Post UN warns of bird flu resurgence, new Asian strain
ROME (AP) — The United Nations warned Monday of a possible resurgence of the deadly bird flu virus, saying wild bird migrations had brought it back to previously virus-free countries and that a mutant strain was spreading in Asia. :censor

A mutant strain of H5N1, which can apparently sidestep defenses of existing vaccines, is spreading in China and Vietnam, Tthe U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said in a statement Monday. It urged greater surveillance to ensure that any outbreaks are contained.

Last week, the World Health Organization reported that a 6-year-old Cambodian girl had died Aug. 14 from bird flu, the eighth person to die from H5N1 avian influenza this year in Cambodia. :candle

Vietnam suspended its springtime poultry vaccination this year, FAO said. Most of the northern and central parts of the country where the virus is endemic have been invaded by the new strain. :rant :censor

Elsewhere, FAO says bird migrations over the past two years have brought H5N1 to countries that had been virus-free for several years, including Israel, the Palestinian territories, Bulgaria, Romania, Nepal and Mongolia.

"Wild birds may introduce the virus, but people's actions in poultry production and marketing spread it," said FAO's chief veterinary office Juan Lubroth in urging greater preparedness and surveillance.

Bird flu deaths in Asia prompt call for scrutiny

(Reuters) - Virologists warned on Tuesday that there was no vaccine against a mutant strain of H5N1 bird flu now spreading in China and Vietnam and called for closer monitoring of the disease in poultry and wild birds to stop it spreading to people.

The call came after the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned on Monday of a possible resurgence of bird flu and said a mutant strain of the H5N1 was spreading in Asia and beyond.

While scientists are uncertain if this new strain -- called H5N1-2.3.2.1 -- is more virulent in people, they said it was different enough from its predecessor to escape a human H5N1 vaccine that can tackle the parent strain.

They don't give up easily do they? The first strain was a bust; are they seeding a new strain or hyping a normal mutation? Not that we shouldn't keep an eye on it! TIme will tell. Watch for a new vaccine to be created to fight this new mutation.... It shouldn't take them too long to fake some tests.

Yes, I'm cynical, with good reason. And yes I do believe that at some point there will be a REAL pandemic with a truly novel and deadly virus, be it created by man or nature. Aren't they warning us about it with the new film out, "Contagion"?

I prepare for any and all disasters to the best of my ability and I keep a close eye on news of many different diseases, any one of which, or combination of, could sweep through the globe in no time. The decimation of the poor has been under way for decades. Just take a look at statistics for XDR TB and co-existing AIDS in Africa and other poor areas. There is a death every week in some villages. I have heard the horror stories from missioners returning to the States from various countries around the world. But it will take a super-bug that spreads VERY rapidly and has no known deterrent to eradicate much of the "First World", God help us.
