Post Why are Americans getting sick?
Why are Americans getting sick?

Americans eat a diet of over 50% processed food, which relies heavily on animal products. It is a diet that is depleted of nutrition and contains few phytonutrients.

When you give the body what it needs, it naturally returns to a state of health.

It's really not that complicated...

Role of Phytonutrients in Good Nutrition

The term "phytonutrient" is applied to those plant compounds that promote better health, although they are not absolutely essential to human health.

The crucial role of fresh, whole plants in human nutrition is undisputed.

Worldwide research has confirmed that diets rich in plants can lead to optimal health.
Scientists know that plants improve health at least partially because of the thousands of plant chemicals or compounds (phytonutrients) supplied in a plant-rich diet.

Key Functions

Different plant varieties produce different kinds of phytonutrients.

The level of phytonutrients within any given plant varies, depending on the species of plant, the soil conditions and many other environmental factors. Unlike vitamins and minerals, phytonutrients are not classified as essential; yet they appear to have many benefits for our overall health, both in general and for specific conditions.

Food Sources

Plant-based food sources, including brightly-colored fruits and vegetables

Think "color," because different phytonutrients exist in fruits and vegetables of varying colors.

Usage

No specific recommendations exist at this time for most or all phytonutrients. A general recommendation is to consume five different-colored fruits and vegetables daily to benefit from a variety of many different phytonutrients.
Safety Evidence

No standard levels of phytonutrient intake have been established; therefore, no over-consumption levels have been published by leading health authorities.

Thanks, Sky.

I was at the grocery store this weekend. I usually shop for advertised specials (as do most Americans), however, in the past month I have not been able to take advantage of these specials.

Why?

They are 100% processed foods. Yep, buy some pre-frozen, premade meat balls, get free spaghetti sauce, free spaghetti, free preshredded Parmesan cheese, and free frozen garlic bread. Total savings? $7.69.

:gah

Note there are no vegetables, salads, etc. in the meal deal.

This has been going on for over a month.

Another freebie was buy Oscar Meyer Ham luncheon meat, processed cheese slices and get free bread, free chips, and free mayo. :roll

Again, no fresh fruits or vegetables. Total savings? $3.20

So that is about $11 and some change in total grocery savings but NO fruits or vegetables.

If you have a typical American family where both parents work with kids - what would you do?

Sigh!
