Another city student gets flu vaccine by mistake: Dept. of Ed. officials

Officials admitted on Friday that a third student was mistakenly given the swine flu vaccine - an error the school nurses union blamed on the city.

"Nurses are not getting the support they need," said Judith Arroyo, president of Local 436, District Council 37, adding that the union had warned of problems.

"We don't like it when we're right, because usually when we're right someone does get hurt somewhere along the way."

City officials countered that nurses have received "excellent support."

"The department has been doing a tremendous job," said Dr. Jane Zucker, assistant commissioner of immunization. "Twenty-five hundred have already been vaccinated."

Three children have received the H1N1 vaccine without parental permission - including a kid at Public School 8 on Staten Island - since the in-school program began.

City officials recommend all students get the vaccine since swine flu has proved particularly deadly for young people. The feds yesterday announced the deaths of 19 more children nationwide - the largest increase in a single week since the epidemic began.

Mexico: "The vaccine is not a panacea"
Via Xinhua, some discouraging news: Mexican official: A/H1N1 vaccine offers only 60% protection. Excerpt:

The million doses of vaccine against A/H1N1 flu that Mexican authorities will begin applying in December will only have 60 percent effectiveness, a top health ministry official told Mexican media on Monday.

Those vaccinated will have to maintain hand washing and what the government called "polite sneezing," said Alejandro Macias Fernandez, who heads the Health Ministry's committee for fighting A/H1N1 flu.

He also recommended the cleaning of shared objects and visits to doctors at the first sign of illness.

"The vaccine is not a panacea. It is one more mitigation strategy out of a list that includes washing hands, covering with the forearm when coughing or sneezing, avoiding spitting and using a handkerchief," he said.

Canada: Board members at seven hospitals jump queue
Via The Star: Board members at seven hospitals jump queue. Excerpt:

At least seven Toronto hospitals have given preferential access to scarce H1N1 vaccines to their boards of governors.

Hospitals where board members jumped the queue include Mount Sinai, St. Michael's, Sunnybrook, Bridgepoint and the University Health Network's three hospitals.

Ontario's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Arlene King, stipulated Friday that hospital board members are not health-care workers and not entitled to the shot unless they suffer from a pre-existing medical condition.

In a letter to the Ontario Medical Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the College of Family Physicians obtained by the Star, King reminded them "of the importance of following this priority group list since the province's supply of pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine is limited at this time."

The chief microbiologist at Mount Sinai, Dr. Don Low, apologized for the controversy. Board members there include Gerald Schwartz, head of Onex Corp., and Lawrence Tanenbaum, chair of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. It is not known which board members received the vaccinations.

"I'm sorry this has happened. At the time, it seemed like the right thing to do," Low said, noting that polls on Oct. 26, when the vaccinations took place, indicated most Ontarians didn't even want the shot.

And they also vaccinated the Major Sports Teams here too, Hockey Basketball, Soccer (football to our UK Friends) ya know the ones that can still generate BIG BUCKS in one night etc...

According to the media Canada is only suppose to be vaccinating the High Risk Folks, pregnant women, first responders and children...

What they fail to tell you is that those few connected individuals with Vast amounts of MONEY and who seem to be connected to those few connected indiviuals are getting the FIRST shots as has been demonstrated here in Canada.

I know this is going to sound in-humane but I hope they are the first to drop dead of complications from this vaccine as punishment to their greed...

US: H1N1 vaccine clinic causes frenzy in San Jose
Via abc7news.com: H1N1 vaccine clinic causes frenzy in San Jose. Excerpt:

Aside from the national health care issue, Americans are paying attention to another health issue, vaccinations for the H1N1 flu virus. Free flu shots and nasal spray were given out at health clinics around the Bay Area Saturday and it caused a bit of a frenzy.

A free clinic at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose was supposed to have ended at 3:30 Saturday. But, there were still a lot of people in line at 4 p.m. with officials telling ABC7 vaccinations would continue until 5:00 or 5:30 p.m.

It was the largest availability of free swine flu vaccine in the county. The line for the coveted H1N1 vaccine stretched for blocks and took hours to get through.

"We got here around 8:30. So, it's been a long wait," Eddie Northrup of San Jose told ABC7.

The first people lined up at 3:00 a.m.

Queens Schoolchildren Complain After Swine Flu Shots

Updated: Monday, 09 Nov 2009, 10:33 PM EST
Published : Monday, 09 Nov 2009, 10:06 PM EST

MYFOXNY.COM - It was a panicky scene at P.S. 124 in South Ozone Park, Queens, Monday when some students complained of headaches after getting the swine flu vaccination.

After one or two children said they felt sick, apparently more children swamped the nurse's office, officials said.

The Health Department told Fox 5 that the school called 911 in an abundance of caution. Three children were taken to Jamaica Hospital for headaches, dizziness, and nausea. One of the children complaining of symptoms hadn't even gotten the vaccine.

However, school and health officials point out that it is not uncommon for people to have minor reactions to any vaccination, including the swine flu shot.

New York Clinics See Few Crowds for Free Vaccine

By ERIC KONIGSBERG
Published: November 8, 2009

Perhaps it was fear of crowds that kept the crowds away on Sunday from the clinics offering free swine flu vaccinations to schoolchildren. Or, maybe, as some of the few who did show up suggested, the small numbers could be attributed to wariness about the new vaccine or a lack of knowledge about the clinics.

Whatever the reason, the seven clinics across the city were, depending on how you looked at it, puzzlingly underused or puzzlingly overprepared.

While the city’s health commissioner, Dr. Thomas A. Farley, said the clinics had the staff and enough vaccine to accommodate about 500 middle- and high-school students per clinic per hour — or as many as 31,500 vaccinations a day — a department spokeswoman put the total vaccinations administered on Saturday at 1,701.

Canada: Unadjuvanted flu vaccine approved for wider use
Via the Globe and Mail, a Caroline Alphonso report: Unadjuvanted flu vaccine approved for wider use. Excerpt;

A made-in-Canada adjuvant-free H1N1 vaccine has been approved for both pregnant women and healthy Canadians between the ages of 10 and 64.

The unadjuvanted vaccine was previously only intended for pregnant women, but federal health officials said today that it will also be offered to those with healthy immune systems.

It is still recommended that adults with chronic conditions, children 6 months to 9 years old and those over 65 years receive the adjuvanted vaccine, which contains an immune-boosting additive.

Health Canada officials said today they have approved the unadjuvated vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline at its plants in Ste-Foy, Que. Canada has ordered 1.8 million doses of unadjuvanted vaccine from GSK, and some of it has already arrived at provincial and territorial warehouses.

China investigates deaths after H1N1 shots
Via Time.com: China Investigates Deaths After Swine Flu Shot. Excerpt:

Chinese health officials reported on Friday the first deaths in people who received the H1N1 vaccine.

The Ministry of Health announced that the two people, including one teacher from Hunan province, died hours after receiving their inoculations. Since September, when the Ministry began its H1N1 immunization program, 12 million Chinese have received the pandemic flu shot.

A preliminary autopsy revealed that the teacher died of an apparent heart attack while playing basketball, and a Ministry spokesperson told the China Daily newspaper that the death was "a coincidental medical incident" and not related to the vaccine. No details on the second victim have been released so far.

As they conduct an autopsy investigation into the second death, Chinese health officials have pulled all vaccines manufactured in the same batch used to inoculate the teacher.

Although the H1N1 vaccine has been rigorously tested and vetted for safety, :nono no inoculation can be considered 100% safe and may cause adverse events, including death, in some people.

Taking an aggressive approach to the pandemic flu, back in June the Chinese government asked 11 biotech companies to develop a pandemic H1N1 vaccine. Beijing-based Sinovac succeeded in developing the world's first approved swine flu shot.

The company raced to conduct clinical trials, and was the first to report that a single dose of vaccine, instead of the two doses that most flu experts had believed would be necessary, was sufficient to protect against 2009 H1N1. In early September, China became the first country to begin swine flu inoculations.

Canada: Hundreds of doses of expired flu vaccine thrown away :gah

Via the Globe and Mail, a report from The Canadian Press: Hundreds of doses of expired flu vaccine thrown away. Excerpt:

Some health authorities across the country have tossed out hundreds of doses of the swine flu vaccine because of miscalculations over how many of the time-sensitive dosages are needed at community clinics.

Officials at some of the larger health districts, including Toronto and Halifax, say they have thrown out about one per cent of the total vaccine they've administered because of the dosages' 24-hour shelf life.

In Toronto, that means close to 500 doses of the adjuvanted vaccine have been disposed of even as people remain shut out of the priority groups entitled to receive the shot.

“We reconstitute as much vaccine as we think we're going to need, but sometimes our numbers are a wee bit off,” said Ameeta Mathur, manager of the vaccine program for Toronto Public Health. “Once it's in the syringe from the vial and it's not used, we have to dispose of it.”

Mathur said there is little information on the stability of the vaccine once it has been reconstituted and drawn into a syringe. Once the solution is in the syringe, she said it can't be put back in the vial nor can they use syringes the next day because of the lack of data on the vaccine's stability.

The vaccine is reconstituted with the adjuvant, an additive that boosts one's response to the serum, and is then ready to be injected.

But the clock starts ticking on the dose 24 hours after that.

Let's keep an eye on this for reactions to the vaccination in an isolated population. I sure hope they aren't using the nasal spray.

Canada: Nunavut vaccine blitz could 'wave H1N1 goodbye': medical officer
Via CBCnews.ca, a report from the Arctic: Nunavut vaccine blitz could 'wave H1N1 goodbye': medical officer. Excerpt:

Nunavut might avoid a second wave of the swine flu pandemic now that 60 per cent of its population has been vaccinated, according to the territory's top health officials.

Over a 16-day period this month, more than 18,000 Nunavummiut were vaccinated by teams of nurses that travelled to all of the territory's 25 communities.

The immunization campaign, the largest public health effort in Nunavut's history, may have helped turn the tide on H1N1 in the territory, chief medical officer Dr. Isaac Sobol said Wednesday.

"I like to think that we can wave H1N1 goodbye," Sobol told reporters in Iqaluit.

Sobol said there have been only a handful of swine flu cases since September — a contrast to the more than 500 mostly mild cases reported in Nunavut this past spring and summer.

While Sobol said he believes Nunavut could avoid a second swine flu wave, he added that nothing is for certain.

"We're still vulnerable," he said.

 Re: HINI Vaccine
Branswell: What to do with Canada's surplus vaccine
Via Canoe.ca, a report from The Canadian Press by Helen Branswell: Feds expecting millions of unused H1N1 vaccines. Excerpt:

Up until now, Canadian authorities have steadfastly refused to discuss what they might do with the excess vaccine, saying they wanted to ensure Canada’s needs were being met before crossing that bridge.

That left the country in the unusual position of being odd-man-out of an international agreement brokered by U.S. President Barack Obama’s White House to donate vaccine to the World Health Organization.

The U.S. and the governments of 10 other vaccine-purchasing countries promised to give the WHO 10 per cent of their supplies on an ongoing basis for redistribution to developing countries that have been unable to buy pandemic vaccine.

However, vaccine production problems have kept at least some of those countries from fulfilling their promises to date.

The WHO, which has also been promised more than 150 million doses by four vaccine manufacturers, hopes to start shipping vaccine to recipient countries soon.

The Canadian spokesperson said it’s not yet clear what form Canada’s donation would take.

“We’re looking at our options currently,” the source said. “Within a couple of weeks we should come to some sort of resolution of where we’re going with our international ... contributions.”

There are a couple of options. The federal government could give the WHO a financial contribution, something the agency needs to cover the costs of distributing the vaccine. Or it could divert some of the country’s unneeded vaccine doses to the Geneva-based agency.

http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/2009 ... ccine.html

I keep reading of the scarcity of the vaccine, that it didn't grow in eggs efficiently or quickly, that people were standing in long lines because there wasn't enough vaccine and they wanted to be sure they got their shot - and now this! What to do with EXCESS vaccine. WTH is going on? This makes me think that the articles saying that the whole vaccine story is being manipulated to make people anxious about the lack of vaccine and therefore eager to get the shot are on the money.

..."people were standing in long lines"....

there's something that has bothered me about the whole media blizt about how much in demand this vax has been.

they show these outragiously long lines of ppl obviously waiting to get somewhere. most often video shot from above, from a helicopter most likely.

....but i've yet to see on any of these video shots anything that positively identifies that the line we see is waiting for the h1n1 vax.

they could of been lines to the opening of twilight.... Tickets to michael jackson's funeral...Or lines to obtain free govt cheese.....

maybe a bit tinfoilish...but just sayin. :yamon
