Two large earthquakes today:"

MAP 7.4 2012/03/20 18:02:49 16.662 -98.188 20.0 OAXACA, MEXICO
MAP 6.2 2012/03/20 17:56:19 -3.830 140.220 66.9 PAPUA, INDONESIA

NOTE: the two earthquakes were only a half hour apart.
The antipode of southern Mexico is the Indian Ocean, not too far from Indonesia. Just sayin'

The one in Mexico has been listed in various places as anything from a 7.4 to an 8.2. above is the USGS report.

7.4 quake rocks southern Mexico, shakes capital

An earthquake measuring 7.4 struck today in southern Mexico, about 110 miles from Acapulco, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

Update at 5:07 p.m. ET: The USGS says the quake was caused by "thrust-faulting on or near the plate boundary interface between the Cocos and North America plates" along the Pacific coast.

Update at 6:10 p.m. ET: The governor of Guerrero state is now saying that least 800 homes collapsed in Igualapa, CNN reports. Igualapa is a city of about 10,000 people in the coastal region south of Chilpancingo.

It measured in at 7.4 according to the US Geological Survey, which initially put it at 7.9, and the center was in Guerrero state. On Twitter, President Felipe Calderon said there appears to be no serious damage. "The health system is operating normally, except for some broken glass and other minor damage," he wrote in a Twitter post.

Re: Indonesian quake:
A powerful earthquake hit waters off western Indonesia early Wednesday, prompting officials to briefly issue a tsunami warning. Panicked residents poured into the streets, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.3-magnitude quake struck 260 miles (420 kilometers) off the coast of Aceh province just after midnight. It was centered 18 miles (30 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

Hmmm.... I am probably missing something, but here USGS says Indonesia had a 7.3, and in their listings I cited above it says it was a 6.2. Was there another quake somewhere?

Agreed Ruts! My first report on email read that the Mexico quake was an M7.9!

Why issue the report if it is wrong? Methinks they fiddle to get a general down play in the emotive response from folks. 20 Years ago a plus 7 quake was great news and everybody talked about it.

They are screwin with people's minds!

I think somebody might have mentioned this on the GT, but it's worth placing here. This is from Michael Janitz (Dutchsinse):

3/20/2012 — ALERT ! Mexico 7.9M earthquake PRE-PLANNED = verified simulation for march 20, 2012

Posted on March 21, 2012

This is profound and disturbing. There was a “drill” planned for March 20, 2012 in Mexico for a 7.9M earthquake “simulation”…. also on a separate note.. Barack Obamas daughter was at the epicenter on spring break: WTH is going on?!

Watch the video here:

Following is the poster that was put up all over the area in Mexico, announcing the earthquake:

Image

Important parts translated: Large simulation (drill, exercise): occurrence and effects of an earthquake 7.9 on the Richter scale. Participants: the general public, public and private schools and hospitals, businesses and public and private organizations,

The exercise will begin at noon. At schools and on the job: Before: be informed as to the evacuation route and the meeting point for your institution. During: At 12:00 stop your activities and follow your evacuation route to the meeting place where you must stay until 1:00pm. After: report your participation, the results and your observations to the following telephone numbers:
*************************

The actual date and time of the EQ: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 12:02:48 PM at epicenter

Lots more on military use of EQ's, the use of drills for false flags, and more here: http://sincedutch.wordpress.com/2012/03 ... h-20-2012/

Earthquakes shake Gulf of California
By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 7:31 AM EDT, Thu April 12, 2012

(CNN) -- A pair of strong earthquakes rocked Mexico's Gulf of California only minutes apart early Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quakes -- magnitude 6.9 and 6.2 -- were centered about 85 miles northeast of Guerrero Negro in the Mexican state of Baja California, or 325 miles south-southwest of Phoenix in the United States. Both epicenters were shallow, a little more than six miles underground.

Cardboard cathedral to replace church destroyed in New Zealand quake

By msnbc.com staff and news services

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- New Zealand's Anglican church will build a temporary cathedral made of cardboard in earthquake-devastated Christchurch as it works toward a permanent replacement for its 131-year old landmark destroyed last year.

The Victorian-era, Gothic-style cathedral, which dominated the city's central square, was badly damaged in the February 2011 quake, and is being demolished.

The replacement, an A-frame structure designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, will be built on the site of another historic church, which was also destroyed in the 6.3 magnitude quake.

"The Transitional Cathedral is a symbol of hope for the future of this city as well as being sustainable and affordable," spokesman Richard Gray said Monday.

Strong earthquake strikes Chile; no serious damage reported

(CNN) -- A strong earthquake struck coastal Chile near the port city of Valparaiso late Monday, causing mudslides and some minor damage, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The 6.7-magnitude quake knocked out some power and phone lines in the region, authorities said.

The temblor was felt in the capital city, Santiago, located 69 miles from the epicenter. A CNN en Español anchor held onto his desk as the quake rattled the studio during a newscast in Huechurba, a suburb of the capital.

The same part of the country was hit with an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in February 2010, killing hundreds of people.

180 killed, 1,300 injured as strong quakes jolt northwestern Iran
By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 4:27 PM EDT, Sat August 11, 2012

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- At least 180 people were killed and 1,300 others injured in two strong earthquakes that jolted northwestern Iran Saturday near the city of Tabriz, state-run news agencies said.

Iran's state-run Press TV said 180 people had died. Officials feared the casualties would rise.

The city of Ahar was home to 45 of the deaths and 500 of the injured, a local official told state-run IRNA media.

The first earthquake, a magnitude 6.4, hit at 4:53 p.m. local time 37 miles northeast of Tabriz, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Just 11 minutes later a second quake, measuring 6.3, struck 30 miles northeast of Tabriz.

Authorities reported 17 aftershocks in the region, state-run IRNA media said. The USGS reported seven aftershocks.

The quakes affected Tabriz, the capital of East Azarbaijan province, and nearby cities. It razed four villages and another 60 villages sustained heavy damage, Fars said.

Initial reports said some buildings in Tabriz suffered structural damage and power lines were down. Telephone lines were down in Ahar, the quake's epicenter. The extent of the damage was still being assessed.

Authorities dispatched rescue teams to the area.

I wonder where their nuclear plants are located... :hmm Yes, it is always the poor who suffer the most, but EQ's are pretty much an equal opportunity disaster - unless they are aimed/directed...

Indonesia earthquake leaves 6 dead, officials say
From Kathy Quiano, CNN

updated 6:05 AM EDT, Mon August 20, 2012

(CNN) -- Food and water were being dropped by helicopters on Monday to residents in rural Indonesia cut off after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck, triggering landslides, according to the National Disaster Management Agency.

At least 6 people were killed and 43 wounded when the earthquake struck Sunday near the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Agency said.

About 471 homes and buildings have been destroyed, Nugroho said. Many of those displaced are staying in shelters or government buildings that were undamaged by the quake.

Rescuers have been unable to reach several village because landslides triggered by the quake are blocking the roads. Heavy equipment and bulldozers are helping clear the way.

Disaster, health and social welfare officials, including the Red Cross, are headed to the area to provide emergency assistance, trucks and ambulances.

7.9 quake hits off Philippines

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 has struck off the coast of the Philippines, the U.S. Geological Survey said Friday. The quake was about 20 miles deep, the agency said.

The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Guam and other areas, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

This is breaking now. Other sources state the tsunami warning also includes Hawaii.

Powerful quake hits Costa Rica, two dead - 7.6 magnitude
Wed Sep 5, 2012 6:12pm EDT

(Reuters) - A powerful earthquake rocked Costa Rica on Wednesday, killing at least two people, sparking landslides, knocking down buildings, and briefly triggering a tsunami warning.

Striking a tourist region popular with Hollywood stars, Costa Rica's worst quake in over two decades sowed panic in the capital, disrupting power supplies and communications, and caused an entire hospital on the Pacific coast to be evacuated.

The Red Cross said two people died in Guanacaste, the northwestern province at the epicenter of the 7.6 magnitude quake, which split open tarmac roads, cracked gravestones and sent books tumbling off library shelves.

One of the dead was a man working on a construction site who was killed when part of a wall fell on top of him. The other was a woman who had a heart attack.

More here: http://drudgegae.iavian.net/r?hop=http: ... XK20120905

Costa Rican television said 22 people were also treated for injuries, but the Red Cross could not confirm this.

Locals were shocked by the force of the earthquake, which was felt as far away as Nicaragua and Panama, and the biggest to hit Costa Rica since a 7.6 magnitude quake in 1991 left 47 dead.

I know this isn't really a large earthquake (4.6 downgraded to a 4.0) but for New England it is notable, and was felt by people in my corner of CT (but not by us).

PORTLAND, Maine — An earthquake that hit southern Maine Tuesday night has rattled nearby New England states as far as Connecticut, including the Boston area.

The U.S. Geological Survey at first estimated 7:12 p.m. quake as a 4.6 magnitude, but later downgraded that to 4.0. The epicenter, about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, is about 3 miles deep. That location is about 20 miles west of Portland.

Strong earthquake shakes parts of Alaska, Canada
January 5, 2013 | Updated: January 5, 2013 7:35am

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A powerful earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of Alaskan and Canadian coastline, but the alert was canceled when no damaging waves were generated.

The magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami warning that followed caused concern in some coastal communities, with alarms sounding and people rushing to higher ground for safety.

But the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center later said the waves were too small to pose a threat, reaching just six inches above normal sea level in places such as Sitka and Port Alexander.

"Initially, in the first 15 to 20 minutes, there might have been a bit of panic," Sitka Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt told The Associated Press in a phone interview. But he said things calmed down as the town waited for the all clear.

The temblor struck at midnight Friday (1 a.m. PST Saturday) and was centered about 60 miles west of Craig, Alaska, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Seismologist Jana Pursley of the USGS said the quake was followed by six aftershocks, the strongest of which registered a 5.1 and came nearly four hours after the initial quake.
