Post Global Crisis: Mental Depression - A Powerful Silent Killer
This is a subject close to my heart - to many suffering this affliction and I believe there to be much more than what is spellt-out in this article....

Mental Depression - A Powerful Silent Killer

"“If you should speak to anyone affected by a mental illness, the chances are that you will hear stories of hidden suffering, shame, and discrimination in nearly every sector of their lives,”" says Vikram Patel, co-director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

It's a real danger. It's a global crisis because it affects more than 350 million people around the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

A mental illness called depression has a long history. In fact, it has been around as long as mankind itself.

People feel that they are depressed and most of them don't know why. The illness, more pervasive in women than men, is the leading cause of disability and major contributor to the global burden of disease.

Depression's frightening increase is becoming a subject of great concern. According to researchers, its impact is bigger than cancer.
The burden of mental illness and addictions is more than 1.5 times that of all cancers, a new report suggests.

Dedicated to mental health and family well-being, Vikram Patel says that "depression is a global crisis not only because it is common and universal, but because the vast majority of affected people suffer in silence or receive inappropriate care.

We need to move firmly beyond the misinformed views that depression is a “psychiatric invention” to investing more on understanding its nature, finding more accurate ways of distinguishing when a person with the condition may benefit from medical care, and improving access to the full range of treatments (medicines and psychosocial) for such persons."

"Depression is, like all non-communicable diseases, a physiologically expressed condition which is profoundly influenced by our social and cultural environments." In his video, Vikram Patel explains the danger of the disease that is capable to ruin a single life of a person and its family.

In wealthy nations, just half receive appropriate care, but in developing countries, close to 90 percent go untreated because psychiatrists are in such short supply. Vikram Patel outlines a highly promising approach -- training members of communities to give mental health interventions, empowering ordinary people to care for others.

Have you ever tried to help a friend with serious depression problem?

If not, you are most certainly unaware what this mental illness really is, what it means.

On the other side, how can you know what is taking place inside the mind of a depressed person - if you're not a professional (a psychiatrist or psychologist)?

People can unknowingly dismiss mental illnesses because it's very difficult to find the boundary between “normal sadness” or the despair of everyday life - that comes and goes and “clinical depression”.

Is depression a real disorder? Does it really occur in non-western settings? How do we distinguish depression as an illness from the so-called "feeling blue"?

"People find it very difficult to know what they are supposed to do when a friend or colleague says they have a mental health problem," said Sophie Corlett, director of external relations at mental health charity MIND.

"They see it as mysterious, different and requiring a specialised response but actually all people often need is a friendly face, people around them, carrying on making suggestions of things to do and being included. There is also a stigma that people with mental health problems are less capable, less interesting, less intelligent and even dangerous."

Problem has existed for a very long time. It was often ignored or misdiagnosed.
Through the 19th and 20th centuries, physical and mental health care made a remarkable progress and a variety of new technologies can be used to successful treatment of suffering people.

But first, it's important to reach those who are suffering. The vast majority of affected people suffer in silence or receive inappropriate care.

Post Re: Global Crisis: Mental Depression - A Powerful Silent Kil
I was diagnosed with clinical depression and PTSD after the death of my parents. What should have been "normal" grief became something much, much more.

I am blessed that my body finally took over after a year and a half with 2-3 hours of sleep and I dropped my basket (very publicly I might add) and got the help I sorely needed.

A great therapist, some meds to help me sleep, an anti-depressant to increase the seratonin levels in my brain and twelve weeks of therapy set me to rights.

One of my best friends was hospitalized Saturday morning at 2:30 AM for clinical depression. She has been struggling with no sleep, depression and the weight of the world on her shoulders for a long, long time.

She dropped her basket, too, and now is receiving the help she sorely needs.

That's right you either drop your basket or end up with Schizoeffective disorder which my poor mother has.

Depression

Poor appetite
Weight loss or gain
Changes in sleeping patterns (sleeping very little or a lot)
Agitation (excessive restlessness)
Lack of energy
Loss of interest in usual activities
Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
Guilt or self-blame
Inability to think or concentrate
Thoughts of death or suicide

Mania

Increased activity, including work, social and sexual activity
Increased and/or rapid talking
Rapid or racing thoughts
Little need for sleep
Agitation
Inflated self-esteem
Distractibility
Self-destructive or dangerous behavior (such as going on spending sprees, driving recklessly or having unsafe sex)

Schizophrenia

Delusions (strange beliefs that are not based in reality and that the person refuses to give up, even when presented with factual information)
Hallucinations (the perception of sensations that aren't real, such as hearing voices)
Disorganized thinking
Odd or unusual behavior
Slow movements or total immobility
Lack of emotion in facial expression and speech
Poor motivation
Problems with speech and communication

It's a Mixture of these Three (3) Illnesses If you think you have the weight of the world on your shoulders THINK AGAIN think of what people Like myself and others go through DAY IN, DAY OUT, NIGHT IN, NIGHT OUT

Twenty four seven, No rest for the wicked!. At least BlueBonnet you parents Died so you had Closure as sad as that is and I'm not trying to sound cruel. Think of the Rut I'm in I get NO PEACE always the weird questions that I have to sit there and make up answers not to mention the weird Binges she goes on I am in HELL. (I am her Carer)

Plus to top it off My sister and HER problems and she plays up as well.

and *Poor Old Peter* does everything and his problems and desires are shoved to the sidelines with a "SOMEDAY when I'm dead and buried" attached to them.

I've learned to SHUT MY EMOTIONS OFF and JUST PLOUGH RIGHT THROUGH IT and then PUT ON a Smiley happy face when I got outside (Of which is NEVER unless I'm doing Errands for Mother)
