Re: Vanity gives way to Stupid
Angelina Jolie has a genetic mutation that no amount of nutrition will ever cure or fix.
Her mother died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56 which is exactly why she decided to be tested for the BRAC-1/2 genetic mutation.
Her breast cancer risk was 87%.
She must still deal with her 50%+ risk for ovarian cancer. This will entail removal of her ovaries and, possibly, her uterus.
The only dietary intervention that is generally accepted as preventing breast cancer in BRCA mutation carriers is minimizing consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The article above seems to be addressing normal breast cancer risk. The nutritional advice is sound for women without the BRAC-1/2 genetic mutation.
This sounds radical (removing one's breast
tissue when no disease is apparent) and it is. It is a radical way to save one's life due to the genetic mutation.
Many, many times breast cancer is found in the removed tissue during pathological examination post-surgery. Cancer that was never detected by mammography and other tests.
One of the interesting evolutionary traits for the BRAC mutation is a higher fertility rate among women with the mutation even though they do not live as long as women without the mutation.
Interestingly enough, Ashkenazi Jews have the highest incidence of this mutation - about 1 in 40.
Angelina Jolie's father is a practicing Jew, however, her mother was not.
Given the high risk she faced for both breast and ovarian cancer, it could very well be that
both her parents carried the BRAC mutation.
How very sad, indeed.
