Officials make break in baffling disease killing Cambodian children

Phnom Penh, Cambodia (CNN) -- Health officials say they have made an important discovery in the mystery surrounding the deaths of 64 children in Cambodia.

The Institut Pasteur in Cambodia tested samples taken from 24 patients and found 15 had tested positive for Enterovirus Type 71 -- a common cause of hand, foot and mouth disease that can also cause severe neurologic complications, mainly in children.

"These results now give a good explanation to this outbreak," Dr. Philippe Buchy, head of the institute's virology unit, said in an e-mail. "We will get more results hopefully by next Tuesday or Wednesday."

But an official with the World Health Organization cautioned that the outbreak has not been fully solved, and more analysis is needed.

Outbreaks "occur periodically in the Asia-Pacific region," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Brunei had its first major outbreak in 2006. China had an outbreak in 2008.

Though the detection of EV71 in Cambodia is significant, there may be other factors, said Dr. Beat Richner of Kantha Bopha hospitals.

Over the past three months, 66 children -- between 2 and 3 years old -- were admitted to Kantha Bopha facilities. All but two died mysteriously after suffering severe neurological and respiratory complications, Richner said.

This is some nasty stuff! My twin great nieces contracted this last winter. One of them nearly died from it while the other one was ill but not as ill as her fraternal twin. Twin B was hospitalized for 5 days - 2 of them in ICU. It was touch and go there for about 48 hours.

Prayers winging to the families of these poor children.

I don't dispute the voracity of this disease Blue. What makes me think is what caused the outbreak? In my country - these things happen due to poverty and therefore poor nutrition. Cellular toxicity is the main roue of failure where poor quality food alters the body chemistry and the immune system fails.

I lay a $10 side bet that the WHO recommends that ALL children in Cambodia MUST be vaccinated!

And then they ask Bill Gates Foundation to run the campaign...

It may be a Eugenics campaign in the making.

There is no vaccine for this, Sky.

Prevention

There is no vaccine to protect against the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease.

A person can lower their risk of being infected by
•Washing hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers and using the toilet. Visit CDC’s Clean Hands Save Lives! for more information.
•Disinfecting dirty surfaces and soiled items, including toys. First wash the items with soap and water; then disinfect them with a solution of chlorine bleach (made by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach and 4 cups of water).
•Avoiding close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing eating utensils or cups with people with hand, foot, and mouth disease.

If a person has mouth sores, it might be painful to swallow. However, drinking liquids is important to stay hydrated. If a person cannot swallow enough liquids, these may need to be given through an IV in their vein.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. However, some things can be done to relieve symptoms, such as
•Taking over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and fever (Caution: Aspirin should not be given to children.)
•Using mouthwashes or sprays that numb mouth pain

Persons who are concerned about their symptoms should contact their health care provider.

With my great niece, all they could do was provide support for her - hydration, and relieving the symptoms. She had high fever 104+ and they put her on a cooling bed in ICU. She was unable to nurse or take a bottle due to the sores in her mouth.

It was pitiful. :(

Overview

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is caused by viruses that belong to the Enterovirus genus (group). This group of viruses includes polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and enteroviruses.

•Coxsackievirus A16 is the most common cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the United States, but other coxsackieviruses have been associated with the illness.

•Enterovirus 71 has also been associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease and outbreaks of this disease.
