from these scanners.”

"Each time the same person receives a backscatter scan, the small risk associated with the low dose of radiation is multiplied by the number of exposures."

.....he is most concerned about frequent fliers, pilots and young people, because children are more sensitive to radiation. (damaging their DNA!!!)
*****************************

.....Two pilots unions, representing some 16,000 pilots, have urged their members to avoid full-body scanning, citing health concerns as a key reason.

.....In April, four science and medical faculty members at the University of California, San Francisco, sent a letter to the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy expressing concerns about potentially serious health risks related to the X-ray scanners.

.....(They cited) risks to various population segments: children
senior citizens
women susceptible to breast cancer.

.... (They)called for a clear screening policy for pregnant women once possible risks to the fetus are known.

.... they believe there should be a moratorium on full-body scanning until further study is conducted.

Excellent article, lots more here:

N.J. lawmakers to announce opposition to full-body scanning at airports
Published: Monday, November 15, 2010, 11:20 AM Updated: Monday, November 15, 2010, 12:11 PM

TRENTON — State lawmakers will hold a news conference in Trenton at noon today to announce their opposition to airline screening procedures used by the Transportation Safety Administration.

Legislators will introduce resolutions in the Senate and Assembly calling on Congress to review the TSA's full-body scanner program and enhanced pat-downs imposed on passengers who opt not to be scanned.

State Sen. Michael J. Doherty (R-23rd district) said that the enhanced pat-downs amount to a 'groping' that could violate New Jersey privacy laws and possibly the U.S. Constitution

"Your constitutional rights shouldn't have to be violated when you fly on a airplane," Doherty said.

It looks like the government’s decision to force children through dangerous naked body scanners and molest millions of travelers who “opt-out” of the scan in deference to genitalia-groping patdowns will have a direct impact on the airlines this holiday season.

“With the busiest holiday travel season nearing, fliers face long security lines and new rigorous patdown checks aimed at discovering hidden explosives,” reports Reuters. “As a result, some travelers are questioning whether to fly at all,” especially if they have children.

If this keeps up, the big corporate and unionized airlines will be looking at a drastic reduction in business. It may even lead to congressional hearings.

Reuters has posted a poll online asking if the porno-scanners and fondling have affected your decision to fly. As of 7:30 PM CST, 97% respondents said the increased Gestapo-like behavior at airports around the country has people thinking about alternate travel plans in order to avoid intrusive security scans and patdowns.

How Terahertz Waves Tear Apart DNA

http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/24331/

snip

Alexandrov and co have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they've found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That's a jaw dropping conclusion. :awe

And it also explains why the evidence has been so hard to garner. Ordinary resonant effects are not powerful enough to do this kind of damage but nonlinear resonances can. These nonlinear instabilities are much less likely to form which explains why the character of THz genotoxic effects are probabilistic rather than deterministic, say the team.

This should set the cat among the pigeons. Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe. :censor

What really got me was the warning by Brenner in a previous post that he feared the effects of these waves on fetuses!! And there must be many women who are flying before they realize they are pregnant. Imagine the effects on a developing fetus especially at an early stage of having the DNA disrupted!! And the gov't is trying to force us through these scanners.

What Uncle John said hit me right between the eyes; this isn't about security. So what is it about? Aside from forcing compliance, and accustoming us to having to do whatever we are told in the name of "security", I have to wonder about other possible results TPTB are looking for.

"Everything is about the DNA." quoted from a reliable source a couple of years ago. Now I begin to see this warning coming true in several ways. Disruption of DNA by THz scanners - if they can manipulate DNA, they can control us all, and create us in the mold they want. DNA in diseases: they are looking for the right agent to react with our DNA and cause the most death possible. When they have this, the pandemic they release will be unstoppable. Controlling DNA means controlling the very substance of life, the control panel if you will. I see this scanner as a very scary instrument of destruction and control, and the groping just a crude method to force us into their DNA-altering machine.

Just another aside on DNA - In my area (NW CT) the push for flu vaccine is everywhere. No more vaccine clinics, now you can just walk in to your pharmacy and ask for a shot. In Walmart there is a table set up permanently in the main aisle, staffed by personnel ready to give the shot at the drop of a hat, so to speak. Personally, I am extremely distrustful of flu vaccines (well to be honest, of many vaccines, if not all) and have to ask, why the push? Especially since there is more than one study that showed people who had been vaccinated against flu previously were more likely to get the flu in the next season. So, aside from the given of money making for big pharma, what else could they be trying to do? I'm not sure, but I will be looking into it as the season progresses.

Yep! It isn't about security when we have cargo PLANES going unscreened.

Read an interesting comment on one of the articles about the scanning. An anonymous poster said "follow the money."

Sooo - that's where I'm going with this.

Who manufactures these scanners?

How much do they cost?

How many has the US Gov contracted for?

Who owns stock in this (these) company(ies)?

I'm checking this out now and will get back as soon as I can find out something.

The TSA and the full-body-scanner lobby

snip

Let's look at those expensive, hi-tech body screeners our congressmen are now thinking about buying.

One manufacturer, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is American Science & Engineering, Inc. AS&E has retained the K Street firm Wexler & Walker to lobby for "federal deployment of security technology by DHS and DOD." Individual lobbyists on this account include former TSA deputy administration Tom Blank, who also worked under House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Chad Wolf -- former assistant administrator for policy at TSA, and a former aide to Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Tex., a top Senate appropriator and the ranking Republican on the transportation committee -- is also lobbying on AS&E's behalf.

Smiths Detection, another screening manufacturer, employs top transportation lobbying firm Van Scoyoc Associates, including Kevin Patrick Kelly, a former top staffer to Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., who sits on the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee. Smiths also retains former congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley, R-Md.

Former Sen. Al D'Amato, R-N.Y., represents L3 Systems,

And, of course, the Big Dog Daddy:

snip

Since the attempted bombing of a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day, former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has given dozens of media interviews touting the need for the federal government to buy more full-body scanners for airports.

What he has made little mention of is that the Chertoff Group, his security consulting agency, includes a client that manufactures the machines.

snip

Chertoff's advocacy for the technology dates back to his time in the Bush administration. In 2005, Homeland Security ordered the government's first batch of the scanners -- five from California-based Rapiscan Systems.

Today, 40 body scanners are in use at 19 U.S. airports. The number is expected to skyrocket at least in part because of the Christmas Day incident. The Transportation Security Administration this week said it will order 300 more machines.

In the summer, TSA purchased 150 machines from Rapiscan with $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Rapiscan was the only company that qualified for the contract because it had developed technology that performs the screening using a less-graphic body imaging system, which is also less controversial. (Since then, another company, L-3 Communications, has qualified for future contracts, but no new contracts have been awarded.)

Local prosecutors warn TSA agents not to be sexual with pat downs

By Mike Rosenberg

As nearly 2 million holiday travelers pack Bay Area airports starting Friday, local prosecutors have a warning for overzealous security agents performing the new federal pat-down: touch passengers the wrong way, and we'll throw you in jail.

Unsuspecting families and rookie travelers using San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland international airports this Thanksgiving might not know about the Internet catchphrase "don't touch my junk" or the Transportation Security Administration's more invasive searches. But by the end of next week, they might know a little too much about them.

Although authorities in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties said they have not received any criminal complaints since the procedures began earlier this month, the searches can involve touching of the genital and breast areas, which critics say is akin to sexual assault.

'Whole Body Imaging Technology and Body Scanners ("Backscatter" X-Ray and Millimeter Wave Screening)

Introduction

EPIC has filed a lawsuit to suspend the deployment of body scanners at US airports, pending an independent review. Body scanners produce detailed, three-dimensional images of individuals. Security experts have described whole body scanners as the equivalent of "a physically invasive strip-search." The Transportation Security Administration operates the body scanner devices at airports throughout the United States. On July 2, 2010, EPIC filed a petition for review and motion for an emergency stay, urging the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to suspend the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) full body scanner program. EPIC said that the program is "unlawful, invasive, and ineffective." EPIC argued that the federal agency has violated the Administrative Procedures Act, the Privacy Act, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Fourth Amendment. EPIC cited the invasive nature of the devices, the TSA's disregard of public opinion, and the impact on religious freedom.

No Security Pat-Downs for Boehner
By JEFF ZELENY

3:37 p.m. | Updated Representative John A. Boehner, soon to be the Speaker of the House, has pledged to fly commercial airlines back to his home district in Ohio. But that does not mean that he will be subjected to the hassles of ordinary passengers, including the controversial security pat-downs.

As he left Washington on Friday, Mr. Boehner headed across the Potomac River to Reagan National Airport, which was bustling with afternoon travelers. But there was no waiting in line for Mr. Boehner, who was escorted around the metal detectors and body scanners, and taken directly to the gate.

Those latex gloves Transportation Security Administration agents wear while giving airline passengers those infamous full-body pat-downs apparently aren't there for the safety and security of passengers – only the TSA agents.

That's the word being discussed on dozens of online forums and postings after it was noted that the agents wear the same gloves to pat down dozens, perhaps hundreds, of passengers, not changing them even though the Centers for Disease Control in its online writings has emphasized the important of clean hands to prevent the exchange of loathsome afflictions.

"Herpes via latex glove ... ewwww," wrote one participant on the independence-minded AR15 website forum.

Responding to the question, "Does the TSA change latex gloves after each sexual assault?" another wrote on the same forum, "I seriously doubt it. Gloves are for their protection, not yours."

Chertoff is going to make a killing from more than one new security measure being put in place at American airports.

snip

He’s one of the investors that picked up the bankrupt company “Clear” at auction. This system appears to be already up and running in Orlando and is slated to open in Denver in Nov 2010. Perhaps by Thanksgiving?

Back in May 2010 the NYT reported:

Quote:
The assets of Verified Identity Pass, the start-up that ran the Clear service in 18 airports in the United States and shut down about a year ago in a dispute with creditors, were acquired for $6 million in a federal bankruptcy proceeding on April 16.

The winning bidder, AlClear, is led by two former investment managers and backed in part by Robert V. LaPenta, chief executive of L-1 Identity Solutions, a biometrics company based in Stamford, Conn., that supplied kiosks and other technology to the original Verified Identity Pass.

The new company, to be renamed Clear, will be based in New York. Mr. LaPenta and Michael Chertoff, a former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, will sit on its board.

In 2005, Congress expressed concerns about a private company storing vital individual data;

Quote:
The private company would be in charge of verifying identity documents and maintaining a database full of personally identifiable data and images of the identity documents submitted by U.S. citizens and permanent foreign residents. The private company, unlike TSA and other federal government agencies, is not subject to the restrictions of the Privacy Act of 1974.

There is 'no safe dose of radiation' from TSA naked body scanners

(NaturalNews) Besides the fact that they are being operated by an agency that demonstrates on a daily basis a disdain and disregard for discretion, privacy, and professionalism, the Transportation Security Administration's full-body backscatter x-ray machines are just not safe.

That's the diagnosis of Dr. Dong Kim, the neurosurgeon who treated U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., when she was shot in the head in January 2011 by a crazed gunman in Tucson.

"There is really no absolutely safe dose of radiation," said Kim, chair of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical School. "Each exposure is additive, and there is no need to incur any extra radiation when there is an alternative."

In fact, Kim says he doesn't allow the TSA to irradiate him when he travels; he always opts for the individual pat down when passing through airport security.

More opting out

He's not alone. Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, also says he opts out of the x-ray, citing concerns that the machines may not be properly calibrated and inspected in a timely manner.

That kind of apprehension is spreading. The European Union is so concerned about the radiation levels emitted by backscatter x-ray machines that it has put a moratorium on their use continent-wide.

The more is known about them, the more dangerous they seem.

TSA to pull revealing scanners from airports

The Transportation Security Administration will remove 174 full-body scanners from airport security checkpoints, ending a $40 million contract for the machines, which caused a uproar because they revealed a spectral naked form of passengers.

TSA Administrator John S. Pistole issued the order this week after concluding that new software that made the machines less intrusive could not be developed in time to meet a June 1 deadline mandated by Congress.

**********************

Here's the latest in the long, strange, often frustrating saga of airport security scanners: The Transportation Security Administration has ended a contract with Rapiscan, the manufacturer of the controversial backscatter screener.

The reason, per the TSA? It wasn't that the machines subjected consumers to objectionably high levels of radiation -- a matter that will soon be the subject of a National Academy of Sciences investigation. It was instead that Rapiscan Systems failed to deliver software to protect the privacy of passengers -- specifically, to create a system that would avoid creating nude, if cartoonish, images of passengers.

As the Los Angeles Times reports, "TSA gave Rapiscan until June 2013 to come up with a software upgrade to prevent the scanner from projecting the naked image. TSA officials said Rapiscan won't be able to meet that deadline." As the agency itself put it in a statement, "TSA has strict requirements that all vendors must meet for security effectiveness and efficiency since the use of this technology is critical to TSA's efforts to keep the traveling public safe."

and then there's this:

TSA pays $245 million for smaller, faster body scanners

The Transportation Security Administration is dropping nearly a quarter of a billion dollars on compact, next-generation body scanners to better detect concealed explosives, such as the newfangled underwear bomb recently seized in Yemen. The imaging machines, like other upgraded systems, hide a passenger’s nude body from TSA officers by displaying generic representations of appendages with suspect items flagged.

Three five-year contracts paying out a combined total of up to $245 million have been awarded to L-3 Communications Corp., American Science and Engineering Inc. and Smiths Detection, according to government databases. The procurement documents released during the past week do not disclose the number of machines purchased or name the airports where they will be stationed.
