Death in seconds: Radiation pockets found at Fukushima plant

TOKYO — Pockets of lethal levels of radiation have been detected at Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in a reminder of the risks faced by workers battling to contain the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) reported on Monday that radiation exceeding 10 sieverts (10,000 millisieverts) per hour was found at the bottom of a ventilation stack standing between two reactors.

Tepco said Tuesday it found another spot on the ventilation stack itself where radiation exceeded 10 sieverts per hour, a level that could lead to incapacitation or death after just several seconds of exposure.

The company used equipment to measure radiation from a distance and was unable to ascertain the exact level because the device's maximum reading is 10 sieverts. :censor

While Tepco said the readings would not hinder its goal of stabilizing the Fukushima reactors by January, experts warned that worker safety could be at risk if the operator prioritized hitting the deadline over radiation risks. :rant

Japan Held Nuclear Data, Leaving Evacuees in Peril

Image

FUKUSHIMA, Japan — The day after a giant tsunami set off the continuing disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, thousands of residents at the nearby town of Namie gathered to evacuate.

Given no guidance from Tokyo, town officials led the residents north, believing that winter winds would be blowing south and carrying away any radioactive emissions. For three nights, while hydrogen explosions at four of the reactors spewed radiation into the air, they stayed in a district called Tsushima where the children played outside and some parents used water from a mountain stream to prepare rice.

Fukushima Radioactive Tsunami Debris to Arrive in Hawaii Sooner than Expected

Hawaii is in the path of Japan's radioactive tsunami debris.

Researchers thought it would take years to reach the islands. But now, according to a University of Hawaii researchers, the debris will arrive sooner than expected.

....Since the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, researchers have been predicting it would take about two years for the debris from Japan to hit Hawaii's west-facing beaches.

“We have a rough estimate of 5 to 20 million tons of debris coming from Japan,” said UH computer programming researcher Jan Hafner.

...Their path back to Russia crossed exactly across the projected field of the debris. Soon after passing the Midway Islands on Sept. 22, they hit the edge of the tsunami debris. “They saw some pieces of furniture, some appliances, anything that can float, and they picked up a fishing boat,” said Hafner. It was a 20-foot fishing boat with the word "Fukushima" on it. “That's actually our first confirmed report of tsunami debris,” said Hafner...kitv.com

Confirmed: Fukushima disaster contaminated ocean with 50 million times normal radiation, leaks still ongoing

(NaturalNews) Things are suddenly heating up again with Fukushima. As we reported yesterday, the southern wall of Fukushima reactor #4 apparently collapsed over the past few days, calling into question the structural integrity of the remainder of the containment building.

snip

Photos of the failed structure have emerged on Enenews.com, where a report explains that a once-intact wall is now essentially "missing" and that further degradation of the structure could lead to mass evacuations in Japan.

snip

levels of radioactive cesium reached 50 million times normal levels in the ocean water off the coast of the Fukushima Dai-ichi facility. Even more concerning, the abstract of this paper concludes, "...the concentrations through the end of July remain higher than expected implying continued releases from the reactors or other contaminated sources, such as groundwater or coastal sediments."

Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/034395_Fukus ... z1gWItkmZx

edited to add: I haven't found a second confirming source for the story of a collapsing structure on plant #4, so for now this in unconfirmed.

Scientists test sick Alaska seals for radiation

Experts not sure if woes, from hair loss to bloody lesions, tied to Fukushima nuclear plant

By Bill Rigby
updated 12/27/2011 7:35:49 PM ET

SEATTLE — Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska's Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals' fur coats.

Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor.

It breaks my heart to read stories like this - when our beautiful animal kingdom has to suffer for man's green and outright inconsideration and stupidity! What did they do to deserve this??

We have the Rhino situation here in SA. Over 120 rhino's have been slaughtered here for horns in the past two months alone!!!

Just so some eastern dude can have an apparent permanent hard-on. It is only keratin for goodness sakes. But it is more valuable than gold presently and it will only stop when they are all gone...

I say the game keepers should put poison into the horns!

Found this interesting, to say the least... cause or effect, I wonder? Under the Fukushima nuclear plant:
Following are from Fukushima Diary:
http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/01/brea ... ma-plants/

21:41 1/5/2012 (JST) an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 hit Japan.
The epicenter is Fukushima Nakadori, where Fukushima plants are located.
It’s shallower than 10km. No information about the plant is announced yet.
JNN Fukushima live camera was down immediately after the quake.

NEXT:
2 more earthquake happened. Epicenters of both earthquake are right under Fukushima plants.

1) 22:03 1/5/2012 (JST) M2.6 7.1km deep under ground.

2) 22:13 1/5/2012 (JST) M4.1 20km deep under ground. (Scale 4 in Fukushima)

The data of (1) is missing from the webpage of Japan Meteorological Agency for some reason.

I just found a news source - energy news - which has some interesting news articles posted: I'll give the titles and the main link if you want to read the articles. Lots more going on there than is being reported around the world - but of course that goes without saying.

Fukushima & Japan

Report: Horribly mutated 'tomato' harvested north of Tokyo in June... Similar to 'Witch'…
Cesium levels rise sharply in Fukushima after New Year's quake -- Chiba too
Report: 3 quakes right underneath Fukushima nuke plant -- JNN live camera down immediate…
Japan Times: Alarming gov't report discussed 'Tokyo Exodus' and collapse of Spent Fuel P…

http://enenews.com/

Here is an excerpt from the "Tokyo Exodus" article:

Japan Times: Alarming gov’t report from March, 2011, discussed possible ‘Tokyo Exodus’ and collapse of Spent Fuel Pool 4 as rods melted through concrete walls in a worst-case scenario.

Nuke report's worst case: Tokyo exodus
Migration plans mulled at height of atomic crisis

summary of the article from energy news:
Compiled March 25
At the request of then Prime Minister Naoto Kan
Drawn up at the height of the crisis by the chief of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission
Alarming 20-page report was written up by commission Chairman Shunsuke Kondo
Kondo drafted the report after Kan asked him for a “worst-case situation”
Kondo emphasized that the scenario was based on extreme conditions and was not very realistic
The report uses the same evacuation protocols adopted during the 1986 Chernobyl accident
Areas 250 km away — including central Tokyo — could have been tainted by radiation and require the gov’t to assist those electing to voluntarily migrate away
Scenario is based on the assumption that another hydrogen explosion would have further damaged reactor 1, releasing more radioactive fallout into the environment and forcing the entire plant to evacuate
With no workers to control the situation, the cooling systems at reactors 1, 2 and 3 would be lost and the spent-fuel pool in reactor 4 would collapse as the rods melted through its concrete walls, the report said

Some updates from "Fukushima Diary":

Quote:
From the article of Tokyo newspaper(1/8/2012 JST), it turned ou that the decreasing water level problem at reactor 4 was not stopped, it has been on-going at least until 1/7/2012.
It is assumed that the water in the cooling system is flowing into the container vessel instead.
Because nothing has been done to this trouble caused by the earthquake of 1/1/2012, the water will keep flowing into the container vessel. M4~5 level of the earthquake has started to happen frequently around Fukushima plants. We still need to keep our eyes on the reactors.

Quote:
Following up this article about the decreasing of water level at reactor 4… (above)

The blogger woman in Minamisoma leaked information from an actual Fukushima worker.
According to her post, after the earthquake of 1/1/2012, the pipe of spent fuel pool for reactor 4 was broken, the pool completely lost its water.

The worker stated, Sooner or later, the truth will have to to be widely known. Believe it or not, you will only regret. Wear a mask at least.

The pool was boiling without water.

Japanese boat washed away in tsunami spotted more than a year later
By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 2:00 AM EDT, Sat March 24, 2012

(CNN) -- A fishing trawler swept away more than a year ago by a tsunami off the east coast of Japan has been spotted floating near British Columbia, Canadian officials said Friday.

"It looks fairly sound and has rust streak from being out there for a year," said Marc Proulx, the maritime coordinator of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria, British Columbia.

The trawler is part of a giant debris field that was generated by the giant wall of water that struck the east coast of the island nation following a 9.0 earthquake, sweeping everything from cars to houses into the ocean.

The fishing vessel is about 120 miles off the Queen Charlotte Islands, commonly referred to as the Haida Gwaii. The islands are an archipelago on the north coast of the British Columbia.

It was first spotted by a Canadian military air patrol, and it has since been determined that it has been adrift without anybody at the helm since March 11, 2011, Proulx said.

Title: Lethal radiation detected inside Fukushima reactor
Source: NHK
Date: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 11:13 +0900 (JST)

Tokyo Electric Power Company has detected extremely high levels of radiation inside one of the crippled reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. [...]

SOURCE: Asahi

It says radiation levels increased as the dosimeter was lowered inside the reactor. This suggests the nuclear fuel melted down and collected at the bottom of the vessel.

The utility also learned the water level inside the vessel was only 60 centimeters, compared to the original estimate of about 3 meters.

TEPCO suspects the suppression chamber at the bottom of the vessel may have been destroyed. [...]

http://enenews.com/just-in-suppression- ... -nhk-video

*Yomiuri* Experts: Melted fuel may not be covered in water — Far shallower than assumed — Tepco still claiming Fukushima Daiichi in state of ‘cold shutdown’

The water level in the containment vessel of the No. 2 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is only about 60 centimeters deep, far shallower than previously assumed [...]

According to some experts, it is possible that nuclear fuel that melted through the reactor’s pressure vessel and accumulated on the bottom of the containment vessel in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami may not be completely covered in the water.

[...] The discovery of the unexpectedly shallow water level will not affect TEPCO’s judgment that the reactor is in a state of “cold shutdown.”

Bit of an update on the drifting trawler.

U.S. Coast Guard to sink Japanese boat washed away by tsunami
By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 5:32 AM EDT, Thu April 5, 2012

(CNN) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed a ship to sink a fishing trawler that was swept away more than a year ago by the tsunami off the coast of Japan and is now adrift near Alaska.

The crew of the Coast Guard's 110-foot CG Cutter Anacapa plans to assess the deserted trawler's condition Thursday morning, said Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow.

If its assessments are satisfactory, the crew will attempt to sink the vessel, named the Ryou-Un Maru, with the 25-millimeter cannon on board the cutter, Wadlow said.

The rust-stained trawler is part of a giant debris field in the Pacific Ocean that was generated by the devastating wall of water that struck northeastern Japan following a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The enormous wave dragged everything from cars to houses out into the ocean, killing thousands of people.

The drifting trawler is considered a hazard to navigation for vessels in the area, according to authorities. Mariners have received information about the unmanned and unlit boat's presence.

Early Thursday morning, the trawler was about 170 nautical miles southwest of Sitka, Alaska, the Coast Guard said. A Coast Guard plane has dropped a self-locating data marker buoy in order to track the boat.

U.S. Coast Guard sinks Japanese boat washed away by tsunami

By Chelsea J. Carter, CNN

updated 6:43 AM EDT, Fri April 6, 2012

(CNN) -- The shelling and sinking of a rust-stained fishing trawler in Alaskan waters ends its aimless voyage more than a year after a tsunami swept it off the east coast of Japan.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it opened fire on the roughly 200-foot trawler Thursday after it determined the "unmanned, unlit, unmarked vessel" posed a hazard to mariners and Alaska's marine environment.

The Ryou-Un Maru caught fire and capsized in more than 6,000 feet of water about 180 miles southwest of the port city of Sitka, said Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley, a Coast Guard spokesman.

It was a dramatic end for the Japanese squid trawler. It was bound for a scrap yard before becoming part of a giant debris field generated by a tsunami that struck the island nation following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011.

"It's really one of the first significant pieces of tsunami debris to make its way across the Pacific Ocean," Mosley said.

The ship drifted undetected until late last month when a Canadian coastal air patrol spotted it several hundred miles off the Queen Charlotte Islands, an archipelago on the north coast of British Columbia.

It captured the imagination of the public, which followed the final days of "the ghost ship" in media reports and tracked its progress on Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard websites.

"I think it captured a lot of people because it survived. It was swept away by the tsunami. It's believed lost. It's forgotten about. And it spends an entire year at sea, a summer, a winter and it makes it all the way across the Pacific Ocean," Mosley said.

Post Re: Anotrher 9.0 Earthquake in Japan
Fukushima Daiichi Site: Cesium-137 is 85 times greater than at Chernobyl Accident

Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, was invited to speak at the Public Hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012, on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but will also affect the common spent fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air. This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced. He stressed that the responsibility of Japan to the rest of the world is immeasurable. Such a catastrophe would affect us all for centuries. Ambassador Murata informed us that the total numbers of the spent fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site excluding the rods in the pressure vessel is 11,421

I asked top spent-fuel pools expert Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy, for an explanation of the potential impact of the 11,421 rods.

I received an astounding response from Mr. Alvarez [updated 4/5/12]:

Quote:
In recent times, more information about the spent fuel situation at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site has become known. It is my understanding that of the 1,532 spent fuel assemblies in reactor No. 304 assemblies are fresh and unirradiated. This then leaves 1,231 irradiated spent fuel rods in pool No. 4, which contain roughly 37 million curies (~1.4E+18 Becquerel) of long-lived radioactivity. The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.

The infrastructure to safely remove this material was destroyed as it was at the other three reactors. Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks.. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged Fukushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming re-construction effort and will be charting in unknown waters. Despite the enormous destruction cased at the Da–Ichi site, dry casks holding a smaller amount of spent fuel appear to be unscathed.

snip

It is important for the public to understand that reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet.

Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival.

Last night on the MSN a story broke that one of the containment ponds has a leak, and the power company admitted that a large portion of the containment pool liquid has leaked into the ocean!

This is a disaster that will never go away, and will cause many more frightful consequences.

And governments still insist it is safe to operate nukes!??!

South Africa is about to allow the building of two nukes on our coastline in a pristine nature reserve right next to a beautiful town development at St.Francisbay.

Who are the decision makers?? Politicians!!!

Post Re: Another 9.0 Earthquake in Japan
First, a quote from Clif High's postthat Simon recently posted on the GT:

Quote:
the disaster at Fukushima is manifesting the language of the 'israeli mistake' sub set of our data (israeli ties to this are extensive, from stuxnet onward...). This could well turn out to be a disaster that will yet kill most of the life north of the equator and a good deal of that below. The data set that produced the forecast language for the 'israeli mistake' has had fulfillment from language emerging from this on-going, potentially lethal-to-all-humans-and-other-animal-life, nuclear disaster.

If our data set that forecast the 'israeli mistake' and subsequent 'ill winds' is to be taken as accurate, then the good news is that probably only a billion or so will die as a direct result of the on-going disaster at Fukushima. However, we are frequently wrong in our forecasts (as are all, honest, prognosticators). So, what if Fukushima actually is an extinction level event? We have had data sets indicating that scenario as well. And there are currently LOTS of supporting evidence for nasty nuclear effects all over Japan, and from credible sources.

I was curious about "stuxnet", so I got this from wikipedia

Quote:
Different variants of Stuxnet targeted five Iranian organizations,[9] with the probable target widely suspected to be uranium enrichment infrastructure in Iran;[10][11][8] Symantec noted in August 2010 that 60% of the infected computers worldwide were in Iran.[12] Siemens stated on 29 November that the worm has not caused any damage to its customers,[13] but the Iran nuclear program, which uses embargoed Siemens equipment procured secretly, has been damaged by Stuxnet.[14][15] Russian computer security firm Kaspersky Lab concluded that the sophisticated attack could only have been conducted "with nation-state support".[16] This was further backed up by the Finnish computer security company F-Secure's chief researcher Mikko Hyppönen who commented in a Stuxnet FAQ, "That's what it would look like, yes".[17] It has been speculated that Israel[18] and the United States may have been involved.[19][2

A few headlines/notes on the current status of the plants, and the status of knowledge of what is occurring there.

April 6th:
Fukushima radiation headed across Pacific Ocean: Now 186 miles off Japanese coast, study reveals extent of release, direction of pollutants

April 18th
Japanese government criticized for downplaying nuclear disaster Reports from Japanese journalists confirm what anti-nuclear activists fear: the situation in Fukushima is much worse than the government is letting on - and the Japanese people are being misled. .... According to Uesugi, radiation measurements are manipulated......In Japan, the debris left behind in the tsunami adds another dimension to the problem.

"There is a lot of debris. They are trying to spread it out and burn it in some prefectures. That is creating further problems because the radioactivity gets out and spreads."

March 24th
Helen Caldicott: Fukushima/Nuclear Medical Impact

She (Helen Caldicott) compared it to Chernobyl 25 years ago and said it is at least three times worse....She uses a figure of one million premature deaths as a result of Chernobyl.

Not only is Fukushima worse, but also the Fukushima disaster is far from over, she warned. There is still "uranium lava" inside the plant that can explode forth at any time......Radioactive isotopes can remain for hundreds of years and some for many thousands of years. Speaking as a physician, she explained the result is genetic damage, mutations and cancers. And the radiation concentrates up the food chain. Wild animals at the top of the food chain after Chernobyl had to be buried in nuclear waste dumps.

In the cases of Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, officials delayed warnings and outright lied about the situation at every stage. .....

During the question and answer period, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing spoke of her survival in a high radiation zone. Caldicott explained that medically radiation effects are "idiosyncratic" and that many died from much lower radiation exposures.

There is, of course, much more on the topic, some articles are already posted above. I will continue to post new revelations and developments as I find them.

Post Re: Anotrher 9.0 Earthquake in Japan
Fukushima is falling apart: are you ready?
By Christina Consolo

Contributing writer for End the Lie and host of Nuked Radio

Thirteen months have passed since the Fukushima reactors exploded, and a U.S. Senator finally got off his ass and went to Japan to see what is going on over there.

What he saw was horrific.

And now he is saying that we are in big trouble.

See the letter he sent to U.S. Ambassador to Japan Ichiro Fujisaki, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and NRC’s Chairman Gregory Jaczko here.

But what is so ironic about this is that we have been in this heap of trouble since March of 2011. March 17th, to be exact, when the plume of radioactive materials began bombarding the west coast of California.

And Oregon. And Washington. And British Columbia. And later Maine, Europe, and everywhere in between
.

Independent researchers, nuke experts, and scientists, from oceanography to entomology and everywhere in between, having been trying to sound the alarm ever since.

The scientists most upset are those who have studied the effects of radiation on health. I’ll say it again, so its really clear: we are in big trouble.

The most preliminary reports of soil contamination are starting to come in from the USGS, who has seemed reluctant to share this information. Los Angeles, California, Portland, Oregon, and Boulder, Colorado, so far have the highest radioactive particle contamination out of the entire US.

That being said, every single city tested across the country showed contamination from Fukushima. What is even more alarming, however, about the numbers coming in, is that they are from samples taken April 5th, of last year.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, has only recently confirmed that there were three meltdowns, and they have been ongoing, unabated, for thirteen months, and no effort has been made to contain them.

Technology has to be developed/invented to deal with the melted out corium under the reactors. Until then, they will keep doing what they have been doing.

TEPCO just keeps dumping water on them, after which they let it pour into the ocean, and steam up through the ground, every second of every day. The jet stream, and a highly dynamic portion of our atmosphere called the troposphere, have been swirling around massive amounts of radioactive particles and settling them out, mostly in rain, over the entire northern hemisphere, especially the west coast of North America, from Alaska down to Baja and even further.

Iodine, cesium, strontium, plutonium, uranium, and a host of other fission products have been coming directly from Japan to the west coast for thirteen months.

snip

Problem is, that’s not even the biggest problem. The biggest problem is what Senator Wyden is all bent out of shape about, even though independent researchers and nuke experts have been warning about this for a year.

And that is that the Reactor #4 building is on the verge of collapsing. Seismicity standards rate the building at a zero, meaning even a small earthquake could send it into a heap of rubble. And sitting at the top of the building, in a pool that is cracked, leaking, and precarious even without an earthquake, are 1565 fuel rods (give or take a few), some of them “fresh fuel” that was ready to go into the reactor on the morning of March 11th when the earthquake and tsunami hit.

If they are MOX fuel, containing 6% plutonium, one fuel rod has the potential to kill 2.89 billion people. If this pool collapses, as Senator Wyden is now saying too, we would face a mass extinction event from the release of radiation in those rods.

That is, if we aren’t in one already. Nuke experts like Arnie Gundersen and Helen Caldicott are prepared to evacuate their families to the southern hemisphere if that happens. It is that serious.

So now you know, if you didn’t before. We are in big trouble.

Get informed. Start paying attention to this. Every single statement in this article is verifiable, and I will continue to verify and validate the seriousness of this situation at every opportunity I have.

This may be the most important thing you ever pay attention to, for the sake of your family, friends, your neighbors, every one you know and meet, all of humanity.

It’s been thirteen months, you have some catching up to do.

Preparing for tsunami debris, wherever it may make landfall
By Phil Gast, CNN

updated 9:48 AM EDT, Thu April 26, 2012

CNN) -- First came the stuff that floats on the surface and is pushed by wind: Buoys, a soccer ball, flotation devices. And, most notably, a rust-stained unmanned fishing trawler in Alaskan waters.

Communities in Alaska, Hawaii, the West Coast and Canada are preparing for the main event from debris pushed offshore by last year's massive Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

About 70% of the debris sank, according to Japanese government estimates.

No one knows how much of the remaining 1.5 million tons of debris is still floating in the Pacific Ocean.

But U.S. and state officials say that some items washing ashore may be from the disaster, which took place 13 months ago and nearly 5,000 miles away. Thousands of people were killed.

"Our models show the outer edge of the debris is at the West Coast and Alaska now," Nancy Wallace, program director and division chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Marine Debris Program, said Wednesday. The bulk of the debris is north of Hawaii, slowly moving east.

The soccer ball that recently washed up on a remote Alaskan beach apparently belonged to a teenager from a Japanese city devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.

Misaki Murakami, a 16-year-old high school student, said he has "no doubt" that the ball is his after hearing that his name was among the characters written on it, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported.

A map of radiation level samples in the US, is found here: http://radiationnetwork.com. The map updates every minute; levels have changed just since I posted it.

The highest level at this date and time is right in my neck of the woods - western CT/MA! The map is too small to be more accurate.
