Post Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever
I started this thread on another forum, and am bringing brief excerpts here so we can get the big picture of this disease, which has now affected one of our troops.

CRIMEAN-CONGO HEMORRHAGIC FEVER - TAJIKISTAN: (TURSUNZODA DISTRICT)

Deaths from CCHF in Tajikistan (Gursunzadevskiy Region)

A total of 3 people out of 5 infected with CCHF virus died in the
Gursunzadevskiy Region .... 26 people have been hospitalized and are under medical
supervision on of CCHF virus infection in the Gursunzadevckiy Region.
A total of 44 individuals identified as contacts, including 24 health care
workers, are being monitored.

Another case of CCHF recorded in Kizilordinskaya oblast, Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan Today reports that a 4th case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
(CCHF) has been registered in the Kizilordinskaya Oblast according to the
regional public heath department.

The Kazakhstan Ministry of Health has denied reports emanating from
Russian media sources concerning an emergency situation in Kazakhstan
due to an outbreak of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). The
Russian press has reported that an emergency situation has been
declared following an outbreak of CCHF in Kazakhstan. The Ministry of
Health has denied that any emergency situation exists, but have
confirmed that that there are 2 new CCHF cases in South Kazakhstan.
....In total 22 people have contracted CCHF infection in Kazakhstan, including 8 cases with fatal
outcome.

..... (a) deadly disease is on the march in central Anatolia: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF),
which is spread by ticks and has already killed more than 50 people this
year [2009].

News of the rising death toll has alerted the public. "CCHF is more
dangerous than swine flu," a headline in a Turkish newspaper said recently.

According to official figures released last week, 53 people have died from
CCHF since January [2009]. There have been more than 3000 cases since the
disease 1st appeared in Turkey in 2002, with at least 208 deaths. There
were 63 fatal cases last year [2008] statistics posted on the website of
the health ministry in Ankara show.

[Abattoir] workers diagnosed with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Currently 6 slaughter workers of "Tappe Salam" of Mashhad have been
admitted to the hospital due to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever
virus infection.

Humans who become infected with CCHF acquire the virus from direct
contact with blood or other infected tissues from livestock during
this time, or they may become infected from a tick bite.
The mortality rate from CCHF is approximately 30 percent, with death
occurring in the 2nd week of illness. In those patients who recover,
improvement generally begins on the 9th or 10th day after the onset of illness.

The National Center of Disease Control says the 1st case of the
lethal virus -- Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) -- has been
confirmed in Georgia. The health condition of the 31-year-old man
infected by the virus is very poor. He has been connected to a
breathing apparatus in the resuscitation department of the Hospital
of Tbilisi infectious diseases hospital. .... In case of infection, the probability of the patient's death is 60
percent.

One patient tests negative for CCHF and another tests positive

He said that the PIMS administration had already placed the hospital
under emergency and established an isolation ward for treatment of
swine flu and CCHF patients. Earlier, on Friday [25 Sep 2009], a 58-year-old resident of Abottabad
was admitted to the PIMS bleeding from his nose, eyes, and other
parts of body. After laboratory test, he was confirmed as a case of
CCHF.

Epidemic Hazard - Asia - Pakistan
A 32-year-old Pakistani, Abdul Ali Mian, who had been working as a driver in Saudi Arabia, returned to Islamabad on Friday, with symptoms of Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF). The patient, has been moved to the isolation ward, where barrier nursing protocols are strictly being adhered to.
