Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- Health officials are reminding Americans that the H1N1 flu is still around and causing serious illness, particularly in the Southeast.

Three states -- Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina -- are reporting "regional" flu activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Puerto Rico and eight other states -- Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Hawaii and New Mexico -- are reporting "local" flu activity.

CDC officials said one state in particular is seeing more activity than it had since October. "The situation in Georgia is critical," Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, told reporters in a media briefing on Monday.

Schuchat said Georgia had more laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 than any other state for the third week in a row. According to the Georgia Department of Community Health, 190 people were hospitalized in the state because of H1N1 between February 24 and March 16. Eighty Georgians were hospitalized with H1N1 in the first week of March. The last time that many people were hospitalized for H1N1 in Georgia was at the end of September.

"The preliminary information is that the hospitalizations are occurring in adults, not in young children, and they're occurring in people with chronic health conditions," Schuchat said.

"We're seeing higher rates of disease in adults who have chronic conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, asthma, COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] and other lung illnesses," said Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, who participated in a CDC press conference for the first time. She reiterated a common theme heard from CDC and other health officials since the H1N1 flu virus emerged nearly a year ago: "Vaccination is the single best protection against H1N1."

So far, an estimated 60 million Americans have been infected with H1N1, 265,000 have been hospitalized and 12,000 have died from the virus, according to Benjamin and Schuchat.

While 12,000 H1N1 deaths is a lower than the average 36,000 deaths seen from seasonal flu annually, 90 percent of the H1N1 deaths occurred in people under age 65. "That's many more deaths in a particular year among young people than we usually see with seasonal flu," Schuchat said.

According to the surgeon general, there is plenty of H1N1 vaccine available. She said 121 million doses of H1N1 vaccine have been made available.

She and the CDC encourage people to "take advantage of the increased supply to protect them and protect their loved ones."

She also pointed out that minority groups need be reminded of the importance of getting vaccinated because they experience higher rates of some chronic illnesses, which make them vulnerable to serious infection from this flu virus.

The CDC can't explain why there is an increase in H1N1 cases at the moment. Schuchat told reporters she's less concerned about a big outbreak or big spike in illness, but rather that she's "concerned about the people who will suffer needlessly because there is vaccine available and people, particularly ones with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and pregnancy will need to take advantage of the vaccine."

Just a ploy to sell the stock piles of the Vaxine

Agreed, L, and did you notice who they are targeting for the vaccine? Minorities. I dread the day when the real pandemic surfaces and we find that those vaccinated against H1N1 are more likely to be stricken hard. I would also like to see the data on the number of people infected who had been vaccinated.

You gotta question the number of people who have been sick and had the vaccine compared to those who didn't get the vaccine and are not getting repeated eposides of flu like illnesses. Then compare them to people who got the flu last spring and had repeated relaspes, though mild afterwards.

In our family we had it in March of 2009 and then again in May and July. Then we were all vaccinated for both in Oct, and got sick again this Feb, yet there was no regular flu season? I even had Dr ask if we were having any issues with after effects???

We don't normally get sick, hubby and I haven't had a case of flu for years until last year and this year........

I had posted elsewhere about the genetics of the Swine Flu and how closely it is connected genetically with the 1918 Pandemic. Could it be you and yours have no natural immunity to the 1918 strain?

Don't know how old ya'll are - but this could very well be the case.

In our case, East Texas and I both have relatives who lived through the 1918 pandemic. Both my parents had it in 1957 (so I was exposed and may have had a slight case then) and East Texas had it then as well. Sooo....

Knock wood - neither of us has caught it (yet). East Texas was vaccinated last Fall but I have not been vaccinated specifically for Swine Flu - just regular flu.
