Uganda Ebola outbreak: patients flee hospital amid contagion
Terrified patients fled from a hospital in western Uganda as soon as news broke that a mysterious illness that killed at least 14 people in the region was Ebola, one of the world's most virulent diseases. Ignatius Besisira, a member of parliament for Buyaga East County in the Kibaale district, said people had at first believed the unexplained deaths were related to witchcraft. "Immediately, when there was confirmation that it was Ebola … patients ran out of Kagadi hospital (where some of the victims had died)," he told the Guardian. "Even the medical officers are very, very frightened," he said. Government officials and a World Health Organisation representative confirmed the Ebola outbreak at a news conference in Kampala on Saturday. "Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute ... have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola haemorrhagic fever," they said in a joint statement. Health officials said at least 20 people had been infected and of those 14 had died. There is no treatment or vaccine against Ebola, which is transmitted by close personal contact and, depending on the strain, can kill up to 90% of those who contract the virus. snip Read more here:

Re: Uganda Ebola outbreak: patients flee hospital amid conta
What I don't like about this is that not only are patients fleeing the hospital, and sick people are afraid to go to the hospital for fear they will get it, people who live in the affected community are leaving and going to other areas, thus increasing chances for it to spread to other areas of the country, or even to another country, though that is less likely. Treyfish has been posting a lot on this over at GLP. The CDC is over there as well as WHO (in Uganda that is, not over at GLP lol.)
The origin of the outbreak had not yet been confirmed, but 18 of the 20 cases are understood to be linked to one family.
Question: Where does it come from, one case out of the blue, then others get it; it is very contagious (though so far not airborne, thank God!) But where does it hide? Where is that original source?

Re: Uganda Ebola outbreak: patients flee hospital amid conta
Here's what I've found on sources and reservoirs for ebola: Traces of EBOV (a variant of ebola) were detected in the carcasses of gorillas and chimpanzees during outbreaks in 2001 and 2003, which later became the source of human infections. However, the high lethality from infection in these species makes them unlikely as a natural reservoir.[30] Bats are considered the most likely candidate. (as a reservoir) [32] Bats were known to reside in the cotton factory in which the index cases for the 1976 and 1979 outbreaks were employed, and they have also been implicated in Marburg virus infections in 1975 and 1980. Bats drop partially eaten fruits and pulp, then terrestrial mammals such as gorillas and duikers feed on these fallen fruits. This chain of events forms a possible indirect means of transmission from the natural host to animal populations, which have led to research towards viral shedding in the saliva of bats. The absence of clinical signs in these bats is characteristic of a reservoir species. Infectious ebolaviruses have not yet been isolated from any nonhuman animal. Transmission between natural reservoirs and humans are rare, and outbreaks are usually traceable to a single index case where an individual has handled the carcass of gorilla, chimpanzee, or duiker.[37] The virus then spreads person-to-person, especially within families, hospitals, and during some mortuary rituals where contact among individuals becomes more likely.[38] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebola_virus_disease

Ebola outbreak suspected among Uganda prisoners From David McKenzie, CNN updated 4:54 PM EDT, Thu August 2, 2012
Kagadi, Uganda (CNN) -- The hospital at the center of an Ebola outbreak in Uganda is now dealing with 30 suspected cases, including five from Kibaale prison, Dr. Dan Kyamanywa said Thursday. Three patients at Kagadi hospital have been confirmed as having the virus, said Kyamanywa, a district health officer. Doctors are now testing the suspected cases urgently so they can separate confirmed cases from those who do not have the disease, Doctors Without Borders said. Suspected cases are still trickling into the hospital, Kyamanywa said. At least 16 people have died in the current outbreak. The five prisoners have been showing Ebola-like symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and fever, the doctor said. "We do expect the number of suspected cases to increase," he said. "It's important to break transmission and reduce the number of contacts that suspected cases have." There is a fear that the outbreak will spread to the capital, but it is unlikely, he said. Many patients fled Kagadi hospital when Ebola was confirmed, he said, and the hospital is struggling to respond to all the call-outs to suspected cases.

Oct. 2 re: Democratic Republic of Congo:
An outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may have killed up to 36 people, out of 81 suspected cases, according to a new death toll released by the Health Ministry on Monday [1 Oct 2012]. The Ministry said that 20 confirmed cases have been recorded, as well as 32 likely and 29 suspected as of Sat 29 Sep 2012.
They said that among the 36 deaths, 10 were confirmed to have been a direct result of the killer virus. They also said that the number of people under observation had risen to 216 since the outbreak was first reported in mid-August [2012] in the eastern Orientale province of the DRC. The vast majority of cases were reported in and around the town of Isiro.
DR Congo has recorded 8 outbreaks of Ebola, one of the world's most virulent diseases, since the virus was first reported near a river that gave it its name in 1976.

DR of the Congo is still finding cases per ProMed Mail. Though they believe the peak of the outbreak is over, there are still isolated cases. The worst hit are health care workers, especially before strict precautions were put in place, including Doctors Without Borders. One problem is that the sick don't want to go to the hospital thus infecting others.

The outbreak in Uganda had been declared "over" but new cases are now showing up again. EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE - UGANDA (27): (LUWEERO) FAMILY DEATHS ********************************************************** A ProMED-mail post http://www.promedmail.orgAt least 3 people are confirmed to have died from Ebola virus disease since last month [October 2012], the Health Ministry has said. All of the 3 victims were members of the same family in Kakute sub-county, Sambu Parish, [and?] Nyimbwa sub-county[?]. snip The acting director general of health services, Dr Dennis Lwamafa, said health experts were also tracing at least 15 suspected cases in different parts of the country. This current Ebola virus disease outbreak comes barely 2 months after the country was declared Ebola virus-free. The Health Ministry has dispatched a team of experts to assess the situation in Luweero, and plans are under way to create isolation centres at Nyimbywa Health Centre IV and Bombo Hospital. Dr Miriam Nanyunja, the WHO disease prevention and control advisor, said a team of health experts had arrived to boost efforts to contain the epidemic.
