Re: Recent large earthquakes
Quakes damage many Solomon Islands homes 7.2 magnitude tremor triggers tsunami; no initial reports of injuries Reuters updated 9:20 p.m. CT, Sun., Jan. 3, 2010 CANBERRA - Two major earthquakes rocked the Solomon Islands on Monday, destroying or damaging scores of homes and unleashing a tsunami that crashed ashore. Initial reports said no one was seriously hurt. One temblor registered a 7.2 magnitude and the South Pacific nation's National Disaster Management Office said reports of widespread damage were beginning to filter in late Monday. The tremors were centered beneath the ocean floor near the town of Gizo, which was badly damaged in April 2007 when a 8.1-magnitude quake sent a tsunami crashing into the coast, killing more than 50 people. Another tsunami devastated a village on Rendova Island, some 188 miles from the capital Honiara, on Monday, disaster management official Loti Yates told The Associated Press. "One report from police was that one village was hit by a 6 to 10 foot wall of sea water," Yates said. "It was a total inundation police saw in a fly over." Rendova is home to about 3,600 people. Yates said in Baniata village on Rendova's coast 16 houses were destroyed and 32 damaged by the quake and the wave. "It could be several hundred houses have been damaged ... but that is still not verified," said Yates. "There are two to three villages where the situation could be much worse." Islands lie on the 'Ring of Fire' Ten foreign tourists were staying on Tetepare Island, an uninhabited eco-tourism site, and the four Germans, four Britons and two New Zealanders were evacuated. Unconfirmed reports said two had been injured. Yates said there were no other reports of injuries. "We're lucky that whatever happened happened during the day and people were able to hike up the hills," he said Two helicopters and a police boat were carrying out damage assessments and a vessel carrying water, food and tarpaulins was dispatched from Honiara. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded seven earthquakes in the region since late Sunday. The largest, of magnitude 7.2, was centered 64 miles southeast of Gizo, and followed a magnitude 6.5 tremor less than two hours earlier centered 54 miles southeast of Gizo at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers). Gizo hotel operator Chelsea Kennedy told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that guests were evacuated to open areas after the temblors hit. The Solomon Islands lie on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34681041/ns/world_news-asiapacific/

Re: Recent large earthquakes
Tsunami leaves 1,000 homeless on Solomons Residents’ memories of earlier disasters help prevent casualties The Associated Press updated 12:34 p.m. CT, Tues., Jan. 5, 2010 HONIARA, Solomon Islands - Landslides and a tsunami destroyed the homes of about one-third of the population on a Solomon Island, but lives were likely spared as residents with memories of previous disasters fled quickly to higher ground, officials said Tuesday. From the air, extensive damage could be seen on a remote western island after a 7.2-magnitude temblor triggered the landslides in the Pacific Solomon Islands on Monday, said disaster management office director Loti Yates. No injuries have been reported some 30 hours after the biggest in a series of quakes churned a tsunami wave that was up to 10 feet high as it plowed into the coast, officials said. However, more than 1,000 people have been affected after some 200 houses were destroyed on Rendova, an island some 190 miles from the capital Honiara. Only 3,600 people live on Rendova. Yates said some 200 households were taking shelter in emergency centers on Rendova. Photographs taken from police helicopters Tuesday showed debris lining the foreshore and damaged houses on the coasts of Rendova and Tetepare, as well as deep scars on hills and cliffs caused by landslides. ‘Head for the hills’ Hillsides crashed down and the tsunami inundated homes Monday, but residents' memories of earlier disasters probably helped prevent any casualties, officials and residents said. In April 2007, an 8.1 temblor unleashed a tsunami that killed more than 50 people. A quake-churned tsunami that killed more than 200 on nearby Samoa and Tonga in September was another reminder, locals said. "People are very sensitive, as a quake conjures up memories and people immediately begin going to higher ground," police commissioner Peter Marshall told The Associated Press. "The fact it was daylight, the isolated nature of the wave and that the landslides were in a relatively sparsely populated area" also helped, he said. The largest quake — magnitude 7.2 — happened about 9:30 a.m. local time Monday and caused the tsunami to hit the coast a short time later. Since then, at least a dozen other quakes greater than magnitude 5.0 have rocked the earthquake-prone region. The strongest, a magnitude 6.9 aftershock, hit the nation's western region again late Tuesday night and generated a tsunami about an inch high, but there were no immediate reports of fresh damage and no reports of injury. In the provincial capital, Gizo, dive shop owner Danny Kennedy said the general rule is that "if there's anything more than 20 seconds of shaking or any sea water recedes, head for the hills." A police boat patrolled Tuesday to check the coastline, where many homes are at sea level, making them vulnerable to tsunamis, National Disaster Management Office spokesman Julian Makaa said. No casualties had been reported so far, he said. One village, Retavo, home to about 20 people, was reportedly completely inundated by a wall of sea water up to 10 feet high, but Makaa said no deaths or injuries had been reported there. Emergency food, water and tarpaulins were being shipped in. Re: Recent large earthquakes
I'm going to resurrect this thread. There is an increasing number of large earthquakes, as well of earthquakes which are quickly deleted or downsized by the USGS. Here is one that was downgraded twice! Re: Recent large earthquakes
China earthquake kills hundreds in Qinghai Some 400 people have died and thousands are feared injured after a magnitude-6.9 quake hit western China's Qinghai province, officials say. The powerful tremor struck remote Yushu county, 800km (500 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Xining, at 0749 (2349 GMT), at a shallow depth of 10km. Most of the buildings in the worst-hit town of Jiegu were wrecked, and landslides have cut off roads. Police said hundreds of survivors had already been pulled from the rubble. And at least one aid flight had been able to land at the local airport, according to officials. Senior Yushu official Huang Liming announced the latest death toll of 400, as the extent of the damage became clearer. State broadcaster CCTV reports that at least 10,000 people are injured. A local official in Jiegu told the BBC that almost all of the buildings in the town had been destroyed. "The death toll will definitely go up," he said. About 5,000 specialist quake rescuers have been dispatched from neighbouring provinces. Many people have fled to the surrounding mountains, amid fears that a nearby dam could burst. State media reported that officials were trying to drain a reservoir after a crack appeared in the dam. A spokesman for the local government, Zhuo Huaxia, told China's state news agency Xinhua: "The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic - injured people, with many bleeding in the head. "Many students are buried under the debris due to building collapse at a vocational school. "I can see injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack tents, we lack medical equipment, medicine and medical workers." In 2008, a huge quake struck in neighbouring Sichuan province, about 800km from Yushu, which left 87,000 people dead or missing and five million homeless. The dead included many schoolchildren, prompting a storm of controversy over alleged shoddy construction of school buildings. Quake-prone regionEarlier, Karsum Nyima, the local TV station's deputy head of news, told CCTV that houses had gone down "in a flash". con. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8619135.stm

Re: Recent large earthquakes
snippet from another articleQuote: The USGS recorded six temblors in less than three hours, all but one registering 5.0 or higher. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the largest quake's magnitude at 7.1. Qinghai averages more than five earthquakes a year of at least magnitude 5.0, Xinhua said. They normally do not cause much damage. perhaps of interest is that the area struck borders on Tibet

Afghanistan quake kills at least 7 By Muhib Habibi, CNN April 19, 2010 3:06 a.m. EDT (CNN) -- An earthquake in central Afghanistan killed at least seven people and injured 70 others early Monday morning, officials said. The quake, measured by the United States Geological Survey at 5.3 magnitude, struck about 1 a.m. (4:30 p.m. Sunday ET) and affected three districts in Samangan province, about halfway between the capital Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, said assistant governor Hajji Ghulam Sakhi Baghlani. "The villages were destroyed and the local routes were blocked from slipping mountain rocks on to the roads" Baghlani said. He said he feared the death toll may rise. "People may still be under the debris of the fallen houses," he said. A delegation was dispatched to the affected area to gather more information. http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/04/19/afghanistan.quake/index.html?hpt=T2

Re: Recent large earthquakes
Magnitude 6.4 quake hits southern Peru Thursday, May 6, 2010; 12:58 AM LIMA, Peru -- A magnitude-6.4 earthquake shook southern Peru near the Chilean border late Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were reports of toppled electricity poles in the Peruvian city of Tacna. The USGS said the quake's epicenter was 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Tacna at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles). It struck at 9:42 p.m. local time. The were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, said Edgard Lopez, a spokesman for Peru's Civil Defense. But radio station RPP said the quake toppled electricity poles in Tacna and the city was without power. The station said Peru's Geophysical Institute put the quake's magnitude at 6.5. On Aug. 15, 2007, a powerful earthquake killed 596 people and reduced the Peruvian town of Pisco to rubble. Tacna is near Peru's border with Chile, where a huge magnitude-8.8 quake hit Feb. 27, triggering a tsunami and killing 486 people. Since then the region has been shaken by dozens of smaller quakes. The latest quake was felt in northern Chile, but there were no reports of serious damage. Chile's National Early Warning Center said some telephone and electricity outages were reported in the port of Arica. Dozens of people reportedly fled coastal homes in fear of a tsunami, but the navy's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service said none was expected. That part of Chile is hundreds of miles north of the area hit by the February quake. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/05/AR2010050505691.html

Re: Recent large earthquakes
Earthquake felt across southern Mexico; 1 person dead June 30, 2010 | 9:30 am A strong earthquake shook southern Mexico early Wednesday morning, reportedly killing one person in Oaxaca and being felt as far away as Mexico City and the states of Veracruz, Puebla, and Guerrero. The quake struck at 2:22 a.m. with an epicenter in rural southwestern Oaxaca near the Pacific Ocean. It lasted half a minute and was strong enough to shake buildings in Mexico City, sending frightened people onto the street despite the hour. The only death reported as of Thursday morning was in Oaxaca near the epicenter, where a man was killed when a beam fell (link in Spanish). Mexican and U.S. seismological services initially measured the tremor at magnitude 6.5, but later the U.S. Geological Survey downgraded it to 6.2. It was the most significant quake in the country since the magnitude-7.2 earthquake that hit on Easter Sunday along the U.S.-Mexico border area near the city of Mexicali, killing 2 people. In Mexico City, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard reported the quake on Twitter shortly after it struck. Authorities sent ambulances to patrol streets and police helicopters to scan for damage. Electricity and water connections were affected in at least three boroughs. Some buildings, including a 10-story police tower, suffered visible exterior cracks, reports said. An hour later, the mayor tweeted that the quake caused no major damage and that the metro system was also unharmed: "Rest, if only for a little while." -- Daniel Hernandez in Mexico City http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laplaza/2010/06/earthquake-mexico-oaxaca.html

Re: Recent large earthquakes
Strong quake hits New Zealand Twitter posts talk of damage, aftershocks and power failures A strong earthquake hit near New Zealand’s second-largest city, Christchurch, early Saturday. Radio New Zealand described the quake as “severe,” and reported that power was out across the city. No casualties were immediately reported, but some residents posted Twitter alerts reporting damage and large aftershocks. The government said the earthquake was “a big one” and that it would decide soon whether to activate its National Crisis Center. Roads around the seaside suburbs of New Brighton and Sumner were already choked with cars as worried residents tried to flee the city. The biggest was felt just before 8am. * There are reports of minor injuries but no serious injuries or fatalities. * Some looting, police have sent out extra patrols. * Residents in hardest hit areas asked not to use their cell phones except for emergencies.
