Thanks, L, those are fantastic. Look at all the lightning! I read a description of how it is formed by the volcano, but I forget.

i read that is caused from static electricity. knowing a little about it...sounds plausable to me.

Things are getting interesting again. Note swarm of earthquakes on Iceland today!

i'm not even gonna try posting a pic, but it looks like the volcano has also developed additional side vents.

Thanks, Gen, for keeping an eye on this! :clap

This is not good - not good at all! Some MSM is now saying the ash cloud could linger all summer and has broken up into about 4 separate clouds over Europe and the Atlantic.

If Katla blows :scared :dunno

Can you imagine what would happen if Katla blew her top just as a major hurricane made its way up the Atlantic seaboard or curved toward the UK?

Nightmares! :whistle

Volcanic ash cloud disrupts flightsMay 10, 2010 -- Updated 1513 GMT (2313 HKT)

European flights continued to experience delays Monday because of ash from an Icelandic volcano.

UK airport authority: Transatlantic flights facing rerouting and delays
Volcanic ash reduces visibility, can lead to engine failure

(CNN) -- Ash from an Icelandic volcano is continuing to affect European flights on Monday, delaying transatlantic aircraft and threatening flights over parts of Ireland and Portugal.

Eurocontrol, the agency that manages European air travel, said: "During the afternoon, areas of higher ash concentration could move in a north-easterly direction from the Atlantic into the Iberian Peninsula."
Ryanair, the budget airline, canceled 18 flights on Monday as it expected the airspace surrounding Kerry airport in the southwest of Ireland and Faro airport in Portugal to be affected by the ash cloud.

Ryanair said in a statement on its Web site: "Passengers are strongly recommended to check their flight status before they go to the airport."

Eurocontrol said much of the high-concentration ash cloud over continental Europe had dispersed and that despite the delays, all European airports were open on Monday afternoon.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority said that transatlantic flights were still rerouting around ash that was lying between 20,000 to 35,000 feet in the atmosphere.

A CAA spokesman told CNN: "The ash cloud is slowly disappearing, it's descending and dispersing, there isn't one big cloud... it's ash in the air over a very large area. Transatlantic flights are rerouting around it, causing delays."

Eurocontrol said it expected approximately 28,500 flights within the European area, which is about 500 below average for a Monday at this time of year.

Italian airports in Milan, Pisa and Florence as well as six airports in Scotland were closed over the weekend because of the ash cloud.

Volcanic ash can be a serious hazard to aircraft, reducing visibility, damaging flight controls and ultimately causing jet engines to fail.

The problems began in mid-April, when the volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland erupted and sent a cloud of ash into the atmosphere, closing most of Europe's airspace for six days.

Volcanic ash closes airports in England, IrelandBy the CNN Wire Staff
May 16, 2010 6:27 a.m. EDT

London, England (CNN) -- Airports in Manchester and Liverpool closed Sunday as a cloud of ash from a volcano in Iceland moved east into England, British air traffic controllers announced.

The ash cloud is also causing delays in Ireland. Belfast International, Belfast Harbour and Ronaldsway airports were closed from 7 a.m. (2 a.m. ET) until 1 p.m. ( 8 a.m. ET) Sunday. Dublin and Shannon airports will remain open.

London airports are not currently affected. However, the ash may force more airports to close again next week, the Department of Transport said Saturday.

If the volcano continues to erupt at current levels and weather conditions prevail, air travel in Britain could be disrupted between Sunday and Tuesday.

"The government is carefully monitoring this situation and the safety of passengers will remain our paramount concern," said UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond.

The department said predictions remain fluid, urging passengers to check with airlines before taking any action.

British Airways said it would notify passengers of potential disruptions on its website.

"There is a distinct possibility of some disruption from the ash cloud over the southeast of England, but it is too early to tell if this will extend as far as Heathrow or Gatwick yet," a BA spokesman told CNN.

Volcanic ash had forced the closing of Iceland's main airport Friday, but it reopened at midnight and operated normally on Saturday.

Earlier in the week, traffic was shut down in airports from central Spain to the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa.

The problems began in mid-April, when the volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland erupted and sent a cloud of ash into the atmosphere, disrupting international travel for several days.

Volcanic ash can be a serious hazard to aircraft, reducing visibility, damaging flight controls and ultimately causing jet engines to fail.

British ministers agreed Saturday that five-day ash-prediction charts would now be made available to airlines, other transport providers and the public on the Met Office website. Previously, only 18-hour forecasts had been available. :hmm

Flight chaos volcano stops spewing ash

A picture taken by an Icelandic test flight over the volcano on Saturday 22nd May shows less ash and more steam being ejected.
London, England (CNN) -- The Icelandic volcano that has been disrupting thousands of flights with its ash plume has significantly reduced in activity, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

No ash was detected from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano on Sunday in a flight over the crater by Icelandic scientists.

Jonsson Thorsteinn, an Icelandic Met Office forecaster, told CNN: "The volcano appears to be dormant, the activity has been going down for the last two days and at the moment there is nothing coming out... no magma."

Measurements with a heat camera from the test flight indicated that the temperature at the crater was just under 100°C, confirming that the volcano was now spouting steam instead of ash, Thorsteinn said.

Steinunn Jakobsdottir, a geophysicist with the Icelandic Met Office, told CNN: "Seismic activity is down, there is still some background rumbling but it is much calmer."

Jakobsdottir said the Sunday test flight data found that the "volcanic tremor is still decreasing and is approaching the level it had before the eruption."

However, scientists warn that the volcano could erupt again and that it was impossible to predict when.

"There is still something going on inside, some tremors, it is possible it could erupt again, but when is a question nobody can answer," said Jonsson Thorsteinn.
